[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T308657: Define placement of sitelink item search in Vector 2022 skin

2022-05-30 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich added a comment.

I looked into this to find out what this function does. Here is what I
currently assume:

  - It uses the same API as https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:ItemByTitle
which searched by the title that the Article for an item has on //another
Wiki//.
  - that //other wiki// is Wikipedia in the language in which the user views
the Wikidata interface: If you view it e.g. in German, it uses dewiki and uses
the titles of German Wikipedia articles to link you to their corresponding
Wikidata items. (…so there is some indirection (Other Wikipedia as title
source, implicit Wikipedia selection via Wikidata interface setting) involved
to understand it.)

  - I do not know why users prefer this search, but I assume it can be more
predictable than the "normal" search, since it only considers titles (but
titles of a specific //Wikipedia//). It also might be useful for people
switching between "their" Wikipedia and Wikidata (as they can transfer
familiarity from their Wikipedia to Wikidata).
  - The description on the gadget page is "search form to find an item directly
by its sitelink", which I found a bit irritating, since one item can have many
sitelinks.

  What about:

**Proposal title:** Wikidata user retention over time?
**Session type:** Lightning or short, I guess?
**Abstract:** People leave online communities after some time. However, the
likelyhood that a particular user leaves the project is dependent on the time
they have been on the project already: People who have only spend a brief time
in the project are more likely to leave than people who are long-term members.
This is similar to the so-called "Lindy Effect". We modeled the curve for the
likelihood of leaving the project depending on the time of past participation
and will present methods, outcomes and practical relevance.
**Notes:** We would show some slides
**Session Image:** Maybe the diagram in from the original issue?

  - If it is possible to give "human" labels to the variables, and //if// I
understand them right it might be useful to do the following
- current_year → over last 12 month
- current_snapshot → over last month
- history_to_current_snapshot → all time
  - For the diagram it would be great to have a reset button somewhere in case
one creates a mess by zooming in or panning away from the graph. Hope that is
just a config option.

Is there some (implicit) standard where the logo should be?
Currently is it as big as on Wikidata itself, on the right side and linked to
Wikidata. So currently is has undue weight.

  F34133713: image.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F34133713>

I personally would probably put it in the footer. If branding guidelines
allow we could also put it in front of the headline (Which nicely doubles as
"[Wikidata] Itemset…"

  F34133720: image.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F34133720>

But I would not link Wikdata.org then, as logo in left upper corner is
usually "back to homepage" as a reset when lost in navigation (The current logo
has this too, but, as it is on the right, it is less of a problem)

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T276236: meaningful error messages in case of API- or Parsing-Problems

2021-03-02 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich created this task.
Jan_Dittrich added projects: Item Quality Evaluator, Wikidata.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
Need: As an user, I want to be informed when there is a problem and be able
to solve it, if needed.

**Problem:** When the user clicks the button to "assess item quality" the
data is requested from the API, which might return an error

  **Suggested messages:**

In case the API can’t be reached: "There was a problem connecting to the
service. Please check your internet connection or try again later"

In case the result can’t be parsed: "There was a problem parsing the results
from the APIs. This is probably a problem with our code. If you know how,
report the issue at [link]"

  F34131660: image.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F34131660>

It would be called from the link in the header on both pages.
The page is not scrollable when it is open; the popups position is fixed.
Thus, the popup has a scrollbar.
It closes again when clicking on the "Back to…" on top, or, on desktop, when
users click on the darkened areas around it.

The popup is opened from a link in the header on both of our views

Ideally, the table would give the item label, item QId, weighted ORES Score

  Thanks!

If I understand you correctly, you can/did calculate scores based on

Edits from within a month ("income", monthly)
Edits from within a year ("income", yearly)

for the "since the beginning of time" ("wealth") however, you wonder why
there needs to be a month/year distinction. This is a good point – the
time-frame would always be "begin-now", no matter if one measures it yearly,
monthly, every second… You are totally right on this one, we do not need two.

I do not know how costly running "begin of time" is – I am pretty fine with
running it every 3 month or so, too to save some computing time and CO2.

  > I suggest that we start the data acquisition procedures as of this month,
and then slowly accumulate the time-series during 2021.

  Sounds good to me!

  > Besides these technical difficulties, everything else that we need to serve
the datasets and results can be solved in no time. The dashboard, if we want
one, will be rather simple.

I am fine with datasets, but if it is easy to do, a simple dashboard might
increase the usefulness for people who want to have a brief look and/or are not
much into R/Excel.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T270109: Hoover Inequality Score Data Retrival and Calculation

2020-12-14 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich created this task.
Jan_Dittrich added a project: Wikidata.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
**User Story:**: As a PM/UX-Person I want to use an inequality score as part
of assessing community health

Based on the input of @GoranSMilovanovic, @guergana.tzatchkova and me, I
suggest and document the following:

  Data retrieval
  --

To calculate the inequality of account edit contributions, we need to count
edits for accounts. This means we need a way to select the accounts and a way
to count edits.

Account selection: All accounts that have been active in a certain timeframe.
I suggest two levels of granularity: Month and Year.

Counting Edits: I suggest two ways to count the edits: Edits done within that
timeframe and total edits ever done, measured at the end of this timeframe.
This is equivalent to measuring income and wealth, respectively in economics.

