Oh, awesome! :-)

> I may be able to just transfer them to dumps occasionally via cron.

Or even just a simple explanation (basically duplicating comment 1 of this bug)
somewhere on dumps.wikimedia.org would be sufficient.

There's daily dumps:

https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/dumps/

The directory doesn't currently allow listing, but the file format is:

labswiki-.xml.gz
labswiki--images.tar.gz

Where year is , month is xx, and day is xx.

I may be able to just transfer them to dumps occasionally via cron.

I looked at for "labs" or
"wikitech", but didn't find anything. The wiki at wikitech.wikimedia.org should
have occasional dumps/backups.

I believe as wikitech is outside of the cluster, this wouldn't fall under
dumps.wikimedia.org, per se, but it should be simple enough to use the same
scripts and host the dumps somewhere.

Maybe do a dump every six months or something?

When a commit is pushed to Gerrit with a bug number reference, Gerrit
Notification Bot will first add a comment on that bug linking to the gerrit
change. Then it will come back and set the status to PATCH_TO_REVIEW in a
separate operation.

This leads to a superfluous second bugmail message whenever a commit is pushed.

Instead, the bot should be doing these two things in the one go.

Andre tells me that Christian thinks this could be hard to fix.

Chris McKenna said that a text link and an icon link were "a nightmare from a
usability perspective".

You are saying "it's about consistency". Something can be completely usable and
not be consistent. Why is consistency important to you? I do not see the need.

According to your logic, we should delete the watchlist star icon because it is
inconsistent with the text links at the top of pages. I believe the watchlist
star icon was partially implemented as a way to save space at the top of pages,
and to avoid having dropdown menus in smaller screens.

The star icon allowed the viewing of Wikipedia pages at smaller screen widths
before the dropdown menus showed up at the top.

With edit links we are trying to avoid dropdowns, hover, and hidden edit links.

An icon avoids clutter on section header lines. We still need "edit" as text at
least once, since that is what makes Wikipedia what it is; the encyclopedia
that anybody can *edit*.

[Bug 49806] VisualEditor: Hidden templates should display as an icon in-page so they can be interacted with (e.g. a puzzle piece?)

2013-07-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49806

--- Comment #14 from John Mark Vandenberg ---
Regarding the English language variable templates specifically, it would be
great if these were handled by pushing it into a meta tag (bug 52166) and
incorporate it into page settings.

Regarding top icons, there is a core enhancement for a pre-defined area for
these icons (bug 23796), and a VE enhancement request to do the same (bug
51420).

Regarding others, a puzzle piece sounds like a great UI for it. Or a custom
icon defined in TemplateData?

The page content block, and the textarea for editing, should support having a
language variant set for the page.

e.g
a tag in the page, like {{LANGUAGE:en-GB}}
should set lang="en-GB" on the content div, and on the textarea wpTextbox1.

Browser spellcheckers will then use the correct spelling definitions for that
page.

On En.Wp there is already templates which could implement this, and this would
support the many policies of retaining existing spelling.

bug 31015? It would be useful to start that set of variants, with just the
basic transforms; the implementation of a viable set of conversions could then
develop over time.

[Bug 52165] New: Show clear links to Talk/Article pages on mobile, make History link clearer & up top

Bug ID: 52165
Summary: Show clear links to Talk/Article pages on mobile, make
History link clearer & up top
   Product: Wikimedia
   Version: wmf-deployment
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: General/Unknown
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: sje...@yahoo.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

The mobile interface for wikipedia currently doesn't offer a link to the
Talk/non-Talk page. Nor does it offer a clear link to the History page.

Request: add a thin set of tabs at the top of the page, as on the non-mobile
interface. Include at least "Article/Project" "Talk".

Either offer a "History" tab (which would take you to the non-mobile interface,
as currently), or move up the "last edited X days ago" line to be a subtitle,
just below the title. If the latter, add the text "(see page history)" to
make it clear that clicking on that text will display the history page.

This will make editing and interacting with the site via mobile much more
rewarding. Thanks!

