[Bug 43892] Disable ArticleFeedback <=v4 on Wikimedia wikis

2013-07-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43892

Hi Ori, I owe you an apology.

I mistakenly thought this was a new incident, when in fact this is the earlier
discussion we had months ago.

And you are correct that we dropped the ball in terms of contacting other
wikis, though we did start this process -- but did not have the resources to
carry it out.

Our initial hope was to get Article Feedback v5 ready first, so that we could
release it at about the same time as we discontinued old versions of the tool.
But due to a variety of factors, that plan didn't pan out.

I am not sure yet what our next steps will be about this feature, and we need
to resume our initial outreach to all these wikis, to see what they want to do.
But that is unlikely to happen for several weeks, until we're caught up with
higher priority projects like Notifications and the Visual Editor.

In any case, I am very sorry for my inaccurate statements above -- and I really
appreciate what you did to solve the bug above. Thank you!

[Bug 50920] New: Bundle a pre-configured PuTTY

Bug ID: 50920
 Summary: Bundle a pre-configured PuTTY
 Product: Tools
 Version: unspecified
 Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: MediaWiki-Vagrant
 Assignee: o...@wikimedia.org
 Reporter: o...@wikimedia.org
CC: o...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
 Mobile Platform: ---

PuTTY is available as a single, standalone .exe file, 472 KB in size.
Jakub Kotrla's set of patches (available at http://jakub.kotrla.net/putty/)
make PuTTY read session configurations from disk rather than the Windows
Registry.

Because of this, and because the purpose of the machine is to provide a
lightweight, disposable development environment, the VM itself can be
configured quite insecurely.

Vagrant installations use a common, generic private/public key pair for SSH
access. (Remember that the Vagrant VM is networked via a private, virtual
ethernet interface that links it exclusively to the host, which is why this is
OK.) Because that's the case, the integrity of PuTTY isn't much of a concern.
We just have to make it clear that the bundled PuTTY is insecure by design and
inappropriate for any uses other than Vagrant. If we were really worried about
this we could build our own crippled executable.

[Bug 50624] ULS "IME selector" gone from input boxes

Siebrand changed:

The default state for input methods on English language Wikipedia production is
disabled. That means that the "small typewriter icon" will not appear for first
time visits. It needs to be enabled before the small typewriter icon appears
for input fields. For the text "International Phonetic Alphabet" to appear next
to the small typewriter icon, a user needs to enable the input method, either
by selecting "International Phonetic Alphabet" in the small typewriter icon
dropdown menu, or by using the shortcut key control+m.

From what I can see, the English language beta labs environment also has the
input methods disabled by default. This possibly changed as ULS was deployed to
English language Wikipedia last Tuesday. Is English language Wikipedia labs
indeed taking most of its configuration from production?

I've checked German language Wikipedia in beta labs, and there input methods
are enabled by default as expected.

Hypothesis: It looks like an assumption in the automatic tests running on
English Wikipedia beta labs has changed, and tests should be updated
accordingly.

However a large (200 mb range, don't remember the exact size) file split into

Just for reference, wikimedia's 500 errors usually contain debugging

When on-wiki JavaScript fails JSMin's (JSParser to be exact) validation, it
makes the minified script file just throw an error. This error thrown includes
the page name (e.g. User:Example/common.js).

This output is cached, which means if someone copies the JavaScript (e.g. to
debug the problem), it will show the wrong filename/page name for that
subsequent user.

This usually won't be too hard for a user to figure out (particularly if
there's only one copy). However, the page name could be added to the cache key
to fix this. I don't think this will have too much of a performance impact.
There generally shouldn't be many identical copies of a script (there are
certainly scripts widely imported, though).

"Preformatted" is HTML jargon which most of VisualEditor's target users will
not understand, and it actually produces an effect (text with less formatting)
which is unexpected if you don't know what it means beforehand. It should
either be given a plain-language name so that people will expect the behavior,
or removed.

I actually don't understand why this style effect is in the header-level
pull-down when it is not a header-level. My preference is to remove it, since
it is uncommon and mostly adding noise, but it should be renamed if kept.

There needs to be better documentation at [[Extension:WikiEditor/Toolbar
customization]] explaining how to actually customize the toolbar. The current
information is poorly presented and incomplete. What's the point of having a
fancy user-customizable editor, if the documentation to use it is too poor for
users to actually customize?

In particular, it would be good to have an example that brings up a jquery
dialog box.

A user on English Wikipedia suggests that the alphabetical ordering is going to
be problematic with templates where parameters have a reason to be ordered
differently. For instance, with reference citations, the parameters for first
and last [names] will be separated by other parameters.

