If you go to the list of parser extension tags on the Hebrew Wikipedia, you'll
see one tag whose name appears in jumbled mojibake instead of Unicode. This is
probably the localized Hebrew version of from
LabeledSectionTransclusion.

I cannot reproduce it on my local wiki.

I propose we remove the post-login icon for now, and when wikifont is in core
we can add the updated icon then. We have personal bar instrumented right now,
so we'll be able to see if there is any dropoff from users based on the removed
icon.

I think this is the right way to go for login.

Not sure about removing the icon for once you're logged in. It does provide
value, in that it denotes that the menu items are related to you personally. I
think if we try something simpler (the version May did pushed things a bit in
terms of personality and verve) then we can easily replace it. Munaf is working
on something in conjunction with our designs for a task suggestions alpha.

The original symptoms appeared very close (not just "it's something with timers

I didn't dive deeper to figure out the underlying interactions until later.

On initial provision (`vagrant up`) of a clean virtual machine, installation of
mw-core dependencies via composer fails:

Error: Working directory '/vagrant/mediawiki' does not exist
Error: /Stage[main]/Mediawiki/Exec[install composer deps]/returns: change from
notrun to 0 failed: Working directory '/vagrant/mediawiki' does not exist

Fairly obviously Exec[install composer deps] is missing a necessary require on
Git::Clone['mediawiki/core'].

Current icon, when seen logged out

user-icon.svg (with png fallback) is a subtle but highly visible part of
Vector. It displays to all users, either next to the login link or next to
their username. Consequently, this is an important piece of MediaWiki
iconography.

This icon is pretty bad right now, in a variety of ways:

- It has too much detail.
- It looks male. It's a bald person wearing blue suit.
- It looks Caucasian.

I don't think we want a little white man representing what being a user on a
wiki is. Additionally, it's glossy, round look is too much for such a small
icon. Even icon suites like those of GNOME (not exactly known for flat, trendy
UI) are simpler than this.

The ideal user icon should be:

- Genderless
- Neutral in color
- Simple and easy to discern even at very small sizes

This is https://wikimedia.mingle.thoughtworks.com/projects/multimedia/cards/736

We try to make copying the message very easy, which means the text gets focused
and preselected automatically from time to time (e.g. when switching tabs). If
it would capture keystrokes on top of that, that would result in a very
confusing behavior (prev/next would basically stop working when you open the
panel).

Opened bug 67835 about the underlying issue though, which is that it should be
possible to just read these texts without copying them.

[Bug 67835] New: It should be possible to read boilerplate texts without copypasting them into another applicationaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

2014-07-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=67835

Bug ID: 67835
Summary: It should be possible to read boilerplate texts

applicationaaa
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified

OS: All
Status: NEW

MediaViewer provides a bunch of boilerplate texts in its share/download/embed
panels. It is currently impossible to read this texts without copying them into
another application (such as a text editor): the textboxes are very small and
only show the first few characters, and they get automatically refocused and
keypresses are captured by other handlers and used for global behavior (such as
prev/next), so really to only way to scroll the text is having a touchpad. This
is annoying for the experienced user, and makes it harder for the inexperienced
one to understand the purpose of the text.

While most of these design decisions were taken in order to maximize the ease
of copying the text, and that is a worthwhile goal, there should be a way to
just read the text. Maybe the textbox could expand when selected...

[Bug 67834] New: jenkins - operations-puppet-puppetlint-strict - checks outdated files

in operations/puppet i noticed on:

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/145472/

-->

https://integration.wikimedia.org/ci/job/operations-puppet-puppetlint-strict/4456/console

that jenkins still says all these things about admins.pp, like:

03:42:51 ./manifests/admins.pp:1361 WARNING line has more than 80 characters
(80chars)
03:42:51 ./manifests/admins.pp:1371 WARNING line has more than 80 characters
(80chars)
03:42:51 ./manifests/admins.pp:1376 WARNING line has more than 80 characters
(80chars)

but if you clone the repo and pull, you will see that admins.pp is already
empty and doesn't have all these lines anymore, we replaced it with admin yaml

so i guess the file can't be up2date where jenkins checks it, but i have
created this patch just today...

Sorry. I meant if you push on it with your finger.

But something has changed now I see anyway. It used to be that there would
appear a dotted red line above the word and you could push on it with your
finger and a pop up window would come - just like the one that comes on a
regular PC computer with a mouse. Now it doesn't anymore

[Bug 59680] SubProperty mechanism

2014-07-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59680

I think it would help to have this request reviewed by someone with detailed
knowledge of the RDFS and OWL W3C specifications. Markus Krötzsch might be
willing.

I am concerned about Example C from the original request. It sets making
subproperties of P31 (instance of) a motivation for this property. P31 has the
semantics of rdf:type per community consensus. It is also in the RDF export as
such: see wikidata-instances.nt.gz in
http://tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-exports/rdf/exports/20140526/. That export
uses OWL. Of the OWL varieties, OWL 2 DL tends to be preferred.

However, according to the OWL 2 Structural Specification, section 5.3, "IRIs
from the reserved vocabulary other than owl:topObjectProperty and
owl:bottomObjectProperty MUST NOT be used to identify object properties in an
OWL 2 DL ontology." [1] The specification goes on to explain that IRIs
prefixed with rdf and rdfs, e.g. rdf:type and rdfs:subClassOf, are among the
reserved vocabulary. A 2007 paper by Boris Motik, an editor of OWL 2, explains
why making statements about the built-in vocabulary is such a problem.

Simply put, statements like "x rdfs:subPropertyOf rdf:type" and "y
rdfs:subPropertyOf rdfs:subClassOf" would not be valid in OWL 2 DL, the
preferred W3C language for Semantic Web ontologies.

