[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T94064: Date of +0000-01-01 is allowed in wikibase but has no meaning as xsd:dateTime
mkroetzsch added a comment. Note that all current data representation formats assume that -01-01T00:00:00 is a valid representation: - XML Schema 1.1: http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema11-2/#dateTime - RDF 1.1: http://www.w3.org/TR/rdf11-concepts/#section-Datatypes - OWL 2: http://www.w3.org/TR/owl2-syntax/#Datatype_Maps Moreover, XML Schema 1.1 argues that this change was made in order to agree with existing usage, and I would agree there: many existing documents used the ISO interpretation of years even before it became official. In other words, if we want to export data to RDF, we should definitely conform with current usage and standards. I imagine that it would be easy for BlazeGraph to use either semantics if we asked for support there. Regarding the intention of SPARQL 1.1, I now have sent an enquiry to the former SPARQL WG: http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-sparql-dev/2015JanMar/0031.html which will hopefully lead to further clarification on this matter. Schnark created this task. Schnark added a subscriber: Schnark. Schnark added projects: MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseClient, Wikidata. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION Steps to reproduce: 1. Make sure that LivePreview is disabled. 2. Edit a page (using the source code editor), e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Sandboxaction=edit 3. Click Preview, look at the end of the list of links to other languages. Actual result: An unstyled (blue and big) Edit links is shown at the end of the list. Expected result: Either the Edit links shouldn't be shown at all (as it was a week ago IIRC), or at least it should be styled the same way as in normal view (gray and small and with icon). [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T93451: Data format updates for RDF export
mkroetzsch added a comment. Don't see why it would be this many. It'd be like 4 additional rows per property: I was referring to the labels. For some use cases, it could be convenient of each of the property variants would also have the rdfs:label of the property item. For example, RDF browsers will not be able to label a property variant such as :P1234q (or whatever we use) if we don't include any label for it. But including all labels (up to 300 languages) for all variants would lead to a lot of triples in the dump. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T94159: Put lastrevid of linked entities in mw.config.values.wbUsedEntities
Alphos created this task. Alphos added a subscriber: Alphos. Alphos added a project: MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseRepository. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION When viewing an entity, wbUsedEntities currently contains JSON (a string, not an actual javascript object) representing an object with all entities and some of their attributes, namely for each : - datatype (string) - descriptions (localized, as an object) - id (string, Pid for a property, Qid for an item) - labels (localized, as an object) - type (one of item, property) However, when performing an API call on a used entity using the mw.api.edit module, you should also provide the lastrevid for that entity in order to avoid edit conflicts. Gadgets currently don't check for edit conflicts : that is not sane behaviour, but they don't have much of a choice in the matter. Performing an API call to get the lastrevid would create two problems : - you have to perform an API call to get it - the lastrevid may have changed since you loaded the page, even though the current page hasn't (because it's been loaded back then) The current format of wbUsedEntities is as follows : ```{Pid:{content:{type:property,id:Pid,labels:{en:{language:en,value:Pid english label}},descriptions:[],datatype:wikibase-item},title:Property:Pid},Qid:{content:{type:item,id:Qid,descriptions:{en:{language:en,value:Qid english description}},labels:{en:{language:en,value:Qid english label}}},title:Qid}}``` Adding the lastrevid would make wbUsedEntities into : ```{Pid:{content:{type:property,id:Pid,labels:{en:{language:en,value:Pid english label}},descriptions:[],datatype:wikibase-item},title:Property:Pid, lastrevid: numeric lastrevid for Pid},Qid:{content:{type:item,id:Qid,descriptions:{en:{language:en,value:Qid english description}},labels:{en:{language:en,value:Qid english label}}},title:Qid, lastrevid: numeric lastrevid for Qid}}``` TASK DETAIL https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T94159 REPLY HANDLER ACTIONS Reply to comment or attach files, or !close, !claim, !unsubscribe or !assign username. Alphos added a comment. I did find wgCurRevisionId ;-) Too bad about wbUsedEntities being dropped, it means we're either : - facing race conditions (and potential edit conflicts) : the lastrevid of the used entities may have changed since the loading of the current page - or not caring (and potential edit conflicts), which is even worse. Alternatively, to lessen the probability of race conds (though not as efficiently as providing it straight away), it could be interesting to