action=ulslocalization is the most common API request on the cluster at the
moment, amounting to ~41% of all requests. You shouldn't call the API on every
page load. Find an alternative to using the API and/or don't load the language
localization data until a user clicks on the cog icon.

Please get in touch with Greg G. to schedule a deployment for a fix -- this
should be done ASAP.

Visiting a page, display:none is applied to the VE edit button (li#ca-ve-edit).
This css is at the header of the page.

Since no button is shown, how anyone can use VE?
Am I missing something?

A few comments:
1. UI strings are needed for the tooltip of the clickable elements, so (some)
strings must be available.
2. I thought this was cached . If not, should be.

Question:
3. Is this new behavior, or has this behavior changed recently? If it is not
new, it should have been like this since we implemented L10n loading through
the API instead if directly loading the JSON.

Today I had a edit conflict on the german village pump. A user leaved a
section. Than I started my edit will the same user changed something at his
text. That gave me a edit conflict, but I was wonder about the diff, which was
shown on that page. The diff only contains my added section. In my opinion that
should merged automatically. After a look in the history, I have seen the edit
of the user, but that new text was not shown in the textarea on the edit
conflict page. When I would copy the added sentence from botton text area to
top text area the edit from the other user will be lost.

I have saved my sentence in the dashboard and go to village pump again, pressed
edit at the section and paste my sentence and than saved. That works.

Please avoid that the edit conflict page shows the old text. Thanks.

Removed "see also" to bug 50391, as that was duplicate requests in the same
page load. This is not about that. This issue is about repeated requests, where
repeated loads of the same data between page view should probably be avoided.

I also notice that the "action=ulslocalization" API call goes to the site
(nl.wikipedia.org) instead of bits.wikimedia.org. Not sure is we can/should
make that call to come from bits.

--- Comment #4 from Brion Vibber  ---
Couple quick drive-by notes:

* If most page views only need one tooltip, that should probably be bundled as
a message in the main ResourceLoader module...

* Can the whole thing be redone as a ResourceLoader module (which *would* be
served from bits), or is the format of the API calls locked in in some way that
prevents that? It looks like it doesn't rely on anything user- or
session-specific.

* I do see some public caching headers being set in the source:

$this->getMain()->setCacheMode( 'public' );
$this->getMain()->setCacheMaxAge( 300 );

however I don't know if all those make it through to the outside.

[Bug 56512] New: CC license not recognized by WM Commons image uploader

Bug ID: 56512
   Summary: CC license not recognized by WM Commons image uploader
   Product: Wikimedia
   Version: wmf-deployment
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: General/Unknown
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: l...@bluerasberry.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Wikimedia Commons has an image upload Wizard.

In the part of the wizard which requests a user to name the license for a file
which is not their own, "Creative Commons license" is an option.

There are radio buttons in that option to choose CC-By and CC-By-SA 2.5 and
3.0. I had a file which was CC-By-2.0, so I selected other option.

This gave me a box where I could put wikitext and preview it. I put in
{{Cc-by-2.0}} and clicked preview, and it called the proper template. However,
when I clicked save, it said something like "this seems to not contain valid
wikitext" and would not let me proceed.

I had to lie and say that I had a different license, and when I was done with
the wizard I correct my lie. There must be some problem in which the wizard is
expecting certain answers in the text box and it did not like the way I
presented my valid response. My response should have been accepted.

[Bug 56509] ULS makes too many action=ulslocalization API calls

2013-11-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56509

--- Comment #8 from Niklas Laxström  ---
Please read bug 41489 for more information why we ended up with the current
solution.

Points to consider:
* In jquery.uls we cannot have dependencies on MediaWiki components.
* In jquery.uls (via jquery.i18n) we have a custom, json-based i18n file
format.
* Serving that file directly from bits is not possible because of cross-origin
restrictions.
* We are not going to change the file format from json to anything executable.
* We implemented API module which just servers the files as-is with some
caching.
* The API module does not have version based cache invalidation.
* Doing this via resource loader module would mean that we need to wrap or
reformat the json data into JavaScript on the fly and implement support for
that in jquery.i18n.

It's not obvious to me which action(s) should be taken here. Some options:
1) Delay the api call until ULS trigger is clicked. This needs some refactoring
moving the trigger related tooltip message*s* from json to i18n.php file.

[Bug 56509] ULS makes too many action=ulslocalization API calls

This is a different thing, and like stated on that bug, the code you pointed
out is not executed in our environment. Instead of "I told you so" I'd like to
see us all work together to design and implement a good solution.

It is not now. It used to be until I pointed it out.

