If a wiki really wants this, it should be done in an extension. For one thing,
it's not unheard of for a sysop to legitimately block another sysop, but this
would unconditionally prevent that, if the configuration mentioned in the
description were implemented. Also, we currently don't have anything even
remotely related to hierarchies like this in the core, and I don't think it
would be good to start.

I have some doubt that "wheel wars where admins keep blocking and unblocking
each other" really occurs often enough to be worth the added complexity of
having this configuration option and having to decide what goes in it for each
group. Let them play around until 'crats can desysop them both.

Keep in mind that in practice these lists are going to be more along the lines
of "array( 'bot', 'reviewer', 'autoreview', 'accountcreator', 'import',
'transwiki', 'ipblock-exempt', 'oversight', 'founder', 'rollbacker',
'autoreviewer', 'researcher', 'filemover', 'checkuser', 'templateeditor',
'massmessage-sender', 'OTRS-member', 'abusefilter', 'epcoordinator',
'eponline', 'epcampus', 'epinstructor', 'oauthadmin', 'confirmed' )" than
"array( 'bot' )" and would have to be updated every time a new group gets
added.

[Bug 71996] Find a way to make global item ids

2014-10-16 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=71996

--- Comment #3 from Jeroen De Dauw ---
> using different prefixes (Q => Wikidata, C => Commons, Z => Wikiquote)

Nope, not going back to configurable prefixes :) Guess you where not involved
yet at the point where they caused to much pain. It has some further drawbacks
that you did not list:

- Not globally unique (can have more Wikibase Repo instances than there are
letters)
- Item IDs are no longer easily recognizable as such (similar to: if it's 35
characters and starts with a "1", then I can guess it's a BTC address)
- The prefixes will be rather obscure. If I see "Z123", how would I derive
"Wikiquote"?

We do of course not need truely global IDs everywhere. And we have plently of
locations where changing the current IDs would be a huge pain. As well as
needing BC for certain things for forever. Which I hope is enough to establish
that changing the existing IDs we have and forcing the change to happen
everywhere is a bad idea. Rather than making such a modification, we need to
add new support for global IDs, and switch to using that where appropriate.
Which still leaves the question of what the global IDs should look like.

> using full urls for item ids (www.wikidata.org/entity/Q123)

If you need IDs global to something more than your own Wikibase Repository
installation, then I think it makes little sense to just go part of the way and
not make it globally unique altogether. So I much preffer this approach over
wikidata:Q123. That is also what WDTK already does if I'm not mistaken. Using
the half-way approach in public interfaces seems especially bad. I can imagine
that it might be slightly better in some specific internal cases, which however
does not make it generally suitable.

[Bug 68054] Gerrit: Use GitHub redirects instead of duplicate mirrors

Krinkle  changed:

Summary|Gerrit: Remove duplicate|Gerrit: Use GitHub
   |mirrors on GitHub |redirects instead of
   ||duplicate mirrors

--- Comment #3 from Krinkle  ---
The redirects GitHub has in place apply both to the HTTP protocol (web
interface) as well as the Git interface itself. We can simply remove the
duplicate "pretty name" replications and perform the renames on GitHub. That
way there's only one repo Gerrit is pushing two and both urls work.

I've gone ahead and done this with mediawiki-core as example.

From Gerrit's perspective it's a straight up replication from
gerrit:mediawiki/core to github:mediawiki-core. There is no fancy-name
duplicate set up for it.

On GitHub it has been renamed from mediawiki-core with a full redirect in
place. Gerrit is now effectively pushing to
https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki while all urls and logs for
mediawiki-core continue to work as expected.

Some posts have a problem with the "Edited timestamp" rollover. If we
mouseover them, they show the text:

I /think/ this is confined to Topics that are loaded in the second batch (after
scrolling). I.e. Topics 1-10 are fine, but 11+ will display the problem.

[Bug 72168] New: VisualEditor: Category sort keys cannot be added

2014-10-16 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72168

Bug ID: 72168
   Summary: VisualEditor: Category sort keys cannot be added
   Product: VisualEditor
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Editing Tools
  Assignee: jforrester+veteambztick...@wikimedia.org
  Reporter: wmf.whatamido...@yahoo.com
CC: elitr...@gmail.com, etonkovid...@wikimedia.org,
jforres...@wikimedia.org, rm...@wikimedia.org,
ryasm...@wikimedia.org, tpars...@wikimedia.org
   Web browser: ---
   Mobile Platform: ---

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open a page and go to Page options > Categories.

2. (Add a category if none exist.) Edit a category to add a sort key.

3.  Save page.

4. Check diff: no sort key was added. :-(

Confirmed in Firefox 32 and Safari 6.2 on Macs and Windows, so it's probably
happening everywhere.

This doesn't seem to be bug 48555.

[Bug 72167] New: logging table appears to have different indexes from what vanilla MW does (e.g no type_action index)

2014-10-16 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72167

Bug ID: 72167
   Summary: logging table appears to have different indexes from
what vanilla MW does (e.g no type_action index)
   Product: Wikimedia Labs
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: tools
  Assignee: m...@uberbox.org
  Reporter: bawolff...@gmail.com
CC: benap...@gmail.com, t...@tim-landscheidt.de
   Web browser: ---
   Mobile Platform: ---

I was looking at https://tools.wmflabs.org/tools-info/optimizer.py It appears
the logging table is missing 3 indexes that are specified by vanilla MediaWiki.
Specifically:

CREATE INDEX /*i*/type_action ON /*_*/logging (log_type, log_action,
log_timestamp);
CREATE INDEX /*i*/log_user_text_type_time ON /*_*/logging (log_user_text,
log_type, log_timestamp);
CREATE INDEX /*i*/log_user_text_time ON /*_*/logging (log_user_text,
log_timestamp);

The one in particular I wish was there right now, is the type_action index.

