Anything not already taken is probably fine. Normally we use initials, but ac

(I assume "holidays" here means US thanksgiving and today "weekend".) As some
of the delays seem to stem from "internal project", how about hiring/funding
someone knowledgeable about the current Toolserver (or another tileserver)
setup and assisting *them* in setting it up at WMF instead of the other way
around which appears to be *far* more laborious?

Quotes like (emphasis added): "The *best* way to scale would be to render the
whole database to vector tiles. The software setup for this is an *unknown* to
me (and I'm guessing most who aren't directly involved), [...]" make me cringe.
 Let's leave optimizing the code to people who actually know it. A *lot* of
hardware can be bought before we need to throw away running code.

All,

Brandon has an update here:
https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/OSM_Tileserver#Extended_State_of_Things_-_2013-11-27

At this point, we're going to re-evaluate our options, and see if we can get
some more eyeballs on the project overall. The scope is much larger than
originally anticipated.

We're going to have a chat immediately after the holidays to chart a new way
forward on the project internally, with a goal of getting a bare-bones setup
that meets the exiting and proposed requirements, and work up from there. This
will probably involve some more scope conversations, as well as some help from
Kai, Tim (and indeed anyone else!) who might be able to assist in us getting
this project to 1.0.

Thanks!

--Ken.

Bug ID: 57728
   Summary: VisualEditor:Pawn (♙)appears inside a Media Caption
while user is typing on the main page
   Product: VisualEditor
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Editing Tools
  Assignee: rm...@wikimedia.org
  Reporter: ryasm...@wikimedia.org
CC: jforres...@wikimedia.org, krinklem...@gmail.com,
rm...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Steps to reproduce:

1.Click on the edit button for a page where you have some images on the right
of the page

2.Type something as the first line
3.Delete the first line by pressing backspace
4.When it deletes the first character of the line ,pressing backspace again
still keeps the cursor in the main page
5.Now type something

Observed Result:
Though the cursor is in the main page,a pawn appears inside the caption of the
image at the right.

A pawn will appear in the main document for the following steps:
5. if after step 4 , user presses backspace again
6.While the image at the right is highlighted press the Right arrow > from the
keyboard
7.When the cursor comes to the main article type something

A Pawn appears in the main document.

+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #5645 +++

Description: The user signature button needs to be disabled when a user is
editing articles in the main section of Wikipedia (i.e. pages that are intended
to be articles). This problem leads to user confusion and an unnecessary user
signature in articles. Further, this will prevent the need for clean up of
articles with Special:Cross-name space page.

See bug 5645 for more info/discussion.

Gerrit change 87649 introduces a new configuration variable
$wgShowSigButtonInContentNamespaces. If the change is merged, WikiEditor should
also listen to that variable.

I think we need to kill ext.wikiEditor.toolbar.hideSig.js (see bug 40972) and
do this some other way - ideally by sending $wgShowSigButtonInContentNamespaces
in mw.config somehow.

I have tested the proposed patch and found no issues. It works great. For
reference, my UA is as follows:

I would support enabling this as soon as possible, of course pending further

Seems like a good idea. I did a few changes which seem to work fine, but my
MediaWiki installation is broken so I can't properly test right now.
I also changed something else (DRY), so it looks better to me.
I don't really like the variable re-use that's going on there. First,
$canonicalUrl is used as a relative URL and later it's re-used as an absolute
URL.

Note, though, that Google recommends the canonical link to be absolute (this is
the case with this change):
https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/139394?hl=en
I think that might also be better when a wiki can be reached from multiple
domain names or both HTTP and HTTPS.

Thanks for the git/gerrit information :) If I have the time I will properly
test and submit a patch.

For these types of bugs, please include method of upload (aka was chunked
upload used, and in particular was the async option used. If you're not sure
just include which program used to upload - UploadWizard, Special:Upload, or
something else).

Sorry, but that's probably going to be too hacky to be accepted. ($wgTitle is
not allowed to be used in new code).

I'm not entirely sure why we're outputting the WebRequest::getRequestUrl as the
canonical url. Maybe it might make sense to change the
OutputPage::getHeadLinksArray method to use $this->getTitle()->getLocalURL();
instead of $this->getRequest()->getRequestURL(). (I haven't looked at the code
very much at all, but intuitively, the canonical link shouldn't have extra junk
from the url anyway)

For reference, you can submit patches to our gerrit
(https://gerrit.wikimedia.org) install. Accounts are free, and available by
signing up at http://wikitech.wikimedia.org. There's detailed instructions at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Gerrit/Tutorial . Alternatively you can upload a
patch via http://tools.wmflabs.org/gerrit-patch-uploader/ without having to go
through all the git set up.

