Dear Jan,

Personally, I haven’t been particularly annoyed by the amount of “spam” to this 
list.
To me, a “reactive” moderation approach is absolutely fine to me. List admins 
could just let senders know after the fact that off-topic messages are not 
welcome.
Senders known to post mainly unrelated stuff can be put on individual 
moderation.

So, the current practice as you describe it, looks perfect to me.

Beat, do you suggest that all messages should be moderated?

Because right now it is not, and I was hoping that we could keep like that and 
just ask people to not spam the list (and if they do, put them individually on

Maybe not a full ban (or maybe, I wouldn't be against it) but at least some 
clear rules to avoid these spam.

My 2 cents:
An example of mail that should absolutely be avoided (and not just on this 
mailing list) is when a similar mail is sent several times in a short timespan. 
We had almost the same mail sent in 2 days this week ! (not to blame this 
person in particular, this is not the first time it happens and it's bad 
communication).
Also, senders should strive to make an effort to tell us how the call is 
related and/or could benefit to/from Wikidata (very often it's unclear, we 
shouldn't have to guess why we are receiving these calls).

Hi Jane,

The source is a database; according to present guidelines 
(https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Sources), databases should be referenced as 
follows:

-  “stated in (P248)” pointing to the WD item of the database, with the 
following qualifiers:

o   Database property ID

o   Title of the dataset in the database

o   Publication date (P577)

In my concrete case, the database property ID corresponds to the GLAM-ID 
declared directly in the Wikidata-item, so I wasn’t going to repeat it for the 
reference.
As the database contains several releases of only one dataset, I was just going 
to use the publication date of a given release to further specify the source.

Now, upon reflection, I might just create a different WD item for each new 
release of the dataset as a workaround to the present limitations of the Quick 
Statements Tool.
In the longer run, we probably still should have a tool to batch ingest data 
that covers all the cases stipulated in the guidelines. Otherwise, we will see 
breaches of the guidelines due to avoidance practices triggered by the 
limitations of our tools.

Why the fixation on the publication date alone? Why not author etc? If you 
first add the source as an item, then you can put the author and publication 
date etc in the source item. When adding it as a source in a reference 
statement, it has the publication date in there implicitly. You can probably 
also query that usage data based on the publication date or authorship somehow. 
The problem is that you need to make items for the sources you want to 
reference with a publication date.

I've recently tried in vain to add a "publication date" qualifier to a 
reference, using the Quick Statements Tool. I've posted the issue on Magnus' 
Talk Page, but haven't gotten any response so far:
