It appears that the wbsetclaim api module is not marking edits as bot edits.
wbcreateclaim and others work fine.

I totally agree. Sometimes a first translation is so "heretic" in the first
place that you want to prevent others from changing it by providing
explanation.

In Greek portal we have a glossary with talk pages for every word and we
strongly insist in adding edit summaries with links to talk pages where a good
explanation should be, whenever needed. Keep in mind that in Greece we
constantly fight over language matters for centuries!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_language_question

Despite that, edit summary is in the core philosophy of every wiki and it
should available everywhere, even in the smallest, tiniest, silliest editable
thing.

yeah, the only way round that I can think of at the moment would be to have
some sort of toggle between the current behaviour (default) and a display all
mode. That would be useful for identifying at a glance where things are on a
page, particularly with locating any invisible templates. It's not something I
personally see as being of huge value, but I'm not everybody.

[Bug 48034] Option to disable 'Treat signature as wikitext (without an automatic link)'

2013-08-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48034

I'm not sure why you would expect a non-'teenager-like' comment from a
teenager. I certainly wouldn't see wrong in an adult making such a comment, and
I seriously advise against making ageist comments on Bugzilla in the future.

I have read the entire description (don't bother making assumptions on what I
have not read) multiple times, the idea remains pointless. You want the ability
to disable for other users what is simply a convenience feature, which doesn't
add the ability to do anything which the user can't otherwise do (albeit in a
very slightly less convenient way), and therefore I would not consider this
request being fulfilled as a technical limitation. You even pointed to a bug
where your argument was debunked, and yet offer no real counter other than
'seems like a good idea'.

There most certainly is an option for re-opening, it just probably isn't open
for you. Wanting to use it on bugs like this is likely not the best way to go
about getting that ability.
As for contesting, you are of course welcome to ask another developer, but I do
not expect any to agree with you.

Note that you can disable HSTS at any point by sending the header with an
expiry that already expired (similar to how it's done with cookies). This is
what Extension:SecureSessions does to implement HSTS in MediaWiki, and as long
as Squid/Varnish allows MediaWiki to override the HSTS header it sends somehow,
it should still be possible even with an HTML cache.

This is because VE seems to have stripped data-mw from a category
element.

In this particular instance, because of fostering of a category link from the
infobox table, the happens to be the very first element in the
transclusion HTML from the infobox and gets the entire roundripping information
of the infobox. However, if I understand correctly, these metadata tags are
handled differently in VE which might be contributing to the lost of data-mw on
these tags (and subsequently Parsoid never sees the infobox when it comes to
serialization).

So, this can happen on any page where the infobox generates a table and the
specific HTML output emits a category link outside a table-tag. The specific
place where category links are placed relative to table tags does not matter
for the PHP parser since category link wikitext effectively disappear from the
HTML from the place where they appeared (and hence there is nothing left to
foster out of the table). But, in the case of Parsoid, because of
roundtripping requirements, the links generate an actual HTML element which
(depending on where they occur in the HTML flow) can get fostered out and can
(depending on how they interact with the surrounding context) can get
roundtripping data-mw information.

So, if VE can preserve this information for now, that will fix this problem.

If there is a problem dealing with link tags and preserving data-mw for
whatever reason, we should figure out a strategy of dealing with these tags.
Note that it does not matter what HTML category links translate to -- as long
as a HTML element is generated, they are subject to fostering out of tables.

I will not outline other possible solutions for now -- we can discuss on IRC if
we there is anything needed on the Parsoid end to support these scenarios.

[Bug 51750] {{#titleparts::|1}} returns empty string and possibly other wrong return values

2013-08-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51750

I found another issue of #titleparts which is actually a little more realistic
as the colon examples above.

It seems #titleparts fails as soon as URL encoded characters are included in
the URL, see bug 52492.

[Bug 52492] New: {{#titleparts}} fails on URLs with URL encoded characters

2013-08-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52492

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 52492
Summary: {{#titleparts}} fails on URLs with URL encoded
characters
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: ParserFunctions
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: eduard.bra...@gmx.de
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Consider the URL
> //en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Test&action=edit§ion=new&preloadtitle={{urlencode|Enter
>  heading!}}|1}}

which expands to
> //en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Test&action=edit§ion=new&preloadtitle=Enter+heading%21

Titleparts will fail on this (perfectly fine) URL when calling
> {{#titleparts://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Test&action=edit§ion=new&preloadtitle=Enter+heading%21|1}}

Actually it should return an empty string (as the URL is protocol relative) and
that's actually what #titleparts does as soon as one removes the "%21" from the
URL.

I think a cancel button makes perfect sense from a UX point of view for
dialogs.

Closing would be an alias of cancel, but that's not the primary flow for a
user.

Closing windows is always a bit of awkward and uncertain action to take.

[Bug 52479] jQueryMsg behavior for missing templates does not match PHP parser

2013-08-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52479

Matthew Flaschen changed:

   What|Removed |Added

   Priority|Unprioritized |Low
Summary|mw.msg should not return an |jQueryMsg behavior for
   |error message if the|missing templates does not
   |message contains|match PHP parser
   |'{{SomeTemplate}}' |

Templates are not currently supported in jQueryMsg, just magic words (the code
uses the word 'template' to mean magic words).

mw.msg is equivalent to mw.message(...).text()

meaning the 'text' format/operation is being used.

