[Bug 54730] Show the watch star icon also to anonymous desktop users

2013-09-29 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54730

--- Comment #3 from MZMcBride b...@mzmcbride.com ---
(In reply to comment #2)
MobileFrontend does show the star icon to anonymous users.

MobileFrontend has been making a lot of ... questionable design choices lately.
Some call it being experimental. Others are less sure. Either way, it's
probably not a great model to emulate.

This request is essentially asking for MediaWiki to intentionally expose a
non-functioning control. The general design principle in MediaWiki is to only
show functional user interface elements (for example, unprivileged users are
not shown a delete tab or a protect tab), though perhaps there's a reasonable
case to make an exception here.

The drag-and-drop operation previously had the appearance of being successful,
in that the text would change to the dropped position. After the text was
moved, the save button wasnt enabled.

Now the text can only be picked up and dragged around, but the text move
operation is cancelled when the text is dropped.

The bug has been fixed, and I am closing as such. Probably as part of another
piece of related work.

For bonus points, VE shouldnt allow the text to be picked up and dragged. I've
opened that as an enhancement bug 54757.

[Bug 54730] Show the watch star icon also to anonymous desktop users

2013-09-29 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54730

--- Comment #4 from Nemo federicol...@tiscali.it ---
I remember for sure that it's proved the watch star attracts a significant
number of new registrations, though they have a lower conversion to active
users (they're mostly passive).

«On the mobile version, the star symbol for the watchlist is shown to all
users, to encourage them to log in or create an account.»
[[m:Wikimedia Foundation Report, February 2013]]

«Readers show interest in saving articles offline, bookmarking and ‘watching’
articles, and rating articles/contributions/contributors.»
[[m:Research:Wikipedia Mobile User Research]]

Well, these are not really the quotations I was looking for but anyway I think
it's proved this bug is a good idea, though it's not going to be the silver
bullet for editor recruitment. The star is also quite unobtrusive, unlike a new
tab.

[Mid-air collision.]

(In reply to comment #3)
This request is essentially asking for MediaWiki to intentionally expose a
non-functioning control. The general design principle in MediaWiki is to only
show functional user interface elements (for example, unprivileged users are
not shown a delete tab or a protect tab), though perhaps there's a reasonable
case to make an exception here.

This is a good point to make, but I don't think action=delete is a fair
comparison.
A fair comparison are IMHO red links: they are established practice because
they expose the nature of the wiki, though they are not super-intuitive and
they've had their problems (bug 13058, bug 17288, bug 32052 + I think their
title said create page at some point), not to mention that on en.wiki you
have to become autoconfirmed in order to actually do something with them.
I also see upload links in the sidebar on en.wiki and it.wiki but those are
arguably bugs of those local customisations.

What the red link teaches us is that we must not send users to a place where
they are going to be confused. If I try action=delete as unregistered users I
only get a nasty permission error; if I try action=watch, I get a link to
login, then I have to click Join {{SITENAME}} and register, then go back and
watch my article, which is not ideal but is doable (I feared a token error, now
that watchlisting requires a token).
Possible improvements (before or after adding the watchlist button) are:
1) add a returnto so that I can more easily get back where I started, generate
a token in some way;
2) reduce the number of clicks or otherwise improve the location where the
unregistered user is sent (maybe a page linking also the atom feed? or
something else not requiring registration which the user could be expecting
there).

I couldn't find a way to click the links while editing and go to the target
page. It's not easily available in the source editor, so it's not really a
regression, but I find myself needing this features every time I edit, because
the links are blue and look like links.

GMail and Google have reasonably good ways of going to links' targets in
editing mode, so hints can be taken from them.

Bawolff, do you have suggestions on how to break down this bug in actionable
items?
We probably need the following:
1) some maintenance script to list files with each of the problems in question
(oi_archive_name empty, archived versions linking 404 Not Found etc.),
2) scripts or whatever to correct the wrong metadata (where that's the problem)
or look for missing files in NFS and restore them,
3) bug to track the need to do something about the leftovers.

I'm downloading all the Commons files with emijrp's script, so we already have
huge lists of suspects, e.g.

[Bug 54760] New: sendConfirmAndMigrateEmail.php: add an option to include emailconfirmed accounts

sendConfirmAndMigrateMail has two purposes with its [[Special:MergeAccount]]
link: confirming the email and merging unattached accounts; however, if a
account has a confirmed email, it's skipped:

if ( $user-isEmailConfirmed() ) {
$this-output( ERROR: The user '$username@$wgDBname' already has a
confirmed email address\n );
return;
}

I think it's conceivable that we or someone may want to solicit those global
users too to merge the unattached accounts belonging to them.

In Wikimedia projects' case, if I understand the data correctly, they are the
global users corresponding to a subset of those 114,604 non-attached accounts
who clash with a global account as of 2013-05-06.
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Admin_tools_development/SUL_Audit#Metrics
According to [[mw:Admin tools development/SUL Audit/Metrics 20130417]] about 80
% of the unattached accounts have an email set; no idea how many global
accounts do nor how many of those are already emailconfirmed, but it's probably
a good proportion.

[Bug 54762] New: find a way to deploy PHPUnit on production machines

Our first Jenkins runner (gallium) had PHPUnit installed using pear. We then
upgraded it from time to time using the pear command.

This has at least two issues:

- we blindly install from a third party repository
- the update has to be done manually on each slave (currently two: gallium and
lanthanum).

