[Wikidata] Re: Fwd: [Talk-GB] Welsh Government is now using a Welsh-language baselayer largely based on OSM
Hi all, I led the project last year to include Wikidata on the Welsh OSM so perhaps I can answer your question. The map prioritises Welsh place names from OSM where available. We filled some of the gaps (around 5-6k I think) by pulling Welsh labels from Wikidata where OSM entries have Qid's but no Welsh name. Alongside this we did some work to add more Qid's to Welsh places on OSM but this was done manually. I've also done a lot of work to clean up Welsh settlement data on Wikidata. Andy knows the OSM community better than me but my understanding is that there is more reluctance to go for big batch edits than on Wikidata, but long term, adding more qid's to OSM (aligning the data) would be super valuable for getting the most out of the open data that is already out there, especially for mapping in smaller languages. Hi Addshore, Thanks for sharing. I'm particularly interested to see Scotland and Wales have big increases. Does the visualization only include items with co-ordinate locations? or does it also include items with place statements (place of birth, depicts ect) ? [Wikidata] Celtic Knot Wikipedia language Conference 5&6th July 2018
Hello everyone I'm excited to announce that the National Library of Wales will be hosting the Celtic Knot Conference in 2018 following the success of the first conference hosted by the University of Edinburgh last year. https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Celtic_Knot_Conference_2018 Please save the date (5-6th of July 2018) and consider attending. The main objective for Celtic Knot 2018 is the coming together of people working to support language communities in the same room at same time; strengthening the bonds into a 'knot' and leading into action. Attendees can expect to learn about and discuss innovative approaches to open education, open knowledge and open data that support and grow language communities. Please share. And look out for more information on attending and contributing in the new year. -- Jason Evans Wicimediwr Cenedlaethol/ National Wikimedian Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru / National Library of Wales jason.ev...@llgc.org.uk Ffon/Tel: +44 (0)1970 632405 ___ Wikidata mailing list Wikidata@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata
