[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T159514: Who are the target users of our documentation

2017-03-02 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich created this task.Jan_Dittrich added projects: Wikimedia-Hackathon-2017, Wikidata, Documentation.
TASK DESCRIPTIONStory: As a writer of documentation, I easily forget (or are unsure about) what kind of person will read the documentation

Problem: We don’t have any help in place to clarify the target readers and/or to make oneself aware of it.

Possible Solutions: Create some personas/reader profiles. We could take existing Wikidata Personas, however, they are focused on software, not documentation. Also, people might want to be part of creating the personas themselves (without original research it is more a proto-persona, but anyway). Suggestion:

Take Wikidata personas as example
Do a 30min Persona creation session
Define for the docs to be written which personas would need to use them

I think I understand why you write this (i.e. that developers should spend their valuable time together, working on the really hard problems, and not on writing beginner documentation), but if I may offer a few counterpoint thoughts:

These (3 documentation tasks) are all-day sessions, and are suitable for drop-in; so if an experienced dev wants to take a break from more complex code-oriented thinking, they can optionally do so here.
There are usually a small number of newcomer developers in attendance, plus a few experienced-editor non-developers. - These people will (a) be able to provide beginner-perspective insights (to the experienced developers) for why a documentation-change, or a feature-request, or an interface-design-change is desired, and (b) will be able to talk directly to experienced-developers in order to get technically precise summaries, that they as newcomers/non-developers can then help to document, from a beginner's perspective.
Documentation problems are so common (throughout the world, not just software!) that they rarely even get discussed in detail. These sessions will give a space for spitballing (sharing/brainstorming/etc) our collective gripes and suggestions. Some of the people who are there, might be inspired to finally fix those longstanding problems! At the very least, a detailed to-do list or options-list can be written down, and then the gritty detailed work can be done at a slower pace when everyone is back home.

In T151678#3068396, @Florian wrote:
However, two questions: How would mediawiki/core (or even Wikibase) find the _correct_ item to link a specific page to?

This item should always be the one to which the source page is linked. If you were asking for a lower-level answer, I'm sorry, I'm not familiar enough with mediawiki/core nor with Wikibase.

And what should happen when no item was found? Should an item be automatically created (which could be duplicate dthen) or should the user get a question? :)

Ideally, just after typing the source page, the special page could show a message on the fly that let the user know if an item will be created.

However, I think that the idea of refreshing the special page and showing a question and an additional checkbox after pressing Import can be the best solution if development time, or resources in general, are limited for this low-priority task. This solution would be the same, mutatis mutandis, as the one currently used when an administrator tries to move a page to a title which is already taken by a different page.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T151678EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: abianCc: Florian, abian, Aklapper, Ptolusque, Sethakill, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___

[Wikidata] Use of Wikidata as a source for "mainstream" media

2017-03-02 Thread Aidan Hogan

Hi all,

Is there a list somewhere of instances where the "mainstream" media has
used Wikidata as a source?

I found two thus far:

[1] BuzzFeed checking if 2016 really was a bad year (relatively
speaking) in terms of celebrity deaths.

[2] Le monde checking if 27 is really a dangerous year for artists to be
alive.

Pointers to further instances of Wikidata being used as a source in
mainstream media (or indeed in very prominent applications) would be
greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Aidan

P.S., I also found a link to a Wiki page with lists of press coverage,
but unfortunately it hasn't been updated in recent years [3]. There I
found some articles about Histopedia, etc., in the Guardian.

The trouble here isn't really SQL to SPARQL etc.. In my experience, it's
more to do with understanding what data is and the nature of data
representation. Having arrived at the aforementioned conclusion over the
years, I published a presentation titled "Understanding Data" as an aid
in this area [1].

SQL and SPARQL aren't very good starting points because literature
associated with both assume some fundamental understanding about the
nature of data (relations) against which they operate.

If one starts the journey with data representation comprehension
combined with clarity about RDF as a language, my hope is that folks
reach a point where creating RDF statements always includes (so SPARQL
compliant servers don't need to inject workarounds for label injection
into query solutions):

1. Addition of annotation relations esp., the likes of rdfs:label,
skos:prefLabel, skos:altLabel, schema:name, foaf:name, rdfs:comment,
schema:description etc..

