Bug ID: 53903

is old (March 2013)
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW

maxsem.w...@gmail.com, mgro...@wikimedia.org,

tf...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

1. Go to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MobileFrontend

2. Click "Download snapshot" -
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:ExtensionDistributor/MobileFrontend

3. Select "1.21 (latest stable MediaWiki)"

EXPECTED

You get the latest stable snapshot compatible with MediaWiki 1.21.*

ACTUALLY

You get a snapshot made on 2013-03-15

https://git.wikimedia.org/log/mediawiki%2Fextensions%2FMobileFrontend.git/refs%2Fheads%2FREL1_21

Then you file bugs and the devs complain. ;) From a MobileFrontend user point
of view it is risky to go for another branch or master, since the stability /
compatibility or more recent versions is unclear to us.

This BUG remains one of the most annoying things in the software for active
editors with large watchlists. The problem is getting worse and worse as more
bots are appearing. The current behavior is contrary to the documentation
("Hide bot edits from the watchlist" is not what actually happens) and makes
monitoring of large numbers of articles for human-created problems a real
chore.

If you look at some of the entries on the meta blacklist ([[m:title

(?i:[GĜĞĠĢƓǤǦǴḠ69&Γ]((\W|\W.*\W)?[RŔŖŘȐȒṘṚṜṞ®Ρ₧ÞþΡρРрƤṔṖǷ](\W|\W.*\W)?)+([ǼAÀÁÂÃÄÅĀĂĄǍǞǠǺȀȂȦȺḀẠẢẤẦẨẪẬẮẰẲẴẶÆǢ4@?Α](\W|\W.*\W)?)+([VƲṼṾWŴẀẂẄẆẈ₩UÙÚÛÜŨŪŬŮŰŲǓǕǗǙǛΫΥΫΎ](\W|\W.*\W)?)+[PƤṔṖǷ₧ÞþΡρРр])

These could easily be simplified (and improved!) if AntiSpoof normalization was
applied.

Not Wikidata, but ContentHandler, which is part of the Wikidata project. Also

ContentHandler should ideally be able to recognized that both contentmodels are

Any SVG element that has an SVG mask will disappear silently.

See https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SVG_mask.svg for an example—there
should be a pink rectangle with an opacity gradient (not a square, not a solid
color, and certainly not nothing at all). Try viewing in Inkscape or Firefox to
see the correct version.

When there exists no global account Special:CentralAuth shows a error message
for that. It would be nice to also show the unattached accounts for non-global
user accounts. Than you can check for a user, if the user has accounts in other
projekts.

The api (with meta=globaluserinfo) and some external sul-utils on the
toolserver/wmflabs allows.

[Bug 53048] Text jumps while entering edit summary in Safari iOS 4.2.1

Yes, this still happens, using the stock Safari browser on iOS 4.2.1 to edit
en.m.wikipedia.org.

There's an additional issue, which I may have overlooked before or which may be
new: in portrait mode, when I'm entering the edit summary, the virtual keyboard
initially obscures the edit summary input field. As I enter a letter, the
displayed text above the keyboard scrolls up, exposing the input field for a
moment, and then immediately scrolls back down again.

Currently, the OBOD (orange bar of doom) which shows up whenever a user's talk
page is modified, uses the following messages for the sentence:
MediaWiki:Youhavenewmessagesfromusers[1] and Mediawiki:newmessageslinkplural[2]

These messages essentially make it impossible to correctly translate
MediaWiki:Youhavenewmessagesfromusers into hindi (and by extension, probably
other grammatically similar north Indian languages).

The problem is caused by lack of plural support in
MediaWiki:Youhavenewmessagesfromusers for $1, ie the number of messages
received. The difference is basically equivalent to the english difference of
is/are, with sentence structure in MediaWiki:Youhavenewmessagesfromusers needed
to be modified based on the number of new messages, which isn't possible since
the message doesn't support plural over $1 (as far as I know).

In my opinion, it would be best that these messages be joined into one message,
seeing that neither is used elsewhere (the doc doesn't specify any other uses
for the messages).

[Bug 44787] Allow excluding pages from the link notifications

A userspace-subpage, that acted as a blacklist, would also be good.

A user at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Notifications#Page_links
made this comment: "Also, is there any way to turn off notifications for a
particular page? Years ago, I was involved in Articles For Creation and created
a bunch of articles I have little actual interest in." and also clarified that
they would want to list dozens of pages.

I suspect this is a fairly common circumstance, and that enabling users to
create their own blacklists would be the best solution.

