[Bug 19114] Redirecting to the mobile site should always be optional

I agree. While I personally like the idea of an iPhone-optimised site for
browsing Wikipedia, I've found that the mobile site is very buggy, and it
shouldn't be forced onto thousands of users if it's not going to work properly.

Reopening.

Some quotes just from the *last couple of hours* of feedback on the mobile
site:

"The mobile site is not working for me. ... And it refuses to let me use the
regular wiki. So now it's useless to me. Please let me have the option of using
reg. Wiki. Yes, I chose the option. Got an error. Tried to disable mobile
permanently. Error again."

"Please do not set this as the default view for access to your site from a
mobile phone. If anything have it as an option. The normal
layout is much more user friendly"

"The iPhone handles real websites just fine and I would prefer to view and
navigate the real site, rather than a crippled mobile version."

"Why do I have to use your mobile site? ... Please make it easier to stay on
the regular site!"

Wikipedia gets shedloads of traffic, for every feedback comment recieved there
could be a thousand users out there with similar problems. Yes, there are
positive comments too, but this represents a serious usability issue, and
should not be dismissed just because the reporter lacked a solution.

Some of the feedback seems to echo the earlier suggestion of making the link to
the standard version more prominent. Personally, I think disabling the forced
redirection for iPhones would be a good start. They are versatile devices and
can view standard web pages pretty well; a lot of the complaints seem to be
along those lines. I'm more concerned that this doesn't just get marked invalid
and the user feedback ignored.

This ticket was about a normally-operating website and had
no direct action associated with it that could ever be totally
"resolved". That is, at the moment there is a link that disables
the redirect permanently for a particular user.

I have left open a ticket about dealing with the site in an error-mode.
That is an actionable ticket.

As far as having a ticket that is purely an aim of the project is
not a bug. Its an issue to keep in mind.

The goal of the redirect is that Google and device makers asked us
to implement an automatic redirect to the mobile site. When a user
is on their mobile device searching for an answer, the best thing to
do is to give them the answer they are looking for in an easy to read
format. That's why we have the redirect. We have a link to make that better
and in the future will look for specific suggestions about how to
improve upon that.

I would happily accept a ticket with an actual suggestion and leave
that open.

Uh, then why was this bug marked as INVALID? This is about the broader issue of
always ensuring there's an escape from the mobile site. Suggest re-opening.

If its at the top, then we are taking away precious screen real-estate
on mobile devices. We are working to make the pages smaller in general
so that it will be easier to reach that point, but for the moment, it stands
as a link at the bottom of the page.

Needing the main site is only really applicable to an extremely small portion
of the using public. That it, is to those who want to edit and who are advanced
users. And, we are more than willing to support them.

There's a link at the bottom of the page to view it on regular Wikipedia. I
think that should be moved up somewhere so one doesn't have to scroll all the
way to the bottom, maybe?
