Cool! and of course you have evidence that people just do this, intuitively.

rel=canonical is not a solution. Google Bot (and other search engines) still
will download these pages, and he has limit for pages to download. So, if he
download similar pages with different url, he not download other IMPORTANT
pages and they not will be indexed faster.

It's not really possible to fix this on our side without introducing a really,
really ugly hack that re-constructs the removed section of the DOM. ULS removed
a vital part of the DOM (thanks Hoo for finding out!).

  (otherlanguages)

  (wikibase-editlinks)

The "after-portlet" part is a bit newer than the ULS code, see Gerrit
I099fb2ff48e02a2e3564a484aea906263e40bb53. Which may be the reason why this
broke. Our JavaScript replaces the "edit" link with the "add" widget. Which
really is how it should be. Simply adding the link to the remaining "p-lang" as
a workaround doesn't work. The CSS would be wrong.

I tried to add a connected link to a random item. Then this message is usually
shown but there are no links, only wikitext. See the attachment.

It is interesting that [[d:MediaWiki:Wikibase-error-sitelink-already-used]] has
a quite different content. Maybe the connection between the page and the
message has been broken.

I don't know whether this could be duplicated with bug 47949...

[Bug 66041] New: Use appropriate language for SVG file hosted on Commons and transcluded on local Wikimedia project

There some SVG files localised using the switch element. In order to use the
appropriate language version of this file on local wiki, you need to add
lang=XX to the file inclusion entry. As for me, it makes sense to use the
corresponding language version of SVG file without need of adding extra switch
lang. For example, the SVG file hosted on Commons and transcluded in Ukrainian
Wikipedia, should be shown in Ukrainian automatically as it is done with
templates on Commons file description pages.

Does it make sense?

Ideally we'd have some way to automatically dump settings that appear in the
interface elsewhere into main preferences just by telling it 'OY LOOK A
SETTING'.

May also want a separate page of 'all settings' or 'advanced settings' for a
lot of them (it could also appear collapsed or something by default - the point
is while this is often not the stuff folks will necessarily be after, it should
be there somewhere in case they are), sort of like the extra 'config' heap you
see in firefox and whatnot, but hopefully somewhat easier to find and use.

[Bug 52817] Handle "Search" --> "Advanced options" section of Special:Preferences on Special:Search itself

2014-06-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52817

--- Comment #26 from Amgine  ---
@Isarra

So you are saying "both-and", not "eliminate one"? This would probably result
in duplication of code and maintenance (which is one of my arguments against
moving the preferences in the first place.)

The suggested model is not as simple as Scott Martin describes it. Although
setting the preference is top menu -> special: preferences -> tab, this is
simpler than tools menu -> special:specialpages -> search -> settings because
search is not readily found in the special:specialpages page. Yes, *if one has
already done a search* you are already on the page, but if you have not, you
aren't. I just attempted to land on search from the search box: foo, qux, and
quux are redirs, foobar is an article, baz and asdf are disambigs, and foobaz
gets me to search.

[Bug 64916] backport python-six 1.4.1 +

--- Comment #2 from Antoine "hashar" Musso ---
During the Zurich Hackathon in May 2014 Alexandros looked at hosts having
python-six installed:

{'copper.eqiad.wmnet': 'YES'}
{'labnet1001.eqiad.wmnet': 'YES'}
{'osmium.eqiad.wmnet': 'YES'}
{'tantalum.eqiad.wmnet': 'YES'}
{'virt1000.wikimedia.org': 'YES'}
{'virt1001.eqiad.wmnet': 'YES'}
{'virt1002.eqiad.wmnet': 'YES'}
{'virt1003.eqiad.wmnet': 'YES'}
{'virt1004.eqiad.wmnet': 'YES'}
{'virt1005.eqiad.wmnet': 'YES'}
{'virt1006.eqiad.wmnet': 'YES'}
{'virt1007.eqiad.wmnet': 'YES'}

Because python-six is a depends of OpenStack bricks:

$ apt-cache rdepends python-six
python-six
Reverse Depends:
  python-neutronclient
  python-nova
  python-wsme
  python-warlock
  python-urllib3
  python-pecan
  python-oslo.config
  python-novaclient
  python-nova
  python-neutronclient
  python-neutron
  python-keystoneclient
  python-heat
  python-glance
  python-cinderclient
  python-cinder
  python-ceilometer

So upgrading python-six would impact labs / OpenStack infrastructure and I have
no clue of the impact of such an upgrade.