It's not clear where to file bugs on the mobile editing interface. The mobile
Wikipedia App has a product, but just as much work is going into the mobile
editing experience; and I can't tell where to file or where to search for bugs
and feature requests for the latter. :)

I'm on Android, running the default browser.

When I am browsing via the desktop interface, if I log in, I get redirected to
the mobile interface, in which I'm still not logged in. It shows me an error:
"No active login" for this account.

Reloading in the desktop interface shows me logged in. Reloading in the mobile
interface does not.

It seems to me I should be able to log in once and remain logged in across both
interfaces; and that it shouldn't switch between the to on redirect after
login.

It's not about "being difficult" it's about consistency!

We have two equivalent ways of editing an article, therefore there should be
two equivalent buttons.

Either both of them should be textual links or both of them should be icons.

None of them should be hidden by default.

MSIE 8.0: 0.21%
MSIE 7.0: 0.05%

MSIE 4.01: 0.02%

Is it possible for our analytics team to determine roughly what percentage of
MSIE <=8 readers that have JavaScript disabled? The Visual Editor team decided
to not support MSIE 8 at all, so they may already have some stats.

And/Or MediaWiki strip HTML5 elements for clients that only support HTML4?
e.g. figure/figcation -> img. Or is that a caching problem?

Or could MediaWiki add support those HTML5 elements which degrade in IE <=8
without JS in a way that doesnt render the page unreadable?

I don't understand. How is it difficult to click a static icon that is there
all the time (without having to go through any hovering)? There is a star icon
at the top of almost every Wikipedia page for adding or removing a page from
one's watchlist.

If clicking an icon to get to the source wikitext editor is a nightmare, then
how is making both links icons (as you suggest) better. I agree that the icon
for the source wikitext editor should have alt text and tooltip. I should have
stated that to begin with, but I assumed that would be done, just as it is for
the watchlist star at the top of the page.

If VisualEditor is default, why after clicking on a red link there's
'action=edit' in url and the source editor runs instead of 'veaction' and VE?
I've checked it out on the enwiki and plwiki, but it concerns the rest of phase
2 as well and creating a new page in general. Furthermore, it makes inputboxes
('type=create') incompatible with VE and it can be a bothering problem on some
wikis.

[Bug 52161] Zuul: Certain events cause Zuul to trigger a pipeline with 0 jobs

The events in question were supposed to trigger gate-and-submit on e.g.
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/76318/ which didn't happen (it left the
comment that it started, but no build report was ever posted and no merge was
performed).

I executed '/etc/init.d/zuul reload' (live reload, no restart, no lost events),
and that caused the ghost entries to go away.

However that doesn't solve the problem, those changes didn't get a build report
and no merge.

When a reference is edited, the updated version will not appear in the
reference list when attempting to insert an existing reference. Instead, the
reference that will appear in the reference list will be the reference as it
was when the page editing started.

To reproduce, go to a page with references. Edit one of the references, and
don't save. Then, do as if you wanted to insert an existing reference and look
at the list of existing references. The edit to the reference you have edited
will not appear.

[Bug 49969] VisualEditor: Dialogs should be repositionable/draggable

John Broughton changed:

   What|Removed |Added

 CC||johnbrough...@comcast.net

How hard is it to make the dialog box moveable? Really? There is what, one
parameter that needs to be changed? If this were a really hard problem, it
would be understandable that the VE team was deferring this for more important
things. But it's not that hard (I hope; if so, that bodes poorly for VE), and
it impacts LOTS of editors. Yes, it affects the dialog box for page settings,
when doing categories. But there is the identical problem when adding a caption
for an image (Media settings dialog; might want to know how something in the
article is spelled) and possibly for the other dialog boxes (for example, in
the Media dialog, searching for an image where the search term has an unusual
spelling).

Even better would be the ability to copy/paste from the main editing window to
a field in the dialog box. I realize that has potential ramifications for loss
of focus - it would be undesirable for the dialog box to disappear *behind* the
main editing window. Still, in Mac OS X, the "Force Quit Applications" dialog
box is moveable, and the user is able to copy text from other windows, but the
dialog box remains on top of every window until it is closed. (Excessive,
actually: the ideal is to have the VE dialog box float on top of the main
editing window, ONLY.)

