Ok, so people avoid things which cause overload but still in July we had about 2M additional job queue items. And it seems that's fine. What's not fine then, what is this bug about? Can we please identify the problem and the source of it? Otherwise I don't see how one can identify solutions. > I have a hard time seeing a similarly good reason for > making > 8 million null edits at a rate of ~4/second. I'm having a hard time too. They are just speculations without answers to what above. > Especially without talking to > the > people responsible for keeping the site running (This makes sense.) > and in contravention of the > bot > policy. Sigh. There isn't any contravention of the bot policy. The relevant local page is Wikipedia:Don't worry about performance. Hint: the policies or pseudo-policies you are looking for are on wikitech, e.g. wikitech:Robot policy. I don't remember which one precisely but there is one written by Tim which explicitly says "if you're causing problems/bringing the site down we'll block you", period. In this case however, I still don't see what the problem is. Again, why is 2M not a problem but 3M yes? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. Popular templates are protected for a reason, and editors don't edit them needlessly, as they know about the high load this causes. For templates there is no way around the load this creates when they really need to be edited. I have a hard time seeing a similarly good reason for making 8 million null edits at a rate of ~4/second. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50296 Risker changed: What|Removed |Added CC||risker...@gmail.com --- Comment #19 from Risker --- I need to point out the irony of developing an editing interface with the good faith but technically challenged user in mind, and then expecting them to know how to use their browser/operating system to insert an emdash (a character not present on the standard English keyboard, but used over a million times on English Wikipedia). Given the target group for this extension, this isn't a low-priority enhancement, it is core functionality. In fact, the existing editorial base uses the edit tools almost exclusively over their browser/operating system, and I suspect many of them (including me) have no idea how to do use the latter. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54406 --- Comment #20 from Nemo --- I'm not sure how familiar you are with the actual writing and enacting of those social rules, but surely here nothing was done against them. The social rules in the various variations of the global m:Bot policy are not about performance; the speed limit is typically driven by users not wanting their Special:RecentChanges and Special:WatchList to be flooded, which in this case obviously didn't happen (so let's not even start debating what's an "edit"). Besides, I don't really have an answer yet to my question, though we're getting nearer; probably it would be faster if we avoided off-topic discussions on alleged abuse and similar stuff. (In reply to comment #19) > (In reply to comment #15) > > I still see no answer about what the spike on July 29 was: are you saying it > > wasn't about parsoid, but just a coincidence? https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54406 --- Comment #19 from Gabriel Wicke --- (In reply to comment #15) > I still see no answer about what the spike on July 29 was: are you saying it > wasn't about parsoid, but just a coincidence? Or that it was normal to queue > over a million jobs in a couple of days (initial caching of all pages or > something?) but the second million was too much? Just editing a handful really popular templates (some are used in >7 million articles) can enqueue a lot of jobs (10 titles per job, so ~700k jobs). As can editing content at high rates. Core happens to cap the number of titles to re-render at 200k, while Parsoid re-renders all, albeit with a delay. Ideally we'd prioritize direct edits over template updates as only the former has any performance impact. Editing a page with slightly out-of-date template rendering will still yield correct results. Longer-term our goal is to reduce API requests further so that we can run the Parsoid cluster at capacity without taking out the API. And yes, I was referring to very straightforward social rules that are designed to prevent our users from overloading the site with expensive operations. We currently provide powerful API access that can easily be abused. If the attitude that everything that is not technically blocked must surely be ok becomes more popular we'll have to neuter those APIs significantly. Maybe it is actually time to technically enforce social rules more strictly, for example by automatically blocking abusers. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 54459] New: Tiny url like system for Wikimedia sites
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54459 Web browser: --- Bug ID: 54459 Summary: Tiny url like system for Wikimedia sites Product: MediaWiki Version: unspecified Hardware: All OS: All Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: Unprioritized Component: Redirects Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org Reporter: to.aru.shiroi.n...@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified Mobile Platform: --- I'd like to propose a schema for a redirect system for all Mediawiki sites for improved QR code compatibility. My proposal has several parts. Version 1 is the simplest QR code variant with 21x21 ROWxCOL's. With high error correction this allows a total of 17 (30% correction)/27 (25% correction) alpha-numeric characters (0 to 9, A to Z, space, $ % * + - . / :). Version 2 25x25 with 34 (30% correction)/48 (25% correction). Article titles can be light years long so a shorter redirect would be helpful. However even something as simple as http://r.wikimedia.org/ has 13 characters to begin with. I don't know if enwp.org is under WMF control but http://r.enwp.org/ would be 18 characters. The remaining characters would be used for the redirect itself. Each page on wikis have a page ID, a decimal value. However these on some wikis can get fairly large. En.wp has 40,592,460 pages for example. This can however be expressed in base 36 since QR codes will have to be alpha-numeric anyways. So instead of 8 base 10 digits same number would be expressed with 5 base 36 digits (O61CC). Furthermore with an encoding of something like PLLCC 9 characters would be enough to determine the Project (Wikipedia, Wikinews, Wikisource, etc - 36 total projects), Language (en, fr, es, ru, etc - 36 * 36 = 1296 languages), Code-word for Article ID (36^6=2,176,782,336 possible IDs). So... Possibly with http://r.enwp.org/PLLCC 27 characters would fit 25% correction version 1 scheme. Once this is implemented perhaps WMUK's QRpedia may be easier to implement. This relates to: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Project_chat#Article_specific_QR_codes I realize the above link may become obsolete with archiving... :p -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 54444] java is screwed up