I did not mean to be all "told you so", I just pointed to an earlier discussion
about the same topic (we're now talking partially about the code written to fix
that bug, as far as I understand it).

(In reply to comment #8)
> * In jquery.uls we cannot have dependencies on MediaWiki components.

I'll dare to say that yes, you can and should if it means making the
performance more acceptable, even if it means maintaining a fork. (And to be
honest, the division of ULS into various modules has looked artificial to me
ever since I learned it exists.)

> * Serving that file directly from bits is not possible because of

Can't you serve it as JSONP? Can't you have CORS set up so that the
restrictions go away?

Not a regression; this was probably always broken because of the use of ==
instead of === in the relevant parts of the code.

In fact, this is documented at

Fixing this may break compatibility with existing wikitext.

Failing with PNG, but perfectly ok with MathJax:

Autonym font loading causes hits to the [[Font/Autonym.ttf]] article.
Incredible, but apparently true:
http://stats.grok.se/en/latest30/Font/Autonym.ttf (unless the stats are wrong).

I have absolutely no idea what could be causing this. Maybe the stats are
completely bonkers, or ULS does something very, very wrong. Or maybe it's a
server misconfiguration issue. Either way something's incredibly broken.

(Not sure what product/component would be most appropriate, going with ULS for
now.)

2013-11-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56514

--- Comment #2 from Santhosh Thottingal  ---
I did some search in the CSS

The fontface is defined in
UniversalLanguageSelector/lib/jquery.uls/css/jquery.uls.css as

@font-face {
font-family: 'Autonym';
src: url('font/Autonym.eot');
src: local('Autonym'),
url('font/Autonym.woff') format('woff'),
url('font/Autonym.ttf') format('truetype');
font-style: normal;
}

And the RL outputs the css as:

@font-face{
font-family:'Autonym';

src:url(//bits.wikimedia.org/static-1.23wmf1/extensions/UniversalLanguageSelector/lib/jquery.uls/css/font/Autonym.eot?2013-10-24T17:33:20Z);
src:local('Autonym'),

url(//bits.wikimedia.org/static-1.23wmf1/extensions/UniversalLanguageSelector/lib/jquery.uls/css/font/Autonym.woff?2013-10-24T17:33:20Z)
format('woff'),
url('font/Autonym.ttf') format('truetype');
font-style: normal;
}

For the truetype part, see the URL is wrong. For old browsers without woff
support, the ttf will be tried and I assume that cause the hit.

As a side note, this css was changed in master yesterday (see
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/93034/ and
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/93035/) So the fonts will be served using
jquery.webfonts which takes care of URLs to font repo.

It's very unlikely that we'll start adding per-user preferences to switch
things like this on and off (some VE version of bug 9754); that's a very
complex and confusing thing to allow.

Note BTW that bug 11130 is complaining about assuming users have JS (already
known inside VE), lack of ability to cache (fixed by VE's nature), and taking
up lots of screen estate (fixed by how we'll do this); I don't think it's a
direct comparison. I'd also note that bug 11130 hasn't been done despite it
being filed 6 years ago, which strongly suggests that it's not a priority.

[Bug 56516] New: VisualEditor: Do not suggest templates which are not intended to be used in the content namespaces (e.g. meta-templates)

2013-11-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Bug ID: 56516
   Summary: VisualEditor: Do not suggest templates which are not
intended to be used in the content namespaces (e.g.
meta-templates)
   Product: Wikimedia
   Version: wmf-deployment
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Bugzilla
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: mybugs.m...@gmail.com

Classification: Unclassified

Intention:
I wanted to help a new user to find a template to add a reference to an
article.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. The user was already using Visual Editor. So, suppose we clicked in the link
https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random?veaction=edit&uselang=en
2. I instructed the user to open the transclusion interface (More >
Transclusion)
3. Since I knew the name of our citation templates, I suggested the user to
type "citar livro" in the "New template" field

Actual Results:
Visual Editor displayed a list of possible matches, containing the following
templates:
 - Citar livro
 - Citar livro/doc
 - Citar livro/autor
 - Citar livro/coautores
 - Citar livro/dados
 - Citar livro/coautores/doc
 - Citar livro/ref
Of these, only the first one is supposed to be used in the articles. The others
are just auxiliary templates (meta-templates), used by the main one. But new
users do not know that, and get confused by this!

Expected Results:
Visual Editor should provide only the options which are useful.

Reproducible: Didn't try

A possible solution for this would be the addition of a new property to the
template data, to allow template authors to document certain templates with
"auxiliary: true". Then Visual Editor could filter its current search results
to show only templates satisfying "auxiliary: false".

