Searching for pages -- in any namespace -- on the Simple English Wiktionary
brings up titles from the English Wiktionary, regardless of whether they exist
locally.

This happens in both the drop-down list of suggested titles *and* the separate
results page.

I have uploaded to Commons some screen captures of an example:

The following is a screen capture of the search results for "cursor" on
simple.wiktionary

None of the items in the drop-down list exist on simple.wiktionary
Highlighted in red is the entry for "hover", which contains the word "cursor"
in a definition about computing. It states that the page was last changed on
14:37, 9 December 2013.

The local entry for "hover" has never contained the word "cursor". It doesn't
correspond with anything that was in the search results, and the latest
revision was made on 21 November 2012.

I've highlighted the definition that appears in the results and the timestamp.

Default "permission error"/"not logged in" pages are very unhelpful, and even
scary (especially for permission error). When you reach this page just because
you are unregistered, the message does not even direct you to sign in or create
an account, it just tells you you are not allowed to access the page because
"The action you have requested is limited to users in the group: Users." (Which
is awful wiki jargon.)

Ideally, such error messages should include the login menu (from
Special:UserLogin) directly in the message, so you can log in or create a new
account without leaving the page. This, of course, only applies to permission
errors where the only permission needed is being a registered user.

This doesn't seem to be supported natively in browsers. Even the XHR2 standard
doesn't include support for this. Presumably this is because POST bodies large
enough that compression is desired are rare, and because clients don't know in
advance whether the server will support compression.

We may be able to do this using a client-side gzip implementation; I'll have to
see whether that makes sense. Alternatively, it might be that the savings from
fixing bug 59660 and dropping data-parsoid will suffice.

This seems like a bug in MediaWiki's import system. 

Ideally, you would be warned when importing a page with the wrong content type.
You would get an option to either proceed with the import (implicitly
converting the content type perhaps? this may be needed if the source wiki is
misconfigured?), or else to enter a new destination title for the page with the
wrong content type, so it gets imported to a place where it is allowed.

I'm a bit sceptical about the added value of such a huge list of suggest items.
In fact I'd be inclined to remove the current list. Composer is being used to
install extensions into MediaWiki. Not to install MediaWiki. The installer
seems a much better place to provide such suggestions. Also consider that the
composer.json file is like LocalSettings.php not in git. I think it makes sense
to not put in things there just because we can, and rather keep it
minimalistic.

For example Site CSS and JS was disabled for a security related reason.

The rest mostly because there's really no reason for 99.999% of users to
know it even exists, never mind actually visit or try and use it for anything.

There's nothing that can/should be doing at the wiki. It serves exists mostly
for technical reasons. If we had allowed editing, we'd would've had a spam of
people creating their userpages, personal JS and CSS etc.

In my preferences the language is set to English (which I absolutely don't
mind, I'd use English anyway!), whoever the drop-down menu to change that is at
least for me locked on that page. No idea what other ways there might be to
change that, also that does not really matter to me.

So what is the reason why people can not be allowed to change their settings?
Why is it set to vector and not to one of the other possibilities?

I really see no reason why users there, especially those who use that project
shouldn't be allowed to decide themselves which language they want to see, or
which skin they want to use. There is no reason to restrict that to some
randomly chosen setting.

Also, no, I've no "bigger issues". I could also ask why the setting isn't set
to Chinese as language and to cologne blue as skin setting. If there is no
serious reason to patronize users by taking them the choice, then they should
be given the choice to decide what language or skin we want to use.

Okay. Let's take a step back here: why can't users set preferences on
login.wikimedia.org?

In my opinion, the onus is on the person wanting to restrict a common user
behavior (setting pre-user preferences). That is, _you_ need a reason to
restrict a user from setting preferences rather than trying to require that
_others_ find a reason to be able to set per-user preferences.

h = p.getVersionHistory(getAll=True) returns the full history.

h = p.fullVersionHistory(getAll=True) returns 192 entries (now more ...).
Reason is that result might not be 'revCount' long also when 'query-continue'
is returned, due to:
{u'result':{u'*': u'This result was truncated because it would otherwise be
larger than the limit of 12582912 bytes'}}

So it is not enough to check only that len() < revCount to declare that
thisHistoryDone = True.