But we (as in, Wikipedia editors) would settle for a really minimal solution,
initially - just make the dialog boxes moveable. Please?

When an existing reference is inserted, it is put at the start of the paragraph
the cursor is currently in, regardless of where it is in that paragraph. This
has happened to me while I was attempting to use in a paragraph a reference
that was already used in that paragraph: the reference got inserted at the
start of the paragraph and I was not able to move it. I tried again some times
but it still did not work and I had to use the wikitext editor.

If you change the contents of the last row in the table at
https://test2.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Private_Practice&oldid=56640

from "n-Perfluoro-Pentan C5F12"to e.g. "n-Perfluoropentan C5F12",
escaping is added seemingly unnecessarily. My guess is that it's overeagerly
trying to prevent a new table row (|-) from being started.

Currently the request doesn't make sense for Wikipedia, because with Wikidata
the second interlanguage link is ignored, see bug 43671. This bug was meant
mainly for non-Wikipedia or even non-Wikimedia wikis but I'm not sure of the
use case validity here...

Just to explain the current message caching architecture a bit. Like mentioned,
fallbacks are cached as if they were in the original language. There is quite
literally no way to find out the actual language of a cached message (until my
patch is merged). Note that this is only the CDB cache I'm talking about.
Messages can also be overridden in the DB.

With that said, we obviously cannot construct user-specific CDB caches, because
that'd be insane. The only way to implement this would be to manually query
each language in the user's fallback sequence until it gets a hit. I'm not sure
exactly how feasible such a situation would be. Fetching interface messages is
slow enough as it is...

Luckily I don't think we'll need suexec anymore. There's already be
On-Behalf-Of permissions added for Verified/CR, I don't see any reason we
couldn't extend that for Submit. I'd sleep much better at night knowing Jenkins
didn't have full suexec :)

Indeed, changing title tag on a single wiki depending on the interface language
seems semantically incorrect and just too confusing.

[Bug 50756] VisualEditor: removing spaces not registering as a change - or /working/

2013-07-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50756

This is, for what it's worth, a surprisingly common operation in cleaning up
articles creating articles for new users at Articles for Creation and the like.
Nobody gets [[:w:WP:PAIC]] right the first time, and extra spacing is one of
the two most common errors relative to that policy.

By 'filter out' I mean that they are not shown. Only jenkins-bot merges are
shown, since as Krinkle mentioned they're asynchronous.

Yes, IMHO: the actual merge is notified to the reviewers by email, that's more
than enough as a check. However, what time does this "currently" refer to? This
was 20 min after it:

Since annotations allow editing, they should also track history. This will
require schema changes in the extension, and investigation of how core handles
this.

Once the history is tracked, there should be a way to display it.

[Bug 46452] gerrit-wm should suppress "jenkins-bot merge" instead of "CR+2 review"

2013-07-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46452

Since the merge is asynchronous and potentially delayed, I personally find more
value in knowing when it is merged than knowing when the CR+2 was given.

Also, some repositories don't have automated merge yet. So hiding the MERGED
for non-jenkins is bad I think. If anything, I especially want to know when
someone manually merged something by passing jenkins.

Or, if it is a repo without an automated gate-and-submit, those will be the
only MERGED messages there are (e.g. various ops repos and non-wmf-deployed mw
extension repos).

For consistency I'd show both jenkins and non-jenkins merges.

For the long term we should see if we can make Zuul use suexec and/or faux the
log message in gerrit-wm to show the username of the person who last CR+2'ed
(defaulting to the real merger, jenkins-bot, if there was none of whatever
reason).

So I currently filter out all 'MERGED' messages that are *not* from
Jenkins-bot, since they are going to be preceded immediately by a C+2. I can
instead not show any MERGED messages at all, and only report any merge
failures. Is that good?

If one bothers, they can disable the extendedwatchlist option...

To me it's always been very useful. Forcing me to uncollapse everything to have
crucial information such as who made some edits and the name kind o defeats the
purpose of enhanced RC. If there are many names, it's even more useful to have
them in a compact form rather than having to skim many lines.