2. Addition (where possible) use of relations such as foaf:depiction,
schema:image etc..

Adhering to the above leads to RDF statement collections that are easier
to read, without the confusing nature of the term "graph" getting in the
way. At the end of the day, RDF is simply an abstract language for
creating structured data using a variety of notations (RDF-Turtle,
RDF-NTriples, JSON-LD, RDF-XML etc..). It isn't a format, but sadly
that's how it is still perceived by most circa., 2017 (even though the
initial RDF definition snafu on this front occurred around 2000).

SPARQL is a Query Language for operating on data represented as a
collection of RDF statements grouped by statement Predicate, as opposed
to SQL which is oriented towards data represented as Records grouped by
Table.

Re: [Wikidata] Documentation sprint for Wikidata during the Wikimedia Hackathon

2017-03-02 Thread Brill Lyle
Hello Wikidatans,

I have been very vocal about the lack of documentation -- and critical need
for documentation regarding Wikidata.

I haven't had a chance to watch the recent intro to Wikidata video that
Asaf did here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVrAx3AmUvA but I think it is
in essence and concept as an approach pretty much inadequate as well.

Newbies need something more simple than this, that isn't a talking head
talking at them.

Not super thrilled this is a crowd-sourced effort. I think this should be
created by Wikidata and should be as graphic and simple as possible. It
should be a somewhat professionally produced type of output, similar to the
basic Wiki intros I use at editathons:
- 5 Pillars - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Five_pillars
- Intro to Wiki (self-paced, takes 10 minutes each track) -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Introduction
- Wiki Tutorial with very helpful videos -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tutorial

As I try to say to myself, Keep It Simple, Stupid :-) I'm saying that
about myself, not anyone else But yeah.

The biggest problem:

This approach and output would require a different, less technical approach
to Wikidata, which has been a consistent issue -- at least for me --
regarding Wikidata's approaches and the willingness of the large majority
of participants to care about end user issues, especially folks like me
coming from English Wikipedia.

I think it's important to question who the audience of these materials are
going to be.

Is it for Wikipedia editors (again apologies, I'm assuming English
Wikipedia)?

Is it for newbies attending editathons and learning how to edit?

Is it for tech folks who can handle a lot more higher level database and
data manipulation concepts?

I don't know. I am I guess not a beginner when it comes to Wikidata but I
still feel inadequate and frustrated oftentimes with the interface and
knowing stuff. And I use Wikidata ALL THE TIME.

So my 2 cents on this.

I wish I could participate in person at the event -- although I might have
a contrarian perspective, as usual.

I would also like to help more actively on this, as it is so important to
me personally.

I would be happy to help if I can in any way.

Erika

For Incubator, I think it would be good if they'd have at least random access to Wikidata to read data from items. Even if it would mean specifying the item to read that from, this would allow to build infoboxes and display data from Wikidata.

Recent imports of old-style interwikis from new Wikipedias that were prepared on Incubator was fairly efficient and quick.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T54971EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Esc3300Cc: Samwilson, Esc3300, srishakatux, C933103, Stashbot, hoo, aude, JanZerebecki, TTO, Liuxinyu970226, Accurimbono, Aklapper, Ricordisamoa, Purodha, liangent, Wikidata-bugs, Vogone, Candalua, SPQRobin, mxn, Filceolaire, jayvdb, Micru, revi, Billinghurst, Lydia_Pintscher, MF-Warburg, zhuyifei1999, Tpt, JohnLewis, D3r1ck01, Izno, Mbch331, Jay8g___

I moved this task to the Extension special pages, even if the change res requested to land on the Special:Import page. The reason is, that the main functionality should be developed in Wikibase, not in mediawiki/core. If there's something missing in the Special:Import page (e.g. a hook or whatever), we can think about changing this :P

However, two questions: How would mediawiki/core (or even Wikibase) find the _correct_ item to link a specific page to? And what should happen when no item was found? Should an item be automatically created (which could be duplicate dthen) or should the user get a question? :)TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T151678EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: FlorianCc: Florian, abian, Aklapper, Ptolusque, Sethakill, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___

Re: [Wikidata] Documentation sprint for Wikidata during the Wikimedia Hackathon

2017-03-02 Thread Rick Labs
Might want to consider beginner, streamlined documentation to learn
SPARQL (including WikiData specifics).