This is a strange edit, where a new editor inserted an image in the image
description of an existing image. A bug or something that should be able to be
done?

The API has always normalized ids to become lowercase, and because of this
bots/scripts have come to depend upon it.

Both of those now use uppercase ids.

I understand this but you must also understand that this is naturally how a
reader will interpret both of these things - same content, different language.
I don't think we should conflate the two..

At the very least the HTML markup for both languages should be similar and they
should be styled similar - they should both identify themselves as list of
languages with consistent meta data to be able to determine the type of
language.

I think it is a pain in the ass to click "thank", wait two minutes for the okay
dialog to load on my Android, click ok, wait three minutes for the link to
change to "thanked"... I'd be fine with a single click and a three minute wait.

Meh... I expect to see a WONTFIX from this ticket because this discussion was
just had not long ago. I've yet to have the time to finish my user-script I
was working on that would allow users to customize thank the way they wanted
(completely get rid of it or get rid of just the confirmation step). I've got
a good chunk of the completely disable it code in a NoThanks.js script in my
userspace and Ryan Kaldari provided me with a good starting point to get rid of
the confirmation step. I just need to put all of the pieces together. Of
course, if it was decided to allow this customization in the back-end php for
the extension instead, I would not complain.

Agreed. That's also the behaviour in monobook; I don't use Vector so I didn't

[Bug 53879] Thanking a user for an edit takes multiple clicks

2013-09-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53879

> Facebook (like), Twitter (favorite), LinkedIn (like), Quora (thank)
> Pinterest (heart)

I only use Facebook and LinkedIn out of these, so I'll base my reply
on them. I was also not aware of any "like" functionality of LinkedIn
and I can't seem to find it now, so I'll only base my reply on
Facebook. :)

* The "thank" link is right next to "undo" and "rollback", so
missclicks cause more issues than, say, clicking in the comment
field instead of liking a post on Facebook.

That's why the secondary step is needed, and why it was requested by
the community (and why the request was actually fulfilled instead of
being ignored, like such requests often are).

* You certainly can unlike Facebook likes at any time, while you can't
unthank anybody ever. This is also why I think that a solution where
you suddenly can unthank, but only for a brief period of time, is
  unintuitive.

Of course, this is possible to do (GMail does, or did, it, allowing
user to "unsend" an e-mail for a few seconds), but it needs a clear
indicator that something is happening right now and you can stop it
(GMail used a button on a yellow bar near the top of the screen).

* The thanks have been widely advertised for being unlike likes - in
particular because of being private (invisible to other users) and
carrying more value (to me it seems like thanking a person for
something is more "personal" or "involved" than liking something
they did). You are now implying that's not how it is.

> Given the general tone of interactions on the site, and the severe
> decline in thanks after this change, this seems to me to be a
> serious and measurable regression.

If there was such a decline (Where are the stats? Are they public?),
then it's probably caused by people getting used to the feature and
stopping playing with it. (Or possibly deciding that it's not
something they actually want to use.)

> What is worse, accidental thanks being sent (to vandals or well
> intentioned users making errors) or the serious decline in positive
> user to user actions on site?

This is a false dichotomy and a rhetorical question, both of which
should be avoided in a serious discussion. Thanks being sent for edits
one actually intended to rollback are obviously an issue for both
persons involved, especially if the author of reverted/thanked edit
made it in good faith.

[Bug 53834] Pronoun selection has gender bias

(In reply to comment #9)
> Setting this preference is optional.
> - not really, since its a radio control, you have to selection something

Yes but "I prefer not to detail" means not setting the preference. It's you
proposing to make it an active choice. :) True, we are trying to clarify that.
We could also tweak the explanation to recall the option itself, which with the
current English would make "Detailing this is optional".

(In reply to comment #9)
> The software uses its value to address you and to mention you to others using
> the appropriate grammatical gender.
> - "the software" many user don't think of websites as software, this feels
> overly technical, and isn't in simplified language that is clear on first
> read

Your proposal however is to just use "we" which is even more confusing, who is
we? Everyone can use GENDER magic word to access your preference, e.g. any6one
writing you a message on your talk page.

> - The target of "its" is unclear

Good point; "its value" can be replaced with "your choice".

> - "mention you to others" is another sentence where the context is unclear,
> in
> what cases does the software mention me to others?

Everywhere and also in the example above where it's not the site/wiki but just
a user mentioning you.

> - "grammatical gender" while technically correct, is overly specific, many
> users would have to look this up, to determine how this differs from "gender"
> and really in this particular instance does that difference really matter?