We would need to streamline PHPUnit upgrade process. Either by having it
provided by a Debian package or using git-deploy.

Culprits:
- the Debian package ship 3.6.x while we are relying on PHPUnit 3.7.x
- there is no tutorials for git-deploy

This prevents us from running PHPUnit jobs on any slaves (bug 53594)

The pep8 jobs are non voting per default. We would want to make them voting to
avoid having to add exception in Zuul configuration.

To be able to achieve that, we need to look at each of the repositories having
pep8 jobs, make sure they pass and then adjust Zuul configuration to remove the
voting: true exceptions.

For reference:

Incorrect:
div

# list item 2/div

Correct:
div
# list item 1
# list item 2
/div

It it essentially bad wiki formatting to include closing tags on the same line
as wiki list items. So I'm closing this.

Reopening, since (although the mistagged log lines went to almost zero) we do
not observe the expected drop in requests per carrier.

Additionally, we also see IPv6 addresses (without X-Forward-For) coming with
zero tags [1]. Such lines should not receive zero markers, as carriers do not
come with IPv6 addresses up to now. Those IPv6 zero lines are just a few per
day, but they might hint at a further issue in the logging infrastructure.

[Bug 35367] Wikimedia Commons old files errors

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35367

--- Comment #8 from Bawolff (Brian Wolff) bawolff...@gmail.com ---
Well the easiest to find would be everything select oi_name, oi_timestamp from
oldimage where oi_archive_name = ''; this could be done by anyone with labs

After that one can look in the thumbnail log. From what I've seen of it, its
full of line about thumbnail failed due to missing src path (this seems to be
the main cause of failing png thumbnails now that vips has removed the size
limit on that format)

As an aside, It'd be nice if we graphed number of missing files somewhere in
ganglia. Ancedotally it seems like there are more of them then there used to
be. It would be good to get real stats on this very scary problem.

[Bug 16316] Tags like embed are needed

2013-09-29 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16316

--- Comment #1 from Brion Vibber br...@wikimedia.org ---
(Just going through some old bugs and updating...)

Discussion linked above got archived to:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Graphic_Lab_School/Images_to_improve/Archive/Resolved_2#Need_a_way_to_turn_21_seperate_images_into_a_single_app-like_image.

This sort of request could be handled with something like the EmbedScript
extension I did some experiments on last year:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:EmbedScript

This allows writing arbitrary JavaScript code and HTML to be displayed in an
iframe, using a separate domain as an in-browser security layer to isolate
the running code from the rest of the wiki.

See also bug 54213, a newer tracking bug for more purpose-built systems that
the multimedia group may be working on soon...

So we've done this for Lua modules, JS, and CSS pages with CodeEditor extension

For highlighting in wikitext editing, if interested in current state please add

[Bug 28920] Allowing HTML tag to identify e.g. English text embedded in a non-English page

2013-09-29 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28920

--- Comment #2 from Brion Vibber br...@wikimedia.org ---
So, any page content or UI component that uses wikitext for output can use
span lang=enblah/span already.

As I understand the problem is that folks would like to do this in messages
that are plaintext...

Possibilities include:

* change those messages from plaintext to wikitext (are there performance
issues, or issues with being able to render things for JavaScript client-side
usage?)

* add a new message format that does some kind of restricted HTML, use that in
place of plaintext/wikitext/raw HTML.

* ???

[Bug 40832] ResourceLoader: Add support for @embed of images over urls in CSSMin

2013-09-29 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=40832

--- Comment #5 from Brion Vibber br...@wikimedia.org ---
I would recommend strongly against embedding arbitrary URLs, as that just
sounds like trouble to deal with (DoS, cache invalidation, who knows what else
:)

However being able to embed a file that's uploaded to the wiki? Might be useful
for things like gadgets and site scripts -- that can also do handy things like:

* abstract the low-level URL from the file (even if you don't embed)
* guard against embedding overlarge files

Perhaps something specific to ResourceLoaderWikiModule...

I'm going to Be Bold and 'wontfix' this; the little link icons are awful and

If people want pretty link formatting for specific purposes, consider using a

[Bug 53806] Clarify zero markers in squid logs for IPs that should not get one

2013-09-29 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53806

--- Comment #18 from christ...@quelltextlich.at ---
(In reply to comment #17)
Additionally, we also see IPv6 addresses (without X-Forward-For) coming with
 zero tags [...]

Those were just IPv4 in IPv6 addresses.
Netmapper seems to be aware of them, while varnish acls were not.

Thanks Faidon for pointing that out!

Bawolff? For refreshing thumbnails you need to purge the image page.

[Bug 54767] New: ItemPage.get() chokes on labels with a 'removed' value

2013-09-29 Thread bugzilla-daemon

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 54767
Summary: ItemPage.get() chokes on labels with a 'removed' value
   Product: Pywikibot
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
   URL: https://www.wikidata.org/w/api.php?action=wbgetentitie
sids=Q3595042format=jsonfm
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Wikidata
  Assignee: pywikipedia-b...@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: legoktm.wikipe...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Example item:
https://www.wikidata.org/w/api.php?action=wbgetentitiesids=Q3595042format=jsonfm

labels: {
tt: {
language: tt,
removed:
},

I'm not sure what 'removed' means, but at the very least the bot shouldn't die
on it.
