Add a reference URL. I've arisen the importance because it affect all the pages
without an interwiki link, and it's not possibile to add it.

[Bug 52874] New: #related magic word doesn't work

2013-08-14 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52874

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 52874
   Summary: #related magic word doesn't work
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Parser
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: andyro...@hotmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

The magic word in the subject, is used with this sintax {{#related:Italia}} in
order to create in the sidebar a title (Pagine correlate) and a link (Italia
... in this example) that will lead to the Portale:Italia page.

After the migration to wikidata this magic word go in conflict with the "In
altre lingue" title (the one dedicated to wd).

The description of the conflict is the following.
* When a page doesn't have any interwiki link in wikidata, the title "In altre
lingue" doesn't show at all, make it impossible to add an interwiki link.
* When a page HAVE at least an interwiki link, the tittle "In altre lingue" is
shown correctly, but the "gear" with the language settings is shown near
"Pagine correlate" instead of "In altre lingue".

I've tested that the same issue occur both in it:voy and de:voy.

To let you visualize better the issue, you can check:
1)
http://it.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=Compiano&curid=29244&diff=297962&oldid=297939
... this page doesn't use #related
2) http://it.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=Compiano&oldid=297964 ... this
page use #related through Template:Quickfooter

[Bug 52647] MediaWiki images not being indexed properly by external search engines

2013-08-14 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52647

--- Comment #3 from ErkDemon  ---
Hi Jesús!
This isn’t a conventional SEO "optimisation" problem, where one has to "do
one's part" to help a search engine to find pages – in this case Google already
knows all about the links that point to the description pages, it simply
refuses point-blank to follow those links and index the contents, presumably on
the basis that the apparent file type suffix doesn’t match the content, which
is a classic mechanism for delivering malware.

Another interpretation is that since obfuscated links can be used for security
purposes, perhaps Google shouldn’t be trying to index files that people are
trying to conceal.

Anyhow, whatever the reason - it seems that no matter how many times you tell
Google that your MW description pages exist using sitemaps, links, etc, it
won’t look at them.

And unfortunately, since the MW designers decided to hide all of a wiki’s
high-res images behind the description pages (instead of allowing thumbnail
code blocks to link to both the description page AND the source image, by
default, your source files won’t show up on Google either.

You can override this behaviour for manually-placed images using the LINK=
workaround (which means training all your wiki’s contributors to add an extra
editing stage every time that they add a link), but that fix isn’t available
for category thumbnails.
---

Yes, bypassing MediaWiki and creating your own external sitemap or file-list
page will tell Google that your high-resolution files exist, but when those
images then turn up on an image search, and the user clicks on Google's button
to visit the page where the image is used, then there either won’t be a page to
go to (if you used the sitemap method, because no crawled page actually links
to the image) , or there’ll be a link from Google to your "image list" page,
rather than to the pages where the image is actually used. The image has no
context unless there’s actually a link on the page where the thumbnails appear,
and the easiest way to do this is to add the direct link to the thumbnail code.

When we write a script to generate the "image list" page with all the direct
image links, we could include links to the info pages that can help human
visitors that land on the page via Google, but again, Google itself won’t
follow the link. We can also include an auto-generated link to the picture’s,
info-page’s "What links here" page to provide the missing context to those
humans, but once again, Google won’t read that link to create the network
information, this time because the "what links here" page has its robots flags
helpfully set to NOFOLLOW NOINDEX.

I suppose that one could try to recreate the "crosslink" info by writing your
own custom spider, but then you’re practically writing your own image content
management system in parallel to MediaWiki, just to get external search to work
properly.

WIKIPEDIA:
So how does Wikipedia manage it?
It doesn’t. Wikipedia’s standard info pages are ignored by Google too. Looking
at the WP page for "Fish", and image searching for the "Giant Grouper" fish
file, Google will report copies of the full-size image (and the info page
preview) on multiple external sites, but it won’t give you a link to any of the
ones that are lodged on Wikipedia (other than their thumbnails). If we then
Google a chunk of text from the standard info page, Google doesn’t seem to have
that page in its indexes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Georgia_Aquarium_-_Giant_Grouper_edit.jpg
isn’t on Google. What _is_ showing up on Google (for some reason) is the text
content for what I’m guessing is the mobile version of the page, at
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Georgia_Aquarium_-_Giant_Grouper_edit.jpg

What Wikipedia _have_ done that seems to be successful in increasing their
ranking for embedded images is to use the "srcset" attribute to embed direct
links to larger versions of the image ( $wgResponsiveImages ), which Google can
presumably read and follow. Those are intended to be higher-res versions of the
thumbnails for use with retina displays, etc, but it’s a way to at least create
a logical link between an image’s use and a version that’s twice as large as
the default embedded thumbnail. It’s just a bit of a shame if your thumbnailing
engine strips out all the original image’s metadata. And apparently the feature
doesn’t yet work for category images.

