I am often confused by the behaviour of the link dialogue and am often looking for the insert or confirm button. Done doesn't seem right to me somehow. On the other hand, James is right too. The behaviour of all the formatting icons on the toolbar is that as soon you press them, the action takes place. So, highlighting a word and pressing bold will cause the text to go bold immediately, not after a second 'confirmation click'. However in this specific case I don't think it matters, PHP preserves the backslash if the following character does not match a valid escape sequence. All the variables mentioned in comment 0 are passed to wfEscapeShellArg, which should wrap them in double quotes. Can you enable debug logging ([[mw:Manual:How_to_debug]]) and look for a line starting with either doTransform or retrieveMetaData (without the quotes)? The reason for using the XMP naming schema is that the data extracted from the
templates is merged with the XMP data from the file. That way, if the file page
does not have an {{Information}} template but the file has a Credit EXIF field,
it can be displayed as the author.
In hindsight, that was not a good way of doing things - the XMP vocabulary is
not so great and translating it to the names used by [[commons:COM:MRD]] would
have been better.
The extmetadata API might soon be superseded by the structured data API though
(I am hoping to put up an RFC about that this week); I am not sure it is worth
breaking BC on an API that is going to be deprecated any minute.

Important to note that the first enwiki 5.5.36 slave, from which others were
cloned, did have data dumped and reloaded rather than being upgraded in place,
so categorylinks was definitely recreated. Possibly something has changed with
how the first UNIQUE index can be chosen as primary key, and the 6-byte rowid
is in use instead?
Simply rebuilding the table has no effect:
ALTER TABLE categorylinks ENGINE=InnoDB;
But making the primary key explicit restores the expected behavior:
ALTER TABLE categorylinks DROP INDEX cl_from, ADD PRIMARY KEY (cl_from, cl_to);
Need to investigate what caused the change in behavior, and whether this
affects any other mediawiki tables.
