Until that happens I think we should preserve the case of the input, as even
if that isn't what people want it is easily possible to change and pretty
intuitive how to do it - ie, type foo get [[foo]] but wanted [[Foo]],
all you need to do is type Foo instead. The current behaviour means you get
[[Foo]] regardless of what you want or do.
Possible, but a bit messy when writing certain articles like BLPs where most
link targets will be proper nouns.
The only other thing I can think of is for VE to read and respect things like
{{lowercase title}}. Once it does that then it should also respect things
like {{correct title}} for a default display text, and we should probably
create a {{Proper noun title}} for titles that should always be capitalised by
default.
Or rather than using templates we could move the title information into page
metadata. I have no idea whether any of this is practical, but if it is I
guess it would be better as one or maybe two separate bugs.
Yes, certainly for this to be used in VisualEditor it would need to be a proper
feature and not one hacked into a template; I think creating a bug for
MediaWiki having page-level meta-data about the correct display of a page's
title would be great, yes.

I've confirmed that it's Special:LanguageStats/sl: I created a module on meta
that just returns the values of two parameters, and if I passed
{{Special:LanguageStats/sl}} for the first one then this error occurred. Again,
the error stopped occurring after a short time.
I also noted that page title on page preview of a page containing only
{{Special:LanguageStats/sl}} (no Scribunto invocation at all) was being
reported as MediaWiki:Centralnotice-template-B13 0822 form newspacing left dr
enYY instead of User:Anomie/Sandbox2 while the bug was occurring.
Other than the corrupt title, I also note the following differences between the
output when the bug was occurring and when it wasn't:
* Group rows (the ones with [expand]/[collapse]) have ... in the value
columns instead of actual numbers. A number of the value rows do too, although
the row for MediaWiki:Centralnotice-template-B13 0822 form newspacing left dr
enYY is not among these.
* A bolded row for Fundraising 2012 was present, with state In Progress.
There is another In Progress (but non-bolded) row in the non-bugged output,
however.
* A bolded row for WMF Blog Posts was present, with empty state.
* The total row at the end also has

For most pages and by default* this would be identical to the all-lowercase rendering of its stored title, but where pages correctly start with a lowercase letter (on wikis where the first character is case insensitive), contain special characters or conflict with interwikis/namespaces, etc. the metadata would record the correct page title. It could also be used for titles that should be italicised. e.g. on en.wp: Page Title - Correct Title [[IPad]] - iPad [[Benzo(a)pyrene]] - Benzo[a]pyrene [[Pilot No. 5]]- Pilot #5 [[D Ream]] - D:Ream [[Computer]] - computer [indicating a common noun] [[Amy Studt]] - Amy Studt [indicating the title is proper noun] [[Animal Farm]]- iAnimal Farm/i [italicised proper noun, the tags are not literal] The displayed title would be taken from this metadata and as such would effectively supercede the DISPLAYTITLE magic word and the [[template:correct title]] family of templates (and the equivalents on other wikis). Right now VisualEditor never does this, but earlier today I was experimenting with this (the language inspector might need to do this to properly flip the directionality of an individual list item, wrapping the inner content is not an option as then the number would be on the wrong side). These changes will temporary break the redirections from HTTP to HTTPS for logged users when it will be deployed until the next login. If possible I think it is better to let wikitech ambassadors know this fact to reduce surprises of the editors; the next Tech News will be probably issued in English tommorow evening, is there an expected deployment date for these two changes?