So, currently, mediawiki’s image handling, as far as search engine visibility
is concerned, seems to be badly broken. Assuming that getting search engines to
read the dedicated info page is a lost cause, we can still easily fix the main
problem by giving site admins the option of globally overriding thumbnail
behaviour so that there’s some sort of direct link from the thumbnail image
block to the full file. It doesn’t have to be an obtrusive link, and it doesn’t
have to be the main link that’s used when the thumbnail is clicked, but the

[Bug 52650] Enhanced navigation: Support for dynamic, category-based "Prev"/"Next" links

2013-08-14 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52650

--- Comment #1 from ErkDemon  ---
... Oh, and BTW, a "prev/next" function linked to a category would also be a
useful way of generating URLs that could be registered with a browser for each
wiki page for navigation, to be activated by "< >" buttons or a left or right
swipe for tablet users (or voice control, gesture control, etc).

If nothing is specified, swiping could move the user through the main article
list if they're on an article page, or though the main category list if they're
on a category page.

The ability to swipe forward and backward to navigate though Wikipedia would be
fun! :)

on db1002, the last five revision ids are, in order:
38674247  38674177  38674166  38674128  38674117

on db1009, the last five revision ids are:
38674247  38674166  38674128  38674117  38674097

and that is because:
mysql:wikiadmin@db1009 [nlwiki]> select * from revision where rev_id =
38674177;
Empty set (0.01 sec)

whereas on all other slaves (that show up in the noc dbtree listing) the record
is present.

Not sure how to investigate the cause of the corruption though.

[Bug 52520] VisualEditor: Create a design guideline to minimize clicks and key presses

rupert.thur...@gmail.com changed:

--- Comment #4 from rupert.thur...@gmail.com ---
james, let me reopen this one please. there is a big difference between "it is
our intention" (whoever "our" is) and a crystal clear guideline having as
primary target:
* minimize clicks and key presses
* response time <3 sec
this would make it so much easier for new developers as well. and so much
easier for testers to point out that something is against the goal.

as i tried to point out above with examples, people were and still are allowed
to increase key presses and mouse-clicks considerable compared to the existing
solution. i tried to look for design documents or mail references on some tech
list to find a justification for this, but could not find one.

you as a software developer surely know that nothing is more expensive than
fixing a design bug. and nothing is more expensive than finding a bug late.
just to take an arbitrary url to support this:
http://blog.bootstraptoday.com/2011/12/25/early-detection-of-bugs-can-save-up-to-22-billion-yearly/

so, please do not play the "a good thing but not the right place" card. which
then ends up nowhere. you can close the ticket if you either create this
guideline, or successfully have a (public verifyable) decision in whatever
place you consider right for a decision like this.

[Bug 52872] New: eventlogging role requires python server module, port forwarding, and special flags

2013-08-14 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52872

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 52872
   Summary: eventlogging role requires python server module, port
forwarding, and special flags
   Product: Tools
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: MediaWiki-Vagrant
  Assignee: o...@wikimedia.org
  Reporter: sp...@wikimedia.org
CC: o...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

I added the eventlogging role some time ago, but couldn't run
server/bin/eventlogging-devserver

I followed /vagrant/mediawiki/extensions/EventLogging/server/README.rst with a
couple of modifications.
a)$ sudo apt-get install -y python-coverage python-mysqldb python-nose \
python-pip python-sqlalchemy python-zmq python-pymongo
needs a backslash line continuation character at end of first line

b) `setup.py install` didn't work, python setup.py install failed "error: can't
create or remove files in install directory" because it's trying to install to
/usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/.  Ori suggested `sudo python setup.py
install`, that worked.

Now I can run `eventlogging-devserver --port 8100`. These fixes could go in
README.rst.

The next problem is my host machine can't connect to port 8100 on the VM, I
added the following to Vagrantfile:
# To enable client-side event logging in the 'eventlogging' role,
# uncomment these two lines:
config.vm.network :forwarded_port,
   guest: 8100, host: 8100, id: 'eventlogging'

The next issue is to get eventlogging-devserver to listen to requests from the
host machine on the virtual ethernet adapter as well as to local requests
within the VM, you need to run `eventlogging-devserver --port 8100 --host
0.0.0.0`.

Some portion of these steps could be automated as part of the eventlogging
puppet role, and/or there could be vagrant-specific documentation of them
somewhere.

FWIW the naive developer expectation might be that enabling eventlogging role
would log both client and server events to vagrant/logs/eventlogging.log.

jmCor: still Windows 7, Firefox 22.0. The component change did not fix the bug

[Bug 47694] "Remember me" on Login interface should state "for 30 days" only

2013-08-14 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47694

--- Comment #23 from Steven Walling  ---
(In reply to comment #22)
> This request for a handful more characters on login seems quite
> straightforward; 4 months later, can we proceed or are fingers still heated?

It's still a bad idea.

1). The "30 days" is likely change to be much longer, or indefinite, if you
check the box. It's one of the pieces of privacy policy feedback that keeps
coming in, and with a revision to the policy going to be published for
community input soon, there's not much point in specifying something that may
not need to be specified soon.