Small hint for anybody trying to reproduce the problem: Adding the URL
parameter
?uselang=xy
to the URL of a wikipage (e.g. on Wikipedia or mediawiki.org) displays the page
in the language with the corresponding language code xy. This could be helpful
in order to get a user interface with long strings (de, fr, pt) or in
right-to-left (RTL) languages (fa, he, ar).

[Bug 57613] Distributed cron replacement

2013-11-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57613

--- Comment #7 from Marc A. Pelletier  ---
(In reply to comment #6)
> Is there really something wrong with gearman
> or jenkins?

The fact that neither of them solves the stated problem set? (Well, I suppose
Jenkins could be coerced into doing something similar by combining its job
monitoring with some manually crafted schedules; but that's sorta like using a
car to crack nuts by driving over them -- it'll /work/ but it's hardly the best
solution). Also, Jenkins is exactly as much a SPOF just running cron is; in
which case it provides no benefit beyond the ability to farm out the actual
run.

I'm not even sure where you see Gearman as even related. It's a fairly nice
distributed RPC-like dispatcher, but still requires a process to schedule and
start jobs which leads us back to the initial problem.

Neither of those provide any help with the stated objective of "make sure X
happens at time T (or interval I)".

Chronos gets close to the stated objective but is (a) highly complex to use and
(b) has several boatloads of heavy external dependencies.

This is not a new problem; and it's still actively discussed. May places have
constructed workarounds[2] and ad-hoc systems to do just that[3]; I'm hoping we
can make a solution that is applicable to the general case.

[Bug 36064] Find a way to mark a report as "needinfo"

2013-11-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36064

--- Comment #19 from Andre Klapper  ---
I had no luck with a local 4.4 instance either, hence I checked for existance
of hooks used (by looking at the filenames in
/extensions/Needinfo/template/en/default/hook/):

$:andre\> cd ./bmo-42upstream
$:andre\> grep -r "after_comment_commit_button" .
./template/en/default/bug/edit.html.tmpl:
   [% Hook.process("after_comment_commit_button", 'bug/edit.html.tmpl') %]
$:andre\> cd ../bugzilla-44upstream/
$:andre\> grep -r "after_comment_commit_button" .
$:andre\>

So that was the issue for this extension.

Adding the line
 [% Hook.process("after_comment_commit_button", 'bug/edit.html.tmpl') %]
in
https://git.wikimedia.org/blob/wikimedia%2Fbugzilla%2Fmodifications.git/fa11f483cd98b49578db9924f576d65fc258a989/template%2Fen%2Fcustom%2Fbug%2Fedit.html.tmpl#L1109
finally made this work as expected.

Bug ID: 57725
   Summary: VisualEditor:Clicking on reference does not bring up

   Product: VisualEditor
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW

  Assignee: rm...@wikimedia.org
  Reporter: ryasm...@wikimedia.org

Steps to reproduce:

1.Click on the edit button for a page where you have a image on the right of
the page which has another image as caption

2.Type something as the first line
3.Delete the first line by pressing backspace
4.When it deletes the first character of the line ,pressing backspace again
still keeps the cursor in the main page
5.Now add a reference to the empty space,which gets added to the caption of the
image at the right.
6.Now type something on the second line and add a reference

Observed Result:

The dialog box for adding reference does not appear anymore.

Currently commands are executed on the surface, and don't fire at all when not
in a surface context (e.g. a dialog), however we want to have target level
shortcuts (save, show menu, show help, etc.) that don't just fire when the
document is fired.

because it will only thanks for the edit on the right side or add a better

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57719

--- Comment #1 from Mark Holmquist  ---
So, this is a notification that the script is taking a really long time to
execute. We may have an infinite loop somewhere in the script.

Is there anything special about the files? Maybe they have more EXIF data than
UW is used to or something.

Have you tried letting the scripts run? It may be that it's caching some
information so it has to run slightly less each time, and on the third or
fourth try it finally gets through. Try letting it complete, i.e. don't kill
the javascript thread, and let me know if that helps.

Created attachment 13928
  --> https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=13928&action=edit
Special page with and without JavaScript

The page [[Special:Notifications]] looks very different with and without
JavaScript. I think it's very easy to avoid at least the most obvious
difference. There is very little CSS missing. Simply move the following styles
from ext.echo.special.css[1] to ext.echo.base.css[2].

.mw-echo-date-section {
font-weight: 800;
font-size: 1.1em;
text-transform: uppercase;
border-bottom: 1px solid #C9C9C9;
margin: 30px 0 5px 50px;
color: #686868;
max-width: 550px;  /* See [3] */
}
ul#mw-echo-special-container {
list-style: none none; /* See [4] */
padding: 0;
margin: 30px 0 0 0;
max-width: 600px;  /* See [5] */
}

I'm sure there are other solutions (there are much more differences, see the
attached screenshot) but this is the most simple solution for the most obvious
problem.

I did not included the :hover effect on purpose because I think it can be
misleading in a non-JavaScript environment.