What's the problem if they don't know? If they don't, it means in their
language/experience it doesn't matter. The importance is that we don't use it
for anything else, e.g. we don't have lists of users by gender based on this
preference, we don't make the site pink for female users, we don't have a
functionality "find a male/female near you".

> This information will be public.
> - plenty of user actions and attributes are public on the site, why does this
> particular one need a callout to say so?

Because the other preferences are never public.

> - "mention you to others" is another sentence where the context is unclear,
> in what cases does the software mention me to others?

For example in page logs and in User: namespace name for your userpage. (You
really need to use a wiki in language that actually uses grammatical gender for
more things than pronouns to see how ubiquitous this is.)

(In reply to comment #9)
> This information will be public.
> - plenty of user actions and attributes are public on the site, why does this
> particular one need a callout to say so?

I assume that because gender can be considered private information like real
name or age.

Honestly, the more I'm reading this discussion, the more I'm leaning towards
the simple male / female / other choice we had earlier. There are way fewer
issues with it than apparently with what we have now.

[Bug 53879] Thanking a user for an edit takes multiple clicks

2013-09-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #4 from Jared Zimmerman (WMF) ---
Bartosz,

Facebook (like), Twitter (favorite), LinkedIn (like), Quora (thank) Pinterest
(heart)

Like I said, I've yet to see a site that requires a secondary step for an
action where a user shows appreciation for other users' actions.

Unintuitive? for all intents and purposes its a button, buttons usually have an
on and off position and you usually press, click or tap them to toggle between
two states, so one click thanks, a second click unthanks.

Given the general tone of interactions on the site, and the severe decline in
thanks after this change, this seems to me to be a serious and measurable
regression.

What is worse, accidental thanks being sent (to vandals or well intentioned
users making errors) or the serious decline in positive user to user actions on
site?

[Bug 53834] Pronoun selection has gender bias

2013-09-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53834

--- Comment #9 from Jared Zimmerman (WMF) ---
Nemo,

emotion isn't the right word, but the tone of the current explanatory text is
impersonal and due to its wording and placement (below controls) could be
confusing, many user will not know what "grammatical gender" even means,
leading to more confusion.

line by line analysis:

Setting this preference is optional.
- not really, since its a radio control, you have to selection something

The software uses its value to address you and to mention you to others using
the appropriate grammatical gender.
- "the software" many user don't think of websites as software, this feels
overly technical, and isn't in simplified language that is clear on first read
- The target of "its" is unclear
- "mention you to others" is another sentence where the context is unclear, in
what cases does the software mention me to others?
- "grammatical gender" while technically correct, is overly specific, many
users would have to look this up, to determine how this differs from "gender"
and really in this particular instance does that difference really matter?

This information will be public.
- plenty of user actions and attributes are public on the site, why does this
particular one need a callout to say so?

Similarly to bug 53862, most wikis don't have a donation system. If you set one
up, be it even a simple PayPal account and button, you can surely also take
care of editing MediaWiki:Sidebar; for all the others, this is just clutter and
configuration annoyance.

Checked with similar sample as bug 53862, 0 uses found.

helplogin-url is shown in a very prominent place by default and it should point
to an existing page to avoid confusing users with links to nonexisting pages,
similarly to bug 53862.

We have [[mw:Help:Logging in]], which given the author I assume ok and that can
be made translatable when we are comfortable about the quality of its content
(it had some "manual" translations on Meta). Linking it will help improve it,
but it's already better than the default red link.

Marked fixed. :)

[Bug 53887] New: Add link to PD help translatable pages from sidebar

2013-09-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53887

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 53887
Summary: Add link to PD help translatable pages from sidebar
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.22-git
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: General/Unknown
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: federicol...@tiscali.it
Depends on: 53862
Blocks: 43591
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

It's normal for software to have some place from the interface bringing you to
the general documentation for it.

Bug 53862 removed the link to a local help page from the default sidebar
because such a page doesn't usually exist for obvious reasons; we can point to
[[mw:Help:Contents]] which is already available in over 30 languages and is
improving thanks to the Translate extension usage expanding in the namespace.

(In reply to comment #3)
> In my opinion, there should be release notes for this.

+1
As nobody uses release notes, probably worth mentioning in [[mw:MediaWiki
1.22]] too. I've updated
https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Manual%3APage_customizations&diff=31&oldid=713031
, the page lists some more links to cleanup. If we do enough of them we can
write something nicer in [[mw:MediaWiki 1.22]].