Taken from English Wikipedia

***

Template:Convert is actually a good example of where TemplateData falls
over and hits the ground. The meaning of the numbered parameters changes
depending on how many of them there are and whether the entry is text or a
number. For example, each of the following are valid:
3.21 kg
3.21 kilograms (7.1 lb)
3.21 mi
3.21 miles (5.166 km)
60 to
60 to 170 kilograms (130 to 370 lb)

60 ± 10 kilograms (130 ± 22 lb)
6 ft
6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m)
In those examples, parameter 3 is variously 1) The output unit, 2) The number
of significant figures, 3) The upper limit of a range, 4) The measurement
uncertainty, 5) The number of inches in foot-inches measurement. Now write a
TemplateData description for parameter 3 (or 2 or 4 or 5)? Convert is used on
500,000+ pages, so it is not like it can simply be redesigned at this point.
That said, if someone can see the values of each parameter in the transclusion
window then it would still be pretty easy to figure out which one they need to
edit. I would suggest that the transclusion editor needs a way to preview the
parameter contents (even if just a snippet) without having to click on each
parameter. Dragons flight (talk) 17:57, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

[Bug 50915] New: context specific editor for templates?

Bug ID: 50915
Summary: context specific editor for templates?

On English Wikipedia, it is stated that some common templates need a context
specific editor.

Examples offered by (and with explanatory text by) User:Clem Rutter

*Template:convert
(Template:frac
Those are simple- all we need is to display the parameters so they can be
changed, when focus is lost they just display. For useability you could enter
the the inline-template-editor by double clicking or ctrl-shift -click.

*Template:fact
*Template:cn
These two are more complex as editors are there to change the *cn to a
reference- of which the *sfn template is ideal. So here on a double-click, you
need to change a *cn to a *sfn and enter the inline-template-editor to add the
fields which are Name|Year|pp=page-lastpage. For a sfn, on leaving, you need an
alert that offers to take you to the reflist to confirm or edit if that
reference is missing.

*Template:sfn
Explained above.

*Template:efn
Simplicity- there is only one parameter. Though an alert may be needed if the
Notes {*{notelist|notes=}*} structure is not in place.

*Template:reflist-
fiendishly complex from a programming pov but functionally simple- as the
functionality we need is
add a line in wiki code- I C&P common ones from a master list of commonly used
texts in field that I keep in a subpage, or as a textfile on the desktop. An
easy technique to teach when you are training at a museum or library as you can
give your students the file on usbstick
change some data- for instance an isbn number
this can be achieved in a popup wikicode editor- or even gedit, vi, geaney,
wordpad as no parsing is required.

(Template:infobox
it is totally essential to just be able to change the content of a field
visually. It is desirable to add new fields but this is of lower priority nigh
essential, and this wont be achieved until the issue of recursive templates is
resolved. (That rates as essential on my list.)

I leave the list there for a Linus test, so if you could pass this on to your
dev team and ask them to add these to the functional specification. Here is an
example of a sample edit for them to try Swanley it keeps coming up on my
watchlist:

*first three references contain raw urls- probably could do with a *cite
template her- not mentioned above
*fix a *cn
*change item in infobox
*convert acres to hectares needed

All of that could be easily achievable.-- Clem Rutter (talk) 18:20, 5 July 2013

[Bug 50911] New: Support transitive properties in SPARQL queries

Bug ID: 50911
Summary: Support transitive properties in SPARQL queries
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: unspecified
 Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: WikidataRepo
 Assignee: wikidata-b...@lists.wikimedia.org
 Reporter: emw.w...@gmail.com

 Mobile Platform: ---

Transitive properties have wide use in Wikidata. Examples include basic
membership properties like instance of (P31), subclass of (P279) and part of
(P361); and genealogical properties like mother and father. The P31 and P279
properties are based on W3C recommendations for representing information in the
Semantic Web -- rdf:type and rdfs:subClassOf.

The ability to draw conclusions from transitive properties is possible with
RDFS query inference engines that implement SPARQL. A list of SPARQL
implementations is available at http://www.w3.org/wiki/SparqlImplementations.
Handling the simple entailments implied by P31 and P279 seems to be a core
feature of querying in the Semantic Web.

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Technical_proposal#Optional_extensions_to_phase_3
mentions the first optional goal as "Develop and prepare a SPARQL endpoint to
the data". While support for transitive properties presumably (and
understandably) would not be part of Wikidata's initial support for SPARQL, a
bit down the line it would be very helpful to have support for general
transitive properties in Wikidata SPARQL queries, or at least the more limited
and core feature of handling inferred claims for the rdf:type and
rdfs:subClassOf (P31 and P279) properties.

Magnus Manske has also inquired about support for this kind of feature in
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikidata/Development/Queries. An earlier
version of this feature request is available at
http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Contact_the_development_team/Archive/2013/04#Transitive_properties_and_SPARQL.