2). Knowing how long doesn't actually help you make a decision. Either you do
or do not want to be remembered. If you do, the amount of time doesn't matter.
If you don't (such as for being on a shared system), it doesn't matter if it's
30 days or 2.

This is another case where details don't help you make a choice, but we're
being pushed to carry over legacy content despite the fact that most people
agreed that the legacy message ("remember me for 180 days") was bizarre and
unnecessary.

It seems particularly unwise to argue with the person who's been actively
working on this bug and to whom the bug is currently assigned as to whether the
bug is fixed or not.

This bug probably needs a few more dependencies (to cover, for example, the
page move issue mentioned in comment 15). wizardist: if you could file any
dependent bugs, that would be great.

> Deployment schedule can be found at
> https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.22/Roadmap

Please do not link to irrelevant pages. There's nothing on that page that has
anything to do with this bug. This feature is being implemented in an
extension, not in MediaWiki core, and this extension has not yet been installed
on Wikimedia wikis. The MediaWiki 1.22 roadmap, interesting as it is, currently
has no bearing here.

Nice to see that there's a script for this (or a start to one). :-)

It's in the wrong place, though. The most natural place to find such a script
would be in the maintenance directory of MediaWiki core (this is where I looked
after Matt posted his question in comment 6). Other wikis will want to clean
out their skin preferences as well, presumably. There's nothing
Wikimedia-specific about this, as far as I can tell, so the
WikimediaMaintenance extension is simply the wrong place for this script.

[Bug 52871] New: VE post-edit notification text needs revising

2013-08-14 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Bug ID: 52871
   Summary: VE post-edit notification text needs revising
   Product: VisualEditor

OS: All
Status: NEW

 Component: General
  Assignee: jforres...@wikimedia.org
  Reporter: swall...@wikimedia.org

Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Created attachment 13101
  --> https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=13101&action=edit
Screenshot at 1024x768

Very happy to see that VE is now using the same post-edit styling as wikitext!
This is a big win for usability, since it is fixed position and so on.

I did find one suboptimal fact though... Since the text of the message includes
the page title, it is very variable width, depending on the page title length
and the browser width.

One of the UX goals for this notification is to have new users notice it, but
for it to eventually fade out of your attention as you become used to it. Since
the page title produces very different widths as you edit different pages, this
calls a lot more attention to the notification even if you've edit thousands of
times.

My recommendation would be to match what's in the wikitext version, "Your edit
was saved." since we A/B tested it and we know it meets the goals I mentioned
above. Another good solution is simply removing the page title, so that the VE
version says, "Your changes have been saved." That seems functionally the same,
though I think using edit is good for consistency with the tab names etc.

Confirmed (Timestamps are different by 2 hours for me (17:44). Presumably you
have timezone set in your preference).

After refreshing multiple times, I was able to reproduce this history thing.
(Where edit by Glatisant [revision 38674247] shows a diff size the same as its
total size) The bad history page I got was served by mw1063 (Although seems
more likely for something to be messed up on the db side then on the apache
side).

Other weird things:
https://nl.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=revisions&titles=Wikipedia:Aanmelding_moderatoren&rvlimit=5&rvprop=ids|flags|timestamp|user|userid|size|sha1|contentmodel|comment|parsedcomment|tags&rvstart=20130810174421&rvlimit=3&format=xml&rvdir=older
Sometimes it shows 38674177 by Dqfn13, other times it skips that revision.

My theory would be that one of the database slaves has corruption related to
that revision.

Blindly putting the references section at the end of the article seems to not
be great (it'd be after the "external links" and "see also" sections, and after
any stub or thematic templates).

There's the DELETE part too.. Both should be easily updated to use batched
queries

Our delete wrapper in it's current form doesn't take options...

Ideally

do {
$res = $dbw->delete(
'user_properties',
array(
'up_property' => 'skin',
'up_value NOT IN (' . $dbw->makeList( $dontChange ) .
')'
),
__METHOD__,
array( 'LIMIT' => 50 )
);
wfWaitForSlaves();
} while ( $res->numRows() === 50 );

but in the current state... Ugh.

do {
$res = $dbw->query(
"DELETE FROM user_properties WHERE up_property='skin' AND
up_value NOT IN ({$dbw->makeList( $dontChange )}) LIMIT 50",
__METHOD__
);
wfWaitForSlaves();
} while ( $res->numRows() === 50 );

[Bug 52796] Support Parsoid HTML+RDFa storage alongside or instead of wikitext

2013-08-14 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52796

--- Comment #5 from Gabriel Wicke  ---
Supporting HTML storage is indeed one of our goals for this fiscal year, and an
important part of our long-term strategy. We plan to store both HTML and
wikitext (plus metadata) for a while, but are working on supporting HTML-only
wikis. Those will still be editable using wikitext by using Parsoid for the
conversion from HTML to wikitext and then back to HTML after the edit.

See our roadmap at
