Perhaps I'm not looking at the same problem, although on an initial read through, it looked very similar. Domas, this is a custom client. Originally the Accept-Encoding string was simply identity. When the gzipped page is stuck in the cache, it gets reported quickly as gibberish content and someone purges the cache of the page.
