[Wikidata] Re: Question about Self-Promotion on Wikidata

2022-12-13 Thread Yaroslav Blanter
I can also add that as a Wikidata administrator I delete promotion items on
a daily basis. There are plenty of them, and they are not always easy to
spot.

[Wikidata] Re: Question about Self-Promotion on Wikidata

2022-12-13 Thread Luca Martinelli [Sannita]
Hi Crystal, thanks for your message.

No, it is not in line with the Wikidata policies, but unfortunately we
can do only so much to counter this. Companies who do this kind of
actions on Wikipedia existed for a very long time now, it was only a
matter of time that this would happen on Wikidata too.

What you can do to help us is to mark for deletion such items whenever
you find one. You can go to
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Preferences, click on the
"Gadget" tab and tick the gadget "RequestDeletion": this is a rather
simple way for you to notice us admins of potentially spammy items.
Then it will be on us to check if they can be deleted of course, but
at least we would be notified. :)

More generally, these kinds of companies never distracted us so much
from the real deal, which is to contribute constructively to the
project. We're aware of the risk, but it's not a reason to let
ourselves down. ;)

Thanks again!

[Wikidata] Question about Self-Promotion on Wikidata

2022-12-13 Thread Crystal Yragui
Hi all,

I just ran across this advertisement for
a personal and business branding/reputation repair (?) company that offers
advice on creating your own wikidata page for self-promotion, and offers
services including "Wikipedia Creation for Business", "Wikipedia Editing for
Business", Wikipedia Creation for Individuals", and "Wikipedia Editing for
Individuals" in addition to Wikidata editing/creation. Does this align with
Wikidata/Wikipedia's policies on self-promotion? It seems like an avenue for
people/businesses who are willing to pay to get themselves improved visibility
and reputations on Wikimedia platforms.

I didn't know where to send this, but thought the Wikidata community ought to
at least be aware of it.

Thanks,

[Wikidata] New Question Answering tool for Wikidata [feedback needed]

2022-12-13 Thread Aidan Hogan

Hi all,

Francisca in CC is an undergraduate student who has been working in the
past few months on a new template-based Question Answering (QA) tool for
Wikidata called Templet, which is available here:

https://templet.dcc.uchile.cl/

We would be *very* grateful if you could help us to evaluate and improve
the tool by answering the following quick questionnaire that Francisca
has prepared (should take only a few minutes):

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeuqtS8jbTOXFNsnVwTEYf_vk2zXPHj8FococAzdPQCk1hIBw/viewform

Templet is based on questions from QAWiki (http://qawiki.org/), which
anyone can add questions/queries to. But QAWiki is perhaps a subject for
a follow-up email later. For now we would be very grateful for your
feedback on Templet itself via the survey linked above. :)

Best regards,
Aidan & Francisca

[Wikidata] Wikimedia Hackathon 2023: registration and scholarship application open

2022-12-13 Thread Léa Lacroix
Hello all,

As you may have heard, the Wikimedia Hackathon
 is back in person
on May 19-21 in Athens, Greece. We are now opening the registration form
that also includes an optional scholarship application form open until
January 14th.

Registration is required to attend the onsite Wikimedia Hackathon in
Athens. The registration form remains open until we reach the capacity of
the venue (around 220 people). The event is free of charge - participants
are expected to book their travel arrangements individually, unless they
are granted a scholarship.

You can register here by getting yourself a (free) ticket for the hackathon!
 (see also the detailed
instructions

)

In order to support the technical community and participants from diverse
backgrounds, the Wikimedia Foundation provides scholarships that cover
travel and accommodation for a selected number of technical contributors.
The application form is part of the registration process, and is open
until January
14th. You can find more information about the scholarship process,
committee and criteria on the related page

.

The registration and scholarship application form runs with Pretix, an open
source third-party service, which may subject it to additional terms. For
more information on privacy and data-handling, see the privacy statement

.

If you’d like to connect with others on plans for the hackathon, the talk
page
and the other channels listed here
 are good
places to get started!

If you have any questions or issues with the registration form and/or the
scholarship application, feel free to reach out to the organization team on
the talk page or at hackat...@wikimedia.org.

For the organization team,