CCing ops: Alexandros, Marc-Andre and Andrew B.

The bug does exist.

Only 1.15 and earlier would store user preferences in the user_options column.
It was 1.16 in which the user_properties table was added; when
User::saveSettings() is called in 1.16 - 1.18, user_options is set to the empty
string.

The convertUserOptions.php script has a "user_options != ''" condition in the
SELECT statement. So no rows would be returned, and the script would not have
called User::saveSettings() in your case.

The update script works for me both in current REL1_23 and with PleaseStand's

* checked out REL1_17
* installed MW
* Modified some user settings
* switched to REL1_23
* ran update.php
It worked in both cases. There was no user_password_expires before, and now
there is.

To reproduce:
1. Edit an article in the Hebrew Wikipedia.
2. Click Insert (הוספה) -> Reference (הערת שוליים).
Observed: The "Cite" item in the toolbar is in English.
There seems to be a message for it - visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label, and it
was translated to Hebrew on May 12 and exported to the code, but it doesn't
appear.

Hi.

I upgraded an instance to SF 2.7 and parameters no longer seem to be passed in
via the query string.

I then tried the voting example as in the SF documentation to check and it also
has stopped working

{{#autoedit:form=Flavor|target=Vanilla|link text=Vote for Vanilla|query
string=Flavor[Num votes]={{#expr:{{#show:Vanilla|?Has number of votes}} +
1}}|summary=Adding vote {{#expr:{{#show:Vanilla|?Has number of votes}} + 1}}.
}}

The Has number of votes value does not increment.

MW version is 1.22.7

Not sure whether it's good to add bug 50454 to "see also" and/or reopen it, but
this Lua (for AbuseFilter) needs to include a regex library (see ngx.re in the
nginx version of Lua), or it will be impossible to migrate current filters.

[Bug 52817] Handle "Search" --> "Advanced options" section of Special:Preferences on Special:Search itself

2014-06-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52817

--- Comment #25 from Isarra  ---
I guess there are two things here.

1: Users will primarily care about preferences affecting a specific page when
on that specific page. They will be able to most effectively see the effects
when on that page, too, so giving them the option to save what works when
they're there, seeing that it works, is generally quite useful.

2: Users do tend to expect to find preferences in preferences. A common
practice, especially for users who have used the software before but are on a
new project, is to go through all of them and quickly configure things how they
like them, or think they will. Alternately, if they want to go back and disable
something after it behaves weirdly, or if another user tells them to change a
setting, the preferences are a likely place to go for that.

Yes.

To reproduce:
1. Edit an article in the Hebrew Wikipedia.
2. Click Insert (הוספה) -> Reference (הערת שוליים).
Observe: The contenteditable div for writing the footnote text is forced to
dir="ltr".
Expected: It must be in the direction of the wiki - dir="rtl", or simply
without the dir, and inherit the direction.

[Bug 52817] Handle "Search" --> "Advanced options" section of Special:Preferences on Special:Search itself

2014-06-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52817

--- Comment #24 from Scott Martin  ---
I don't understand how clicking into Special:Preferences and then a subpage to
set options for Special:SomePage is substantially less complicated than going
to Special:SomePage and setting them there the first time you use it. Given
that most changes to search options will be made on the fly during search
experiences, requiring users to leave the special page, go into preferences and
then come back (or change preferences in a new tab then reload the search) is a
degradation of the UX.

> Preferences are preferences, please keep them together not scattered around
> the wiki.

"The wiki" is a misunderstanding here. "Preferences" are operational modes for
programs, and the special pages are a collection of small utility programs
accompanying the core. There's no objective reason why their mode controls
should be grouped together remotely with the core's. It's like having the
windscreen wiper speed control as a switch on the engine instead of on the
dashboard; old-school advanced users of that peculiarly-designed car may be
fine with opening the hood to change it because "it's always been there", but
that doesn't make doing it easy for everyone. A new car would seem particularly
old-fashioned if it were still designed this way, and we should be trying to
ensure that MediaWiki lives up to the interface design expectations of modern
software.

> Please produce the evidence base for this change.

Pretty much every UX study ever that's shown that the further away you put a
control from what it affects, the harder users find it to interact with, or
even find in the first place - especially new users. It's the GUI-side version
of [[Action at a distance (computer programming)]].

S (speaking only for myself, I'm not a MediaWiki developer)

Chris the speller has posted on mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Search about hyphens
being ignored. Also, I have seen many cases where some hiccup caused
CirrusSearch to miss an update; these apparently will never get fixed, whereas
the current updater for lsearchd will provide a completely updated index
whenever it runs to completion, even if that is not every day, as it should be.