[2]https://bits.wikimedia.org/static-1.23wmf4/extensions/Echo/modules/base/ext.echo.base.css
[3]Not needed at all because of the other "max-with" below. Please remove this
line.
[4]A single "none" is enough. Please remove one.
[5]I find the current "max-width" to narrow. I think it should be "max-with:
100ex". But this is obviously an other issue.

*Worst* case scenario is that this happens when we move to eqiad (since the

and

to the Commons using the UploadWizard. I think it happened three times, and
this was the last error message:

"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can
stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script:

However, clicking "Continue" each time resulted in the upload completing
successfully. I am using Mozilla Firefox 25.0.1.

Cheers,
Jack

Actually, we can't directly make the url have an extension other than .php due
to security bugs in safari and some version of ie, but that's kind of a
separate problem

In the context of the player we set:

.attr( {
   'href': source.getSrc(),
   'download': fileName
})

Which browser use to trigger a download link with given file name. It would be
a small change to parse the title check for timedText namespace, and re-arrange
things so it has .srt extension.

But just something to keep in mind.

[Bug 52019] Vectorize all project logos

In fact I have just invited Tomasz to become a GCI mentor. For some weird legal
reasons GCI doesn't accept Italian participants... like Nemo. The ideal setup
here would be that Tomasz and Nemo could coordinate the SVG-logos meta-bug. If
Tomasz is a mentor then you would be fully autonomous.

I really believe that GCI students can fix completely all the logos of all the
SVG related bug reports before the end of the program in January, with just a
bit of organization here.

[Bug 52019] Vectorize all project logos

2013-11-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52019

--- Comment #5 from Tomasz W. Kozlowski  ---
* [1] No, projects in the Incubator phase do not need vectorized logos. (They
generally receive them once they exit that phase and become 'regular' projects
with their own domains.)
* [2] Red links to SVG files mean that either (1) there is no SVG equivalent to
an existing PNG logo, (2) there is no local logo at all, or (3) the project
uses a local logo under a name that differs from the accepted naming format.

In each case, the students should visit each project to confirm that they are
using localised logos, and if so, proceed with creation of SVG versions. (It's
a waste of time to create localised logos if communities don't want them.)

New logos should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons using the same naming format
used by other projects in the same family, such as Wikinews-logo-ro.svg,
Wikiquote-logo-lt.svg, etc. (it's all explained at the top of that page).

There is currently no need to submit any Gerrit patches; we can submit multiple
logos in one patch after GCI is finished, and at least some communities would
need to be consulted before we do that anyway.

[Bug 57612] Update Browser testing/setup instructions page

2013-11-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57612

David Wood  changed:

   What|Removed |Added

 CC||einyxdot...@gmail.com

--- Comment #2 from David Wood  ---
Hi, my claim has just been accepted for this task, I've been working to test if
the 'Setup virtual machine' section works. So far I've discovered that:

VirtualBox 4.3.2 has a error on Windows that messes up with private networks,
and vagrant doesn't work with it, therefore it is required to downgrade to
VirtualBox 4.2.18

Secondly, I've ran into issues when doing 'vagrent up' that causes this error
to occur:

"[default] Waiting for machine to boot. This may take a few minutes...
The guest machine entered an invalid state while waiting for it
to boot. Valid states are 'starting, running'. The machine is in the
'poweroff' state. Please verify everything is configured
properly and try again.

If the provider you're using has a GUI that comes with it,
it is often helpful to open that and watch the machine, since the
GUI often has more helpful error messages than Vagrant can retrieve.
For example, if you're using VirtualBox, run `vagrant up` while the
VirtualBox GUI is open."

I'm not entirely sure how to fix this error, some quick searches came up with
changing a setting in the vm on VirtualBox (Settings > System > Processor >
Enable PAE/NX) which didn't work. I've also tried booting into BIOS to check
that Virtualization is enabled, it was and therefore this also didn't work.
I've also tried running the vm from VirtualBox to no avail.

I'll update here if I manage to solve this and get it running, then I'll move
on to testing the Ruby section on Windows 8.1 (this is the only OS I'm running
currently) and then I'll update the wiki article.

If you have any ideas on how to solve the issue stated above, it'd be much
appreciated, David.

[Bug 45036] Update favicons to provide high res variant (tracking)

2013-11-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45036

--- Comment #11 from Tomasz W. Kozlowski  ---
Essentially, all the icons mentioned in comment 4 that do not have the [X] sign
next to them need to be recreated, with three layers (16x16, 32x32 and 48x48
pixels) each, just like .

Comment 7 provides some general information on why some more complicated logos
need pixel-level adjustment or sharpening.

After the logos are re-created, they need to be submitted into the
mediawiki-config repo (mediawiki-config/docroot/bits/favicon, to be exact)
through Gerrit.