There are important details that would need to be worked out with conflicting
sources and qualifiers, but I'm filing this here so there's a place to track
this feature request at a high level.

[Bug 50910] New: Issue with specific (highly used) template in the Hebrew wiki

Reproduce:

1. Go to this page:
https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%A9%D7%9C%D7%9E%D7%94_%D7%A4%D7%99%D7%9C%D7%91%D7%A8
(Image is floating on the left)

2. Edit the page. The image is now stretched all across the content area,
pushing the text down.

This is a 'no picture existing' template. In the Hebrew wiki:
https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%AA%D7%91%D7%A0%D7%99%D7%AA:%D7%90%D7%99%D7%9F_%D7%AA%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%A0%D7%94

It is probably an issue of the template code, but since it's used very often,
it would be great if someone can help find the problem in this so we can fix
the template itself.

Replication steps:

1. go here:
https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%A8%D7%97%D7%95%D7%91_%D7%99%D7%A8%D7%95%D7%A9%D7%9C%D7%99%D7%9D?veaction=edit

2. Click the box on the left (a 'street' template in the hebrew wiki)

3. The "Transclusion" icon appears on the right edge instead of the left.

Happens in Chrome and Firefox 22.0 under Windows.

I suspect this is again a problem with the flipped position settings. I will
take a look in the code.

The save dialog uses a gray color on a very small text. This isn't good for
contrast, and gives it rather 'light' color which might communicate a
'disabled' state to some users, which you don't want with a license text.

Just as with Special:UserLogin, I think we should switch to a slightly darker
gray on small text.

In some respects the save dialog is partially modal, which is a strange and
unfamiliar concept to some.

The content is not editable, and partly blurred. Yet I can click links inside
the content. The buttons in the toolbar have a functioning look, but don't
actually work. Also, when clicking outside this dialog, I would expect it to
dismiss, but it doesn't.

it matches on the different case: Hands-On Universe and then stops comparing.

They are not really *that* visible, they're displayed just like edit
summaries, but without the italics. (Of course wiki admins can make
them show up all uppercase, bold and on neon-yellow background.)

[Bug 50366] Templates that create part (but not all) of a table cell don't work

Similar hack, but now on the table itself, instead of a table cell. See the
Infobox of WikiProject Aircraft:

[Bug 49806] VisualEditor: Hidden templates should display as an icon in-page so they can be interacted with (e.g. a puzzle piece?)

2013-07-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49806

How about this: If the cursor is before or straight after a template, pop the
'puzzle' indicator into view.

You could make it float above the current line, with a droplet (as a sort of
cursor) downward pointing at the position where there is a template that is
invisible or floating. When you click the icon, move the cursor to be on
'template', blue highlighting the template content if it is not hidden (this
will help direct the users eye from cursor position to content) and directly
open the template editor.

Even with non-hidden, but floating templates it can be confusing. To quote a
user:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Peach_Springs_Trading_Post&oldid=563257259

I place the cursor to the left of the line that begins "The Peach Springs
Trad", just after the malformed comment, then press backspace, in the hopes
of starting to delete said malformed content, the entire infobox disappears.
This is quite startling.

Perhaps a warning is required for the short term ? "Are you sure you want to
delete template... ?"

ref1 is defined inside the infobox template. The second use of this named
reference is inside a textblock, but when you hover the [1] you get a stopsign
cursor and cannot use this usage of the ref to open the editor.

This happens with the Link annotation, but also happened to me with my Language
annotation prototype when I play with it.

Steps to view the problem:
1. Go to some link in the text, put the cursor on it.
2. The 'link' button pops up, recognizing the annotation, and if you click it,
the full annotation fragment is selected (expected behavior) and the input
widget appears.
3. Without closing the input widget, click on another link in the text. The
widget moves to the new location with the proper data, but the text of that
fragment isn't selected, and it's a bit odd to edit.

I think a better behavior may be to close the widget and have the icon pop up
on the new location, as if I clicked an unrelated non-link text and then again
selected a link.

(I hope this makes sense, I can post some screenshots if needed)

I use Firefox 22.0 under Ubuntu.

[Bug 50894] New: Throttle does not seem to be working

Bug ID: 50894
Summary: Throttle does not seem to be working
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: master
 Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: major
 Priority: Unprioritized

A simple filter:
length(added_links) > 0
works fine.

But if I try to add throttling, it stops working at all. I tried with the
options:
Number of actions to allow: 2
Period of time: 3600 seconds
Group throttle by: user
Action: Block the user and/or IP from editing.

Then I tried adding links several times to a single one and different articles
by the same (registered) user, but the user has not been blocked. Also tried
different actions, like Tag the edit for further review, and Trigger these
actions after giving the user a warning. Nothing works, the warning is not been
shown too. And the hit count on the filter stays at 0.