Subproperties would be very useful, but enabling non-standard semantics would
outweigh that benefit.

[Bug 67826] Disable Media Viewer by default on the English Wikipedia

> even if you are still unhappy with the result.

Erik, my level of satisfaction is irrelevant. As I expressed in the Commons
RfC, "I Don't Like It"-style votes are not valuable, and should not be counted
in evaluating consensus.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Requests_for_comment/Media_Viewer_software_feature&diff=128325247&oldid=128324966

It seems that you and the Multimedia Team, though, don't take the same view on
the other side. You seem to attach great importance to the fact that you
reached out to some Wikipedians, and they responded "I Like It."

The "NOTCONSENT" policy cited makes it clear that WMF must act on its own
discretion on legal matters, and I have no quarrel with that. Certainly there
are cases where consensus has no place. But this is not one of them. On matters
that involve sophisticated judgment -- is it your position that WMF is capable
of evaluating what constitutes good judgment, and local communities are not?

It seems that you are quick to cite your community engagement practices when
doing so serves your objective of deploying the software, but quick to dismiss
community input that do not support that objective.

Also, this really should've been a separate bug. The bug as reported was fixed
and affected core. This looks similar (it's something with timers and
animations), but a different exception is thrown, different unit tests are
failing, and it's only affecting extensions (doesn't mean the bug isn;t in
core, but it's a separate bug).

This isn't a "something is wrong with qunit and timers" tracking bug.

I have to admit that I didn't like MediaViewer at first, but I read Erik's
comments, and decided to give it another try. And it's definitely improving.
It's now at the quality level of an early beta release, rather than the alpha
release level it was at when it was first implemented.

The fullscreen button was surprising at first, but I can see the use of it.
But after that, it only took me 2 minutes to find two bugs. MV tells users that
they have to attribute CC0 and PD images (they don't). I wanted to see the
message that was in the public domain attribution message, so I clicked in the
message field, and pressed the right arrow to see the end of the selection --
oops! Next image.

I'm not a person with highly established workflows -- my contributions to
English Wikipedia are around one edit per month, and I use other wiki software.
Media Viewer is just confusing, and feels incomplete. It's not my workflow
breaking, it's a new feature's interface being confusing.

I'm really disappointed that the WMF seems to want to force this on the
community, when it's so clearly a product still in need of development. And
I'm more disappointed that the only response to the community has been based on
Silent Majority arguments and a disdain for experienced members of the
community.

If this bug is marked WONTFIX, where can I file a bug about the WMF?

Pete: Not at all. We've paid close attention to the requests by readers and
editors throughout the development process. In fact, there are aspects of Media
Viewer (like the prominent Commons links) which I believe can be directly
traced to your own early feedback, even if you are still unhappy with the
result.

Recent significant changes include an off switch for readers, and an easy
click-through link to the full resolution version. I think you will also
appreciate the attribution hints recently added to the download tab (see here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Lightbox_demo#mediaviewer/File:Swallow_flying_drinking.jpg
). Some of these changes were made _while_ the RFC took place.

We'll continue to improve Media Viewer, but we'll also focus more attention in
coming weeks on the upload process and on structured data support in
partnership with Wikidata (the latter should help ensure that we can more
consistently pull useful metadata into applications like Media Viewer, and
potentially add some basic edit functionality to the overlay as well).

I see good reason to get Open ID installed on the cluster. The use cases
requested above seem reasonable and valuable.

A future OIDC project would take an unclear amount of time, and might not have
much marginal benefit (in the mid term) over Open ID.

Erik, the RfC is full of critiques of the methodology that led the WMF team
responsible for this feature to the conclusion that it serves the reader
better. Through this action you seem to be saying that the WMF team is correct
by virtue of its being the WMF team, and the English Wikipedia community is
wrong by virtue of its being the English Wikipedia community.

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50911

Lydia, I agree with Steven Rawson. This issue does not seem like a duplicate
of 59680.

All subproperties are transitive, but not all transitive properties are
subproperties. This ticket seems to be a prerequisite for the ticket it was
closed as a duplicate of. That is, I think issue 59680 should be marked as
depending on this one.

This ticket was also created several months earlier. If there is an issue that
should be resolved as a duplicate, I'd think it would be the one that describes
the more narrow case and was filed after the original.

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=67826

Steinsplitter:

It's longstanding WMF policy and practice to apply judgment to community RFCs
and requests regarding software and configuration changes on a case-by-case
basis, depending on the nature of the requested change, the level of
participation, the impact on readers/editors, etc. See:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Limits_to_configuration_changes

In this case, we will keep the feature enabled by default (it's easy to turn
off, both for readers and editors), but we'll continue to improve it based on
community feedback (as has already happened in the last few weeks).

I see no reason in honoring this request. MediaViewer only displays media in a
different way, *and* it can be disabled in your preferences. This is normal
software evolution.

It is nothing like VisualEditor, which was disruptive for all editors. This is
not, and editor consensus cannot dicatate how all *readers* should experience
the use of media.

Changing default user preferences means overriding the choices of registered
editors who actually want the feature (including thousands of editors who
voluntarily opted-in before MediaViewer was made avaialble by default).

It's too bad that MediaWiki doesn't have a good one-click system for changing
prefs, like a "Click here to enable X" button or pop-up. It'd be so much
easier than telling hundreds of users "Go to Special:Preferences, click to this
tab, scroll halfway down, find this item, tick the box, scroll all the way
down, save the page."

Expanded 1-liner

When user expands a topic that's in the most collapsed 1-liner mode, the topic
title box should look like a normal expanded version with no speech bubble box
with number in them and including all other info that's in an expanded version.