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5 --- Comment #2 from Yuvi Panda --- So, after investigation, it turned out that: 1. There was a copy of JDK and JRE 6 *and* 7 installed on -dev. These aren't on puppet. 2. There's only a copy of JRE 7 on the exec nodes. This is properly puppetized. So default 'java' on -dev seems to resolve to v6 for some reason, and that is not found in exec nodes, hence this problem. I've 'fixed' it by getting rid of all traces of Java 6 from -dev (by hand), and then adding a puppet change to install JDK 7 on -dev. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

[Bug 54455] New: Drilldown has issues with strings using plus signs and numbers
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54455 Web browser: Google Chrome Bug ID: 54455 Summary: Drilldown has issues with strings using plus signs and numbers Product: MediaWiki extensions Version: REL1_19 branch Hardware: PC URL: http://dixwell.referata.com/wiki/Special:BrowseData/Pl aces OS: Windows 7 Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: Unprioritized Component: SemanticDrilldown Assignee: yaro...@gmail.com Reporter: pierre612...@yahoo.com Classification: Unclassified Mobile Platform: --- On the Dixwell Dossier, [1] another website I'm now actively maintaining on Referata, I'm having a bit of a problem. Some time ago, I created a property, "Area code", [2] specifically for the infobox used with that site's Place profiles. [3] (This property has the type String.) Querying with it on Special:Ask will give me the correct results: for example, Area code::+1-767 will display all places in Dominica; Area code::+1-647 returns Toronto, its suburbs, and home province Ontario; and so on. But when those same properties appear through Special:BrowseData/Places, something unfathomable happens: Whenever I select an area code from the Drilldown menu, it will show me a list of *almost every single place that has the "Area code" property*—nearly all of such profiles created so far! [4] Not even removing the plus sign ( + ) in front of the code seems to resolve this. [5] (Roseau is the only page that's managed to avert this, thanks to the Unicode phone symbol before it: ☎ 1-767.) Maybe it's because use of the "+" conflicts with the default Drilldown settings? (I actually wrote that down in my notes a few days ago [and I quote from the original index card]: "Maybe + sign in AC: +1-xxx conflicts with Drilldown code, as do any numbers that start [string] values". Maybe, but I can't be quite sure at this moment.) Well, I'm a bit stuck, and I may hold off adding more places to the Dossier until this issue is attended to. From here, I have two possible ideas: 1) Change the property type into Text, or maybe Number. (Tried "Telephone number" some minutes ago, but area codes of this format are NOT accepted by this type.) 2) Readjust the code in the property's Place infobox field, [6] so that I may get something like ☎ 1-xxx, ☎ +1-xxx, or (1) xxx to satisfy the Drilldown syntax or whatever. Folks, can you help me out—and fast? And who else has experienced this problem on some other Referata/SMW wiki? (I'd like to get some hints.) Kind of urgent here! P.S. I've got another semantic bug on the way tomorrow. (Version: MW 1.19.2; SMW 1.9 alpha. Browsers: Presumably all [tested on Chrome].) Or that it was normal to queue over a million jobs in a couple of days (initial caching of all pages or something?) but the second million was too much? https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54453 Web browser: --- Bug ID: 54453 Summary: Don’t override site authors’ styles by using inline style Product: MediaWiki extensions Version: unspecified Hardware: All OS: All Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: Unprioritized Component: UniversalLanguageSelector Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org Reporter: mich...@zajac.ca CC: alolita.sha...@gmail.com, amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il, kartik.mis...@gmail.com, niklas.laxst...@gmail.com, pgi...@wikimedia.org, run...@gmail.com, s.mazel...@xs4all.nl, santhosh.thottin...@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified Mobile Platform: --- The ULS specifies fonts by injecting inline style sheets into the DOM. This overrides site style sheets, takes control away from site authors and administrators, as well as readers, including those using accessibility technology, and encourages authors to use the harmful !important CSS keyword. An example of the problem: on en.wiktionary there is a mature framework of classes used to set fonts by script code, alongside the use of HTML lang attributes. The ULS randomly interferes with this. For example, in the page Fraktur, a passage of text is specified as to set it in a Fraktur font. The class .Latf applies font-family: UnifrakturMaguntia, a web font that is *provided by the ULS.* The ULS adds a style="font-family: sans-serif;" which would be needless otherwise, but in en.Wiktionary overrides the authors’ CSS which resides in MediaWiki:Common.css https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Fraktur#German https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Common.css How are authors supposed to reliably specify correct fonts? How are authors supposed to specify web fonts provided by the ULS? Why are fonts specified with inline CSS, which robs all control from authors? Why is German-language text specifically formatted as sans-serif? The ULS should operate using the standard framework of lang attributes, classes, and style sheets instead of inline CSS, providing authors, editors, readers, and users of accessibility technology with several avenues to control or override its behaviour. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
