Look at the right side Google Knowledge Graph panel Wikipedia is
displayed as sources of information. Wikipedia gets attribution and a
bit of free advertising.

Compared to bold prominent link to Wikipedia as the first result of the
same search, I wonder how much traffic a little link tucked into the
sidebar on the right actually gets.

I think at least one group of people will read the small links very
carefully: spammers who want to get visibility on Google. I am not sure
if it would be so good for us at the current stage (with our current
anti-spam infrastructure) to widely advertise Wikidata as an entry point
to Google (which I still believe it is not, but things might change, and
the question of how we want this to be displayed might come up
eventually). The SEO people already try to convince others that Google
is using Wikidata, but I think they also are aware of the fact that this
is all but clear so far. At the time when Google really starts using our
data in significant ways, and this becomes publicly documented, we need
to be prepared for a lot more spam than we are seeing now.

Re: [Wikidata] Op-ed on Wikipedia Signpost regarding Wikidata licensing

2016-06-20 Thread Info WorldUniversity
Nicolas, Markus, Gerrard, Stas, Egon and Wikidatans,

Thanks for your clarifications from within the Wikidata community about
Creative Commons' licensing and possible other ones.

With CC Wikidata's 358 languages, it seems to be in an important position
over time to help define and come into conversation about these licensing
issues, in collaboration with Creative Commons itself, with ever further
precision and consideration, if only in Wikipedia/Wikidata pages. As these
licensing questions unfold over the decades ahead and possibly
differentially in the many languages' countries' legal systems even (i.e.
CC may unfold differently in different nation states over decades and
longer), I hope too CC World University and School (which was donated to CC
Wikidata last autumn) and which seeks to develop and offer CC law degrees
in all countries' main languages by hiring law faculty, first probably as
graduate student instructors, can help co-develop further some of these CC
licensing considerations, even as the Wikidata community continues to focus
on altruism and sharing, and comes into conversation about this via
Creative Commons' licensing at present.

These licensing issues (and related emergent questions) will probably only
grow in sophistication as Wikidata and information technologies themselves
(in all languages) develop in the long run, and I'm glad you/we Wikidatans
are addressing these issues directly as they unfold. Thank you.

All the best,
Scott

Re: [Wikidata] Op-ed on Wikipedia Signpost regarding Wikidata licensing

2016-06-20 Thread Stas Malyshev
Hi!

> Current legislations do not support the licensing of individual facts,
> only of databases as a whole, and only in some countries. What you are

Added to that, even if it *were* possible to copyright facts, I think
using restrictive license (and make no mistake, any license that
requires people to do specific things in exchange for data access *is*
restrictive) makes a lot of trouble for any people using the data. This
is especially true for data that is meant for automatic processing - you
will have to add code to track licenses for each data unit, figure out
how exactly to comply with the license (which would probably require
professional help, always expensive), track license-contaminated data
throughout the mixed databases, verify all outputs to ensure only
properly-licensed data goes out... It presents so much trouble many
people would just not bother with it. It would hinder exactly the thing
opens source excels at - creating community of people building on each
other's work by means of incremental contribution and wide participation.
Want to create cool a visualization based on Wikidata? Talk to a lawyer
first. Want kickstart your research exploration using Wikidata facts? To
the lawyer you go. Want to write an article on, say, gender balance in
science over the ages and places, and feature Wikidata facts as an
example? Where's that lawyer's email again?
You get the picture, I hope. How many people would decide "well, it
would be cool but I have no time and resource to figure out all the
license issues" and not do the next cool thing they could do? Is it
something we really want to happen?

And all that trouble to no benefit to anyone - there's absolutely no
threat of Wikidata database being taken over and somehow subverted by
"enterprises", whatever that nebulous term means. In fact, if Google
example shows us anything, it's that "enterprises" are not very good at
it and don't really want it. Would they benefit from the free and open
data? Of course they would, as would everybody. The world - including
everybody, including "enterprises" - benefited enormously from free and
open participatory culture, be it open source software or free data. It
is a *good thing*, not something to be afraid of!

Wikidata data is meant for free use and reuse. Let's not erect
artificial barriers to it out of misguided fear to somehow benefit
somebody "wrong".