The "Beta" personal menu item should only be shown for users who opted in to at
least one beta feature. (I mean genuinely opted in, not including the users who
merely did not opt out of default beta features.)

The personal menu can already be rather crowded (the default 6 items, ULS,
Echo, LiquidThreads, sandbox links from site JS, and I'm probably missing
some), and the "Beta" itself can become a *lot* longer in translations (the
expression "beta feature" is not directly translateable to many languages).

I have once in the past created a superficially similar thing in site JS on
pl.wp – a gadget preferences manager which added its own special page, which
was linked from the personal menu – and I was promptly and bluntly told to get
rid of that link. (It is now only linked from the Preferences pages and
descriptions of each gadget that uses it and everyone is happy.)

(Personally I would consider this – or some other solution to the crowdedness
issue – a blocker to wider release.)

Assuming that your wiki is in English and you have the Translate extension
installed:

1. Write a page in English.
2. Mark it for translation.

FuzzyBot will create an /en version of the page that will have exactly the same
content as the original one, in English.

EXPECTED

/en page says "Translate this page" just like the original. In fact, perhaps it
could be a simple redirect, if the /en is really needed.

ACTUAL

"This page is a translated version of a page XYZ and the translation is 100%
complete."

Well, it is not a translation. Furthermore, if they click the link at XYZ they
end up in 'the same page' (to the user's eye). Confusing.

[Bug 19412] #time parser function can't read local language month names

2013-11-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19412

--- Comment #23 from Ryan Kaldari  ---
This isn't a trivial problem to fix, especially since, as Huji mentions, some
month names are associated with different calendars (or even multiple
calendars). Take "Nisan" for example. In the Hebrew calendar, Nisan is
sometimes month 7 and sometimes month 8. However, Nisan is month 1 in the
Assyrian calendar (and the Hebrew ecclesiastic calendar). We would need to add
explicit flags for not only language, but also calendar, which would then
necessitate considering all the different possible ways of writing dates and
times in each language and calendar, as well as how to deal with the almost
infinite number of ambiguous cases. Even the relatively "simple" case that we
currently support, English-only Gregorian calendar, is fraught with bugs and
inconsistencies. Just imagine multiplying that by 300 languages and then
multiplying again by the 50 or so calendars currently in use around the world
(some of which are quite difficult to convert to the Gregorian calendar). Not
to mention that some languages support multiple number systems.

In the history of computer programming, no one has ever solved this problem,
and honestly I doubt anyone ever will. Even a modest attempt would probably
need its own open source project separate from MediaWiki.

My suggestion for a practical solution would be to distribute the problem and
have each wiki write their own Lua module for translating their particular
language and calendars into ISO 8601 compatible date-time formats. Each module
could then be used to provide the input for #time.

Recommend WONTFIX.

This is what EventLogging does (schemas are JSON); see
includes/ResourceLoaderSchemaModule.php in the EventLogging repository. JSON is
already JavaScript, so to convert a JSON blob into something executable all you
need to do is to wrap it in a function invocation. See the getScript module in
that file.

- Wrap the code in an RL module, a la EventLogging.
- Defer loading until the page has finished loading OR the hover event on the
cog is triggered. You don't have to wait for a user click, but you don't have
to block the page either.

> 2) Improve the caching of the api call

Not an option, IMO. I don't have hard numbers, but if I recall correctly Yahoo!
found that 30-40% of requests were always uncached, even with aggressive
caching, presumably due to people resetting their browsers, using public
kiosks, etc. A full HTTP request is really expensive. If you use
ResourceLoader, you can fetch the JSON data and JS / CSS resources in a single
request (which I think we'll want to do -- it's not just the messages that can
be deferred but some of the JS/CSS too), and you'll benefit from localStorage
when that gets rolled out.

> 3) Use resource loader. I currently have no idea how this would look in
> practice.

Something like this:

class JsonMessagesModule  extends ResourceLoaderModule {
function getDependencies() {
return array( 'ext.uls.moduleWithInitFunc' );
}

function getModifiedTime( ResourceLoaderContext $context ) {
return filemtime('/path/to/json');
}

function getScript( ResourceLoaderContext $context ) {
$json = file_get_contents('/path/to/json');
return Xml::encodeJsCall( 'ext.uls.initFunc', array( $json ) );
}
}

> Hopefully we will have clarity on this on Monday. Have a great weekend.

Yep! I think this is very solvable, so no sweat. Have a great weekend all.

As a quick fix, this should be set to 31536000 (one year), not 300 (five
minutes). Don't worry about invalidation since we'll move this to
ResourceLoader anyway.

I just realized that the hardcoded license still shows up in the mobile edit

license):

It's more than updating the database. The DNS software itself does not support