provide the lastrevid of an entity when performing a ##wbgetclaims## API call on it. Alphos added a comment. I'm working on a gadget that will allow you to insert by hand only one side of a relationship, and click for an automated insertion of the other side. Let me clarifiy with a real world example : - La Villette https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q532352 was a subdivision of Seine department https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1142326. - Q532352 (La Villette) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q532352 has therefore a P131 (is located in) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P131 pointing to Q1142326 (Seine) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1142326. - and Q1142326 (Seine) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1142326 has a P150 (has subdivision) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P150 pointing back to Q532352 (La Villette) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q532352. Imagine the two items exist, but their properties aren't set yet. 1. You set the P131 (is located in) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P131 property of https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q532352 (La Villette), with qualifiers and references, by hand. 2. And you have to do it again //on the other side//, setting P150 (has subdivision) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P150 on Q1142326 (Seine) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1142326 and setting the same qualifiers and references, **also by hand**. The gadget I'm creating would make step 2 shorter by having it done on the click of a button placed on the first page you edit. It will only work for one claim per click, for anything too big a batch process (bot or quick-statements) would be more appropriate. It would also make sure that a similar claim (same property pointing to the same item - the current, local item) doesn't already exist on the remote item (the one that will be automatically edited) ; if one does exist, it would only add missing qualifiers and references to it ; and it would do nothing in case several similar claims exist (performing an action would be non-trivial). The list of Wikidata property pairs that are concerned is quite extensive, and the gadget would reduce the amount of redundant actions performed by hand by users : { P361: P527, P527: P361, P301: P910, P910: P301, P155: P156, P156: P155, P460: P460, P184: P185, P185: P184, P1066: P802, P802: P1066, P1344: P710, P710: P1344, P22: P40, P25: P40, P26: P26, P451: P451, P43: P40, P44: P40, P355: P749, P1308: P39, P1478: P1536, P1536: P1478, P1479: P1537, P1537: P1479, P747: P629, P688: P702, P702, P688, P828: P1542, P1542: P828, P150: P131, P1383: P131, P47: P47, P190: P190, P398: P397, P397: P398 } It is not however a plain pair list : properties A and B may both be inversed into property C, which forbids inversing C automatically. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T94163: Delete or fix failed Wikidata browsertests Jenkins job
Tobi_WMDE_SW added a comment. Ok, first, please do not remove the Wikidata jobs, even if they are failing. There are several reasons: 1. Due to the high number of scenarios we have, there are almost every time a few tests that fail due to timeout or because of a problem with beta. Only if a scenario fails more than once in a row, we are concerned and take a detailed look. We could discuss of splitting the over-3-hours job into several smaller ones, but this is another topic. 2. sometimes when we add tests that actually fail because of a bug in the software. So this scenario will continue to fail until we fix the bug in the software (if this is in one of our components that have releases, it will only be fixed after we released a new version). 3. We are not ignoring failures at all and we are actively working on improving our browsertests. But sometimes we just don't have the resources to look at broken things immediately, so it could occur from time to time that jobs will fail for some time because they are broken. At the moment we have indeed some problems with falsely failing scenarios - all are somehow related to how our selectors (snaktype-, rank-, and badgeselector) work. We will probably not be able to look closely at those issues before Easter but we will definitely have a look once we have the resources again. So, no reason to delete those jobs, they are extremely helpful also with some failing scenarios. If you don't want them to be reported to the QA-list or the releng-channel, we could remove these notifications. Our team will be notified by email in any case. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T94179: Use callback table to handle state transitions in RdfWriterBase
