These were small size category changes rather than file uploads or large page edits. I believe most failures have been on putting pages rather than getting them, but I have seen getting pages causing this failure. As everyone appears affected, not just API users, I have asked for feedback at the Village pump (http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Village_pumpdiff=prevoldid=109634734). The mediawiki-l discussion has not finished, it's still going on. In fact the last message on the topic in mediawiki-l was under an hour ago. There has been no discussion on wikitech-l yet. And frankly some of us devs aren't always subscribed to mediawiki-l because the subscription can get too heavy to manage. This is also not a black and white or boolean topic. Accept the bug as-is and WONTFIX the bug are NOT the only options here. There are other possible outcomes such as modifying the exact subject or realigning the goal of the bug or making it dependent on some other bugs that would have to be solved before the bug could be fixed. When using replication on a MediaWiki database, the following warnings show up
in the MySQL log when using the Translate extension:
[Warning] Unsafe statement written to the binary log using statement format
since BINLOG_FORMAT = STATEMENT. Statement is unsafe because it accesses a
non-transactional table after accessing a transactional table within the same
transaction. Statement: INSERT /* DatabaseTTMServer::insertSource */ INTO
`translate_tmf` (tmf_sid,tmf_text) VALUES ('421','search data')
This problem is caused by the fact that the translate_tmf is using the MyISAM
storage engine. All MediaWiki tables are using InnoDB except for this
translate_tmf and the searchindex table, as InnoDB lacks the FULLTEXT index
support. See http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual_talk:Searchindex_table.
Transactions to the translate_tmf table should be separated from other
transactions to the database to prevent unsafe statements from happening when
using replication.

Larger WMF wikis are seeing more spikes of LogPager queries of which an example
follows. These have had some recent tuning by initially removing forced indexes
that no longer suited data set sizes, which has helped (10min down to ~100s),
but we need to do more.

The remaining problems are:
- The queries are fast enough until one hits cold data leading a slave to
bottleneck on disk. The buffer pool churn has a flow-on effect on other
normally fast queries which become false positives in the slow log. Especially
problematic when a crawler like MSNBOT triggers a spike of these.
- The tag_summary table often has a relatively low cardinality for ts_log_id
(many nulls, few ids).
- Sometimes a slave logs multiple identical copies of a query (always a form
filtered by log_user) at intervals of several seconds. Presumably someone
refreshing a page that is too slow to respond.
Possibilities:
- Pull out only log_id,log_user first to reduce the impact of the filesort and
grab user and tag data in follow-up batch query. If the query plan sitches to
using Index Condition Pushdown (Using index condition in explain), cold data
is less of an issue as fewer table rows are hit and fewer pages read.
- Limit the size of the dataset to be considered. By timestamp perhaps, last X
months maybe. For heavier users only?
- Improve the method of retrieving ts_tags using something other than
tag_summary. Or remove it entirely.
- Isolate these queries to specific slaves (like watchlist).

So you might miss groups, if you haven't got sufficient permissions. One of the arguments against fixing bug 42594 (i.e. applying dofollow to external links by default) is that the default configuration provides no spam protection. The problem is, some wikis, e.g. those on corporate intranets, will not be exposed to spam, so they don't need spam protection; it would just get in the way. But we want to keep the installer options as simple as possible, and adding questions about spam protection would complicate it. So what can we do? Should we include spam protection by default, and let those who don't need it disable it? If so, what should be the default spam protection? Personally, I've found Asirra takes care of most of my spam problem.