Additionally, it lacks the log_search table, which in MediaWiki is used to
locate log entries sometimes. (Mostly for oversight, but its used also for the
block log. I don't really need it for what I'm trying to do right now, but it
would probably be useful for somebody)

Long formulas are creating horizontal scrollbars in small screens. If formulas

I assumed because other tools I was using at the time were not working that it
was related and the common denominator was tools lab. However, perhaps it is
something to do with xtools specifically and I'll take a closer look this

as this is intended for messages, my intended use case was more like:

   {{#link:$1|$2}}

and

$msg->params( $title->getLinkUrl( 'action=edit' ), 'edit' );

As suggested this becomes

{{#link:$1|returnto=$2|$3}}

Which just moves some of the logic from the php into the message template. I
don't think its desirable for the programmer or the translator to move this
logic into the message. Alternatively the programmer will use the first example
but stick 'Main_page|action=edit' into $1 which is equally undesirable. It is
quite likely the caller has a Title object and know how to use it.

It is hard to tell if this is an actual bug or an artifact of the beta labs
test environment, but in recently time the browser tests for MMV in Chrome have
been encountering sporadic errors on well-known test images "Error: Could not

Definitely a requirement. Plus points if this feature becomes a parameter of
fullurl (or two), including the being bound to current domain rather than
$wgCanonicalServer or whatever.

That error message indicates that you've installed things wrong somehow, so the
files aren't in the place they're expected to be. Without access to your
server, there's not much more I can tell you.

MediaWiki bugzilla is not the correct place to debug this issue, so I'm going
to close the bug.

I think I might recommend making the parameters compatible with localurl --
this would also allow for porting code between wikis that have different
installation directories.

For example one wiki might have /w/index.php and /wiki/Foo and another might
have /index.php and /index.php/Foo ...

So you'd do {{#link:Special:Userlogin|returnto=Hello world}} rather than
{{#link:/w/index.php?Special:Userlogin&returnto=Hello%20world}} and have the
link automatically generate for the correct site config.

This probably isn't a Beta Cluster problem(?) so I'm moving to VE (feel free to
move to where ever it really needs to be) on the assumption its a problem in
the code (and I don't want it to not be addressed because it's 'hidden' in the
Beta Cluster component).

Trevor says this requires re-writing toolbars to separate the Model from the
View. His comment on proposed code design is appreciated. :-)

This would allow:

* a bar with direct items and a sub-group shown as a list
* a list with direct items and a sub-group shown as a bar of obvious buttons
* a list with direct items and a sub-group shown as a sub-list
* a menu with a text-box for entry of a value (e.g. Google Doc's "help" menu)
* a menu with multiple sub-groups split by a horizontal bar – bug 71616 for
this

… and other things, no doubt.

Now I can reproduce this in Firefox:

1.  Open [[Railway company]].

2. Discover that the allegedly reliable source is a wikilink to another
article.

3.  Open ref dialog.

4. Select entire contents (one link).

5. Be confused about why nothing appears to happen.

I can copy the link, and I can replace it with garbage, but I cannot make it be
empty. Perhaps this is intentional? In which case, how can I first remove the
unwanted contents, and then add in good contents?

[Bug 72158] New: deep copy of Entity when calling Revision::getContent()

2014-10-16 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72158

Bug ID: 72158
   Summary: deep copy of Entity when calling
Revision::getContent()
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: WikidataRepo
  Assignee: wikidata-b...@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: aude.w...@gmail.com
CC: wikidata-b...@lists.wikimedia.org
   Web browser: ---
   Mobile Platform: ---

a deep copy "of Entity is made whenever calling Revision::getContent(). the
deep copy is done with "unserialize( serialize( $this ) );" which is expensive,
time and memory wise.

When saving an item, getContent() is called at least 15 times:

5x - WikiPage::getContent
1x - WikiPage::doEditContent
1x - WikiPage::prepareContentForEdit
1x - RepoHooks::onNewRevisionFromEditComplete
1x - WikiPage::isRedirect
1x - WikiPage::isCountable
2x - ChangeNotifier::notifyOnPageModification
2x - Revision::getText
2x - EchoDiscussionParser::getChangeInterpretationForRevision
1x - AbuseFilterHooks::filterEdit
1x - EntityChange::setRevisionInfo
1x - RepoHooks::notifyEntityStoreWatchersOnUpdate
1x - WikiPage::doEditUpdates
1x - Revision::checkContentModel
1x - WikiPage::updateRevisionOn

getContent might be called more times in various other extensions that I do not
have enabled currently.

When viewing or purging the item, getContent is called 5 times:

1x - WikiPage::isRedirect
1x - RepoHooks::onOutputPageBodyAttributes
1x - ViewEntityAction::show (via ContentRetriever::getContentForRequest)
1x - ViewEntityAction::isPlainView (again via
ContentRetriever::getContentForRequest)
1x - Article::fetchContentObject

possible action items are:

1) reduce the number of times getContent() is called.

2) maybe lazy initialize the full entity parameter? perhaps we can have some
sort of stubbed Entity / EntityContent object, with the entity serialization as
a variable, and then full serialize when getEntity is called? stuff like
redirect target and entity id and type might be made more easily accessible
without needing the entire entity object.

3) investigate alternatives for deep cloning the entity that are better
performance-wise, not needing to do full serialize/unserialize.