daniel created this task. daniel added subscribers: Smalyshev, Aklapper, daniel. daniel added a project: Wikidata. TASK DESCRIPTION RdfWriterBase maintains a syntactic state, and triggers method calls on state transitions, so subclasses can generate the appropriate output for such transitions (e.g. TurtleRdfWriter would generate a . when going from state object to state subject, to mark the end of the previous subject). Most of these transition methods are empty, calling them just causes overhead. Instead, state transition callbacks should be places in a table, so the callback from $oldState to $newState could be found it $this-callbacks[$oldState][$newState]. If the value is a callable, it will be called. If it's false, nothing is done. If it's undefined or null, a bad state transition exception is triggered (this would happen if the fluent interface is used in an invalid sequence, like about()-about() or say()-say()). JanZerebecki added a comment. About representation of years BCE: Thank you for starting that mailing list thread. It seem that it tends towards saying that the normative thing for SPARQL 1.1 is XSD 1.1 with the reasoning that XSD 1.1 retroactively changes anything that refers to XSD 1.0 as otherwise SPARQL 1.1 Query Language and Entailment Regimes would disagree. If that remains, the question is what to do regarding implementation reality which because of Java might lean towards XSD 1.0. Implementations of XPath functions (like libxslt) and XSD validators (like libxml) are probably also relevant. Virtuoso seems to implement XSD 1.0: prefix xsd: http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema# SELECT ?date WHERE { BIND ( 0001-01-01T00:00:00^^xsd:dateTime - -0002-01-01T00:00:00^^xsd:dateTime AS ?date) } res:value datatype=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#integer;63158400/res:value = (365+366)*24*60*60 Virtuoso 22007 Error DT006: Cannot convert -01-01T00:00:00-03:00 to datetime : Incorrect year value SPARQL query: define sql:big-data-const 0 #output-format:application/rdf+xml prefix xsd: http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema# SELECT ?date WHERE { BIND ( -0001-01-01T00:00:00^^xsd:dateTime AS ?date) } Maybe we should wait on acting on this until Java XMLGregorianCalendar and libxml/xslt were changed? [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Updated] T72385: Wikidata JSON dump: file directory location should follow standard patterns
daniel added a comment. For the record: while I was proposing to have the dump flavor at the bottom of the hierarchy and putting the timestamp only into the filename, I'm coming around to the opposite view again: have the date at the base of the hierarchy. Having the date as the base makes sense if we can make sure that all the dumps in that directory consistently reflect the state of the data at the given point in time. This is infamously untrue for the standard MediaWiki dumps. We could however make it true for our dumps by generating everything off a single JSON dump, as @mkroetzsch suggested. If we want to split our RDF output into several files (terms, sitelinks, statements, etc), this consistency is essential. I think we should go that route, so I filed a ticket for implementing a script for generating RDF from JSON: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T94019. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T94224: Enable header/footer generation with RdfWriter without buffering full output.
daniel created this task. daniel added subscribers: daniel, Smalyshev. daniel added a project: Wikidata. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION RdfWriter currently does not work for generating very large output files without buffering, mainly due to how prefix/namespace declarations are handled. After some discussion with Stas, we identified the following key changes to be needed: * writer needs a method to create sub-document writers that share prefix declarations, but are not attached to the parent writer's output buffer. The method to generate such a sub-writer could be snippet(). Or sub(), with the current sub() method being moved to inline(). * it should be possible to call drain() at any time, e.g. to generate the header part of the output. drain() would make a state transition to DOCUMENT. * there should be a finish() method (for top-level writers) that would close the document (transition to the DRAIN state, which should be renamed to END), and then call drain() and return the resulting string. * prefix() can (for now) only be called on the top-level writer, and only before start() * reset() should reset declared prefixes only when called on a top level (document role) writer. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T87238: Implement an EntityPrefetcher that would take a list of entity ids and preload revision meta data about them
hoo added a comment. We had a discussion about what to do here today. Our goals were to come up with a solution that works for both cache accesses (where revision ids need to be validated) and uncached entity lookups, while maintaining easy to understand code. In order to do that, we decided to implement a functionality for preloading the meta data that we need to fetch entity content from the DB and/or to load entity content from the external storage. By only pre-loading meta data we keep the complexity manageable while still getting a huge performance boast. Also this leaves the door open for implementing a batched entity lookup. We decided to have a new `EntityPrefetcher` interface that `WikiPageEntityRevisionLookup` would consume. The interface has a method which consumes entity ids that should be pre-loaded (as they'll likely be requested). In order to get stuff fast we preload the above mentioned meta data for all entities that have been marked for preloading and cache it inside the implementation of `EntityPrefetcher`. Cache invalidation would be done by listening to `WikiPageEntityStore` on repo to catch cases where we access an entity immediately after editing it in the same thread. Other means of cache invalidation aren't needed as we already have such an in process caching on top of `WikiPageEntityRevisionLookup` in place. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T93451: Data format updates for RDF export