In the PHP parser's text mode, if a template exists, it is expanded into its
wikitext. If it does not exist, it results in [[:Template:SomeTemplate]].

With the way jQueryMsg currently works, even checking if the template existed
would require either:

1. Sending extra data down from ResourceLoader
2. Doing an API call from jQueryMsg

Thus, for now I recommend you use:

mw.message( 'some-key' ).plain()

if you want the output 'SomeText {{SomeTemplate}}.' for this kind of thing.

The 'plain' format does not try to expand {{ }} blocks, just $1, $2
replacement.

* A "rubbish bin" icon (on lightweight inspectors, but not dialogs) is Option

* An "X" icon (on dialogs, but not inspectors) is Option 2.
* The "apply changes" button (on dialogs, but not inspectors) is Option 3.

Clearly this isn't "obvious" enough; we should consider what more we can do.

[Bug 50956] VisualEditor: Reduce padding in editnotice popup because some existing edit notices already have some margin

Hi James,

I don't know what mean you by normal edit notices :) A simple 100% div, with
background color but without padding would look weird inside the flyout.
We are rethinking the editnotices design/content and right now they look
somewhat awkward within this asymmetrical padding. If someone ever need a
margin it can be done within the editnotices itself, but this mandatory padding
limits the design a lot.

Templates and images aren't necessarily very big (think for example about the
20px-wide images that decorate some lists, either directly or as tables).

When a node is smaller than a threshold, it displays the node icon as a pop-out
(like an inspector menu); if we showed them all the time it could massively
crowd-out the text of the page.

Also, I worry that it would obstruct part of the template so you wouldn't know
whilst editing exactly what was going to appear for users (if the menu icon was
unhelpfully placed).

Bugzilla is the official mechanism for dealing with breakages.

While it's easy to say that the goal would be to keep the category membership
near zero, it sounds like (from reading comment 0) that this category would
quickly include tens of thousands of pages.

A hidden blacklist category could be included in a page or template to achieve

This would be nice for desktop users, but not so good for mobile (tablet/phone)
users who are using touch to navigate. Maybe something else for them, like
displaying the details of the file on a page before inserting?

If one opens the VE editing interface, the user experience in relation to image
formats varies significantly. The report:

http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Technik/Text/Edit/VisualEditor/Beta2013-07&oldid=121153156#Bilder_werden_im_VE_kleiner_angezeigt

has several examples with different browsers like

FF 22 / Win 7: edgewise images smaller; rest bigger.
Chrome 28 / Win 7: all significantly smaller.

See also screenshots in perma link.

[Bug 52461] VisualEditor: Media settings dialog should show a preview of the media item

2013-08-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52461

I don't think the original commenter had particularly thought of that, as the
only thing you can currently do is write a caption. The idea being that you can
refer back to the image when writing it. This will be even more useful I guess
when you can used this dialog to write alt text.

My gut feeling is that a live preview would be nice but not essential. Possibly
implement a static preview and then see if anybody asks for it to be made into
a live preview. Assuming a live view is more than trivially harder to implement
than a static one.

--- Comment #4 from Dan Wolff <326...@gmail.com> ---
I believe I found the root cause - demonstrated by a minimal test case:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Skalman/bullet_point_test

Wikitext of template:
* {{{1}}}

Wikitext of page:
* {{template|Hello there}}

Expected output (the way the traditional parser handles it):
* Hello there

Note that a naive wikitext template expander would produce:
* * Hello there

To me, this now seems to be a problem with the data model.

FWIW, even Special:ExpandTemplates seems to be affected by this bug!

For comparison, in the wikitext editor open any page and click Heading/Level2.
The editor creates a new example heading at the top of the page.

VE has a number of confusing cases:

In each case, open the page, edit in VE, and click Heading:

* If the page starts with non-editable line like an image link, clicking
Heading does nothing at all and the Save page button does not become enabled

* If the page starts with a single line of text, VE turns that text into a
heading

* If the page starts with lines containing single line breaks, VE wraps the
whole string in "==" thus garbling the contents of the page. For example if a
page begins with

A line
another line

VE turns that into

==A line
another line==

and then forces the user to go through the "Wiki markup detected" dance. Note
that if the user actually does select "A line/another line" then the behavior
of VE is subtly different, which is also confusing.

Suggest that clicking Heading without any text selected should create an
example heading as the old wikitext editor does.

Thanks for the super-quick fix.

As for the wait until deployment, would it be possible to add something like
"(hold CTRL while clicking this link to open it in a new window)" before this

If not it's not worth doing anything, but if we can as an interim measure help
some people that's better than nothing.

[Bug 48306] Chunked uploads allow arbitrary data to be dropped on the server

2013-08-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48306

--- Comment #42 from Gerrit Notification Bot ---
Change 64860 abandoned by MarkAHershberger:
Disable chunked uploads by default.

Reason:
MZ makes some good points and this has sat for a while. Abandoning since I'm
not willing to spend time arguing in favor of this.