@aaron As Hoo sais, the Special page is for editing the entity. That should not be done based on stale data. Do you have an alternative suggestion? Usually, the data from the slave would be fine, but there is no way to know if it is stale or not, until we ask the master DB. How is this handled for action="">

The second case (access from Lua) should only happen as a fallback, when the entity isn't found in the slave DB. This is probably rare... except when the entity actually doesn't exist, but we can't be sure until we hit the master DB.

But I guess for the second case, it would be OK to fail if the data isn't on the slave DB yet. What do you think, @hoo?TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T110399EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: danielCc: daniel, hoo, aude, Joe, Krenair, PleaseStand, gerritbot, Aklapper, aaron, Gilles, Nemo_bis, MZMcBride, Glaisher, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, Mbch331___

Repeating what I wrote in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/295213:

I think sending a "200 OK" status code is wrong. These pages should be indexed by search engines when they exist and contain something. With a 200 the number of pages indexed on Commons will double, but half of these pages will not contain anything useful. Let's please stay with the 404 or use a more suitable status code.
I think Special:EntityData should return an empty JSON blob, as if an empty entity exists. Main reason: It must be possible to edit such a non-existing page. We agreed that the UI should allow editing non-existing entities. External tools and bots should behave identical, which means all our getter APIs as well as EntityData should return something you can edit.
But not in dumps, for, well, I think obvious reasons. The stuff in dumps is usually not used for editing, but purely for consumption. Having an empty JSON blob in there is not very different from omitting it.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T138227: Move ID assignment out of EntityStore

2016-06-20 Thread daniel
daniel created this task.daniel added projects: Wikidata, MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseRepository.Herald added subscribers: Zppix, Aklapper.
TASK DESCRIPTIONCurrently, EntityStore allows entities with no ID set to be passed to saveEntity(). A fresh ID will then be assigned before saving.

In practice, this feature is only used for setting up test fixtures. In production code, the caller controls what ID is assigned and when. This seems more sensible, since if and how IDs can be assigned depends on the entity type, and perhaps also on the context / use case.

The following steps are needed to improve the situation:

saveEntity should require the ID to be set. This means a lot of test cases need fixing.
assignFreshId should be removed from the EntityStore interface. It seems like we would currently need to repeat the old logic in the following places: MockEntityStore, ModifyEntity, SpecialNewEntity, and perhaps EntitySavingHelper (once EntitySavingHelper can also create entities).
IdGenerator should take entity types, not content model IDs, as a parameter. The IdGenerator interface does not specify what "$type" is, but we can't change the interpretation on a live system without migrating the counters in the database table used to track ID creation. (Changing this is not strictly needed, but would allow us to use IdGenerator directly in the places that need to assign ids).

2016-06-20 Thread daniel
daniel edited the task description. (Show Details)
EDIT DETAILS...Note that "virtual" MediaInfo entities are not necessarily empty. At least their RFC mapping (and probably also their JSON representation) would at least contain the URI of the corresponding media file (and perhaps URLs of the file page, the file itself, a thumbnail, etc). Additional information could be optionally included: the media file's mime type, size, resolution, duration, and other meta-data.

Also keep in mind that in the final product, the MediaInfo content would not live on a separate page, but in a "slot" of the file page itself, and other meta-datasee T107595.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T138226EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: danielCc: Aklapper, Zppix, daniel, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Ricordisamoa, Mbch331___

daniel created this task.daniel added projects: Wikidata, MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseMediaInfo.Herald added subscribers: Zppix, Aklapper.
TASK DESCRIPTIONWe currently display a virtual ("dummy") MediaInfo entity when trying to access a non-existingMediaInfo page associated with an existing File page (see T137534).

There are several open questions about how far this "virtual" entities should go. Should we consider such entities to exist (so it's just the wiki page that doesn't exist)? In particular:

should we send status 404 when displaying a virtual entity?
should EntityStore resolve valid IDs to virtual entities, even if there is no corresponding wiki page to load data from?
should virtual entities be supported by Special:EntityData?
should virtual entities be included in dumps?

Ok so I would really like to avoid having to make this optional but if it needs to happen then it needs to happen.

If we make it optional we have at least two ways:

per project (either a project has language fallbacks or not)
per function call (you specify if you want fallbacks for every Lua call)

The latter seems like a really bad idea to me because it introduces a huge amount of complexity.