Sorry for the late reply. I hoped to set a MediaWiki instance suitable for
testing and then time lapsed with nothing done.

At the moment I still can't do proper testing. But -- as I can see -- the fix
is already online and well working.

Checked with Firefox_29 and Chrome_35, both with source tags and pages based on
ContentModel, also both in "MediaWiki 1.24wmf6" (it.wikipedia.org) and
"MediaWiki 1.24wmf7" (www.mediawiki.org).

[Bug 52817] Handle "Search" --> "Advanced options" section of Special:Preferences on Special:Search itself

2014-06-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52817

--- Comment #23 from billinghurst  ---
Clutter is removing unnecessary items, redundant items, messy items; clutter is
not (re)moving a useful and considered page. So since when is a preference page
like Search preference considered clutter? It is clear and specific.
Preferences are preferences, please keep them together not scattered around the
wiki.

My attitude is not about any other item, please don't presume.

When I am setting up my preferences for a wiki it is very easy to go into
preferences and change the settings that I want. Now you are going to make
someone go to the search page to do it, off via other links. That is not more
helpful.

If the issue that we give (too) much choice to users, and they are confronted
about tabs, then produce a simple and an advanced choice plan. Please produce
the evidence base for this change.

To the "maybe I missed ...". Have you missed the meaning of the word
"consultation" and maybe seeking a broader opinion?

That it is considered that bugzilla is a suitable place for working out a
social solution is less than ideal, and yet it happens repeatedly. That a few
didn't think it is worthwhile consulting with the broader community about this
is disappointing.

The DNs aren't actually the same (note how they live in two different
projects), and those OU aren't actually used anymore either. The status in
LDAP is unrelated.

The reason why the tool was still visible on the status page is because that is
checked against the tool's *home* being there (so that data doesn't vanish).
Since it had to actual contents, I've deleted it which removed it from the
listing as well.

[Bug 66011] Search index not updating on en.wikipedia

--- Comment #3 from Nik Everett  ---
(In reply to SpontaneousGrumbler from comment #2)
> So, you are saying that we will not update the production search index until
> CirrusSearch goes into production? CirrusSearch is not ready for prime time.

Its not a cut and dry as that. The production search index is updating but
slowly and so far as I can tell spotily. We're not going to fix it because
every time we try it causes more problems. We don't have the expertise to even
deploy an update any more much less trace down what's going on in this case.

So we focus on Cirrus because the hard bit (Elasticsearch) has significantly
more folks using it so the knowledge gap isn't so bad. Also the documentation
is better.

As far as Cirrus not being read for prime time, are you referring to any
particular feature shortcoming or "just" the performance aspect? I'd love to
know so I can, well, fix it.

[Bug 52817] Handle "Search" --> "Advanced options" section of Special:Preferences on Special:Search itself

I'm sorry you see it that way; I suspect your attitude about this bug is
affected by an unrelated change which got merged and reverted in these days
after a MediaWiki RfC with a very obscure title. This is nothing like that.

Maybe you missed something:
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/showdependencygraph.cgi?id=62559&display=tree&rankdir=LR
If you did it's not your fault, implementation details discussed in each bug
(like this) are just that, details; but it's safe to state that since some time
ago there is wide consensus, and a strong push, towards reducing the clutter in
MediaWiki by reducing interface complexity in general and Special:Preferences
options specifically.

[Bug 66032] New: AbuseFilter should allow storing regex matches into variables

2014-06-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66032

Bug ID: 66032
   Summary: AbuseFilter should allow storing regex matches into
variables
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: AbuseFilter
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: huji.h...@gmail.com
CC: agarr...@wikimedia.org, nischay...@gmail.com
   Web browser: ---
   Mobile Platform: ---

The motivation for this request is the following task:

A user creates a named reference (e.g. ...) and
uses it throughout a page (e.g. ...). Later, another
user edits the page, and removes the first definition of that named reference.
This causes all subsequent uses to return an error.

The idea is to create an abuse filter that can (a) detect when a named
reference is removed, (b) detect that value of the "name" parameter of that
reference, and (c) check to see if any other reference tags using the same name
parameter exist throughout the page.

Parts a and c are very easy. Part b is only possible if you can store the
output of a regular expression match into a variable. Currently, the only regex
function allowed by AbuseFilter is rcount, which doesn't serve this purpose.