  This gives us 4 tables:

  | | Month | Year |
  | --- | - | - |
  | Edits-over-time | edits | edits |
  | Total-at-time | edits | edits |
  |

These tables could either be just a list of edits ("long form") or be
aggregated to a two column table that shows how often which edit count was in
the set: We counted X accounts to have an edit count of Y ("aggregated form")

  Calculate hoover score
  --

The score could be calculated with existing R packages. If they are not fast
enough, we might need to consider optimization. The formula for hoover is quite
simple and vectorizable afaic , so I guess it might run just fine. Let's keep
in mind, that we need to run the scoring monthly and yearly, so it is not a
continuous load.

The resulting hover scores should be appended to tables of hoover scores.
Again, these will be 4 tables:

  | | Monthly | Yearly |
  | --- | --- | -- |
  | Edits-over-time | hoover | hoover |
  | Total-at-time | hoover | hoover |
  |

and each table has two columns, one for the point in time and one for the
according score at this moment (which way of measurement needs to be stated in
the table’s name or in some metadata or in an extra "type-cell" for each row
(which would be quite redundant)

  Presenting the scores
  -

In the simplest case, we only provide the data and can see how it changes
over time by importing it to excel or the like. Even better if we have a tool
that visualizes the data:

  F33945562: image.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F33945562>

(The wireframe has no timeframe selection, as the data will be small enough
to just scroll back)

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T266960: investigate sharing of query builder queries via URL [timebox: 4h]

2020-12-01 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich added a comment.

Just a reminder from user research: Participants love a sharing option; the
problem with storing state in URLs is that the data that the URL can carry was,
at least for some the handwritten requests, rather limited and people started
to code-golf their queries.

@Ladsgroup: Vue state is a magic-ified javascript objects as far as I am
concerned so one can probably URL-encode, URL-decode, JSON-parse and then use
them in Vue (maybe in some hook or so, not sure exactly where). (The answer is
clearer for vue3 since they split the reactivity from the main lib and here
your objects and arrays are reactivized by getting the return of ref(yourdata)
or reactive(yourdata))

voiced problems with data modeling. See the Report, Chapter "There is no

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T267635: Get 2020 user/editcount data to determine count at percentiles

2020-11-10 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich created this task.
Jan_Dittrich added projects: Wikidata, WMDE-Analytics-Engineering.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
Same as T242631 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T242631>, but for data
from recent months

**User Story:**: As a UX Researcher, I want to know how "typical" a certain
edit count among editors who have been active in some timeframe in the last
months. (I would like to check how the numbers changed since T242631
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T242631> and I would also like to create a
list of edit count ranges for a survey, so editors do not need to state their
(de-anonymizable) editcount)

Format: Ideally, I would have a table (CSV) or even just the query that I can
put into quarry to generate the table

  Columns:

  - (pseudonymous) user (some key/id is sufficient)
  - User edit count
  - Last active on [UNIX DATE] (basically I want to have active users
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikistats_metrics/Editors>, but it
might be helpful to have users who did <5 edits in the last month)
  - ideally, a column indicating if the account is a bot or not (Bot: TRUE |
FALSE or so).

This might be a very long table, so if it goes beyond 20MB I'd also take a
sampled or some sort of truncated version.

  > What you mean is clear but any concrete example exhibits the problem that
it would showcase (and thus, arguably, favor) the use of one particular
technology

I think that this kind of neutrality is not very helpful beyond the claim of
neutrality itself; even a LESS-writing person will benefit from a SASS example.

  > It always was assumption that the "Show code" link…

I think it would be helpful to see how several of the components can be
combined

I am also unsure about the code shown… I never used vue components this way
(`function normal(): Component {`). Is this typescript/ a typescript way of
doing it?

Maybe the language used in the examples is something that should be pointed
out in the "getting started" or at the examples themselves. Similarly, the
project seems to assume webpack (?) which also could be pointed out.

  > How to get to them is documented here:
https://wmde.github.io/wikit/?path=/docs/documentation-getting-started--page#using-tokens

I think also here it would be good to have an example of using tokens.

Thanks for pointing this out! It just indicates that, while one user should
be one row, I do not need the userID or user name, just some key that is unique
is the table.
Also (but I think you guessed so already), it would be great if a bot/not bot
column would be there OR if bots would be directly exculuded (if I get the data

As for getting the relation of clicks:

Of all people that opened the popper, how many people do click "dismiss
warning", how many edit the statements which has the icon and how many do not
not do one or both of these.

This can be helpful, because the relation of "doing nothing" vs. "doing
something" can be changed and it would be a positive change (at least
engagement) if people click "dismiss" or edit.

I also show a static warning message. However, I find not having it
dynamically problematic usability-wise since we do not use the word "value" in
our UI, so it is likely that people do not understand the not-dynamic message
using the term "value" (Except if they already know "Wikidata-speak", but this
is something they need to learn from others, so it is not cool for new users).

The above mockup says "remove message" which is pretty much what it does. It
does not say "the edit is fine" or an equivalent, since this would probably
need more words than I can fit on a button. Also it currently has no fixed
semantic meaning, so removing it for one user is what is happening. When we
have the 3rd milestone we need a more elaborate UI which gives some explanation
for the now shared assertion of fine/not fine, probably in a popup.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T235045: static message for warning dialog

2019-10-09 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich added a comment.

  I suggest then
"The value changed, but the reference remained the same."

However, I advise against a static warning message. We do not use the word
"value" in our UI, so it is likely that people do not understand the
not-dynamic message using the term "value".