Most census/demographic statisticians, economists and business people
are coming from the relational database world (SQL and spreadsheets), so
making the hop over to RDF / linked data involves quite a learning
curve. They get frustrated because they are highly productive with SQL,
yet flounder on the SPARQL side without graduated help.

SPARQL syntax is not entirely "intuitive" for SQL users. A really good
tutorial that starts at ground zero and takes a user up to a minimal
level of independent SPARQL proficiency would be great. If users can
fairly quickly write simple queries and get useful results they are
better motivated to go further, and learn more nuances.

The label service is also not totally "beginner" friendly (for data
users). The subject: "[Wikidata] Label gaps on Wikidata" illustrates
some struggles that pop up immediately for many new users. General level
SPARQL textbooks have zero coverage of WikiData specifics.

Perhaps high quality documentation already exists? Would be great to
have at least a syllabus (learn this first, then move on to this, then
on to... Might be good to also have common / high value "use-case"
scenarios with pointers to documentation/tutorials that cover it.
Existing example queries are very helpful but many are complex. For
training purposes we need a graduated set of examples, that are designed
step-by-step to teach how to construct queries.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T159218: [Hackathon doc sprint] Wikibase installation

2017-03-02 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich added a comment.
For the usecase "install wikibase" we don’t necessarily shine:

Use a major search engine with "wikibase", go to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikibase
The page offers almost no description, looks like no one cares for it.
User needs: …to klick the link to wikiba.se
Possible task: Offer brief info, a screenshot and a easy to find link to wikiba.se (or just provide all there?)

Look at wikiba.se
There is no info for common usecases like "using the client as a user" or "install"
User needs to: …first choose if one wants client or repo
Possible task: provide info that leads to installation and/or use docs. I assume, you first need a repo. In this case it should be somewhat standard.

Look at more info on the repo
There is no info for common usecases like "using the client as a user" or "install"
…but at least a download link
User needs to: Klick the download link
Possible task: again, clearer info for usecases like install

Now I’m back to mediawiki?! https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Wikibase_Repository#Download
I get the git template which has many options, only some somewhat related to download
I should either select an branch or
checkout via git
Possible tasks: The git template could be improved or we provide a section without it

F6005245: image.png
There is an additional optional field, The bottom field, "Language of Lemma", which would be optional and only shown, if the language of the lexeme is one that has several written forms. If you want.

The current UI on which it was based:
F6005309: image.png

Differences:

Lemma on top (since this is likely to be the most important thing for the user, also we may be able to suggest a language based on it’s input)#
Language of lemma optional (since it is only needed if there are e.g. different spellings for the same concept)
Help icons. The wording is very technical/sciency. The least we can do is to provide help.
Examples for the kind of input in the secondary text in the box instead of the generic and providing-a-technical-access "Enter ID"

[Wikidata] Documentation sprint for Wikidata during the Wikimedia Hackathon

2017-03-02 Thread Léa Lacroix
Hello all,

As you know, the Wikimedia hackathon
 will take place
on May 19-21 in Vienna.

During this event, we will organize a documentation sprint to help
volunteers to improve the user-level documentation for Wikidata.

During these 3 days, you'll be able to join (IRL or remotely, at any
moment) to work on improving and translating the help pages. We suggest a
focus on these 3 topics:

   - Beginner documentation about Wikidata

   - Lua for Wikimedians
   - Wikibase installation

We will also organize some workshops (translation tools, illustration...)
to help you build a better documentation.

You will find all the information on the related page
.
If you're interested, feel free to add yourself in the attendees list.

We're now building a list of simple tasks that volunteers could work on
during the event. If you have any ideas, parts of the documentation that
should really be improved... feel free to add your ideas on the talk page
,
or if you feel comfortable with Phabricator, directly create subtasks of
the tasks listed above.

Thanks a lot, and maybe see you there!

I got composer upgraded to 1.1.0 which let us merge the extra section from mw/core into vendor and thus enable merging of the autoload-dev section.

That is only enabled on the mediawiki/extensions/Wikidata repo for now. The build that happened few minutes ago https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/340698/ fails with some ham crest mismatch. Ie both() is actually found.

Build: https://integration.wikimedia.org/ci/job/mwext-testextension-hhvm/38654/console

As soon as we can provide a viable structure to test, we will announce it