Smalyshev added a comment. Ah, no, that'd not be good to add so many labels. But :P1234q or q:P1234 are predicates, and RDF browsers should be able to handle predicates without labels, no? Because something like schema:about probably doesn't have any labels either. I think in general it would be nice to separate querying and labeling - i.e. query works in terms of Qs and Ps and then there's a way to get labels. But not sure if that'd help with RDF browsers. I can think of a few similar projects to this one that might be suitable for outreachy, but the deadline has already passed (March 24). There are some organizations that have extended that deadline but WMF is not one of those, see: https://wiki.gnome.org/Outreachy/2015/MayAugust#Organizations_for_which_Applications_are_Closed @Qgil, is it fair to say we can no longer accept applications for this outreachy round? Smalyshev added a comment. The lexical representation where the year fraction is 0 has undefined meaning in Wikibase, True. That's the complication - it can both be used for year before 1AD and for we don't know what year it was but it was July 4th. As we probably will implement custom date parser in BlazeGraph, we can have special handling for year 0. The question is *what* that handling should be - given the above especially. We don't want a person having born on JUly 4th unknown year show up in the list of persons born in 1 BCE. mkroetzsch added a comment. we don't know what year it was but it was July 4th Ouch. Where has this been designed? Can you point to the specification of this? @Denny, is this intended? Dates without a year are extremely hard to handle in queries and don't work at all like the normal dates we have. This should be a different datatype. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T93451: Data format updates for RDF export
mkroetzsch added a comment. All RDF tools should be able to handle resources without labels (no matter if used as subject, predicate, or objcet). But data browsers or other UIs will simply show the URL (or an automatically created abbreviated version of it) to the user. So instead of instance of it would read something like http://www.wikidata.org/entity/P31c;. Nevertheless, we can accept this for now. AFAIK there are no widely used generic RDF data browsers anyway, and it's much more likely that people will first create Wikidata-aware interfaces. mkroetzsch added a subscriber: Lydia_Pintscher. mkroetzsch added a comment. Yes, the discussion on SPARQL has converged surprisingly quickly to the view that XSD 1.1 is both normative and intended in SPARQL 1.1 (by the way, I can only recommend this list if you have SPARQL questions, or the analogous list for RDF -- people are usually very quick and helpful in answering queries, esp. if you say why you need it ;-). Your findings about Virtuoso and BlazeGraph show that it might be hard to find a conforming processor right now. However, I would still hope that it can be done, since the transformation of the values is quite easy after all. In fact, I think that neither of these projects is very likely to have customers who have cared about BCE years so far ;-). Technically, it should be not too hard: even if you use an XSD 1.0 library in most places, you could surely find an XSD 1.1 library to use with date functions, or you could transform dates internally before passing them to the XSD 1.0 operator functions. If such transformation is not efficient enough, one could also convert all input to XSD 1.0 dates on loading (or before) and then merely translate dates in queries and results accordingly (should not be a big performance issue since these datasets are rather small). However, I think it should be easy to take the few affected XPath functions from another library or to implement them directly. Julian day calculation is a very simple algorithm (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_day#Calculation), and this is all you need for date comparisons, calendar conversion, and time intervals. One way or the other, implementations will most likely have to do some custom extensions of internal date handling, unless the standard XSD libraries can cope with the age of the universe. Data publication is another issue. It's clear that we need to use XSD 1.1 when we publish RDF online, since this is what the current RDF specification requires. Applications that find our data on the web cannot know what we discussed and there is no way of telling them. They can only assume that we are using the current standard. For JSON and Wikidata internally, the main reference is probably ISO 8601 not XSD (I don't actually know what JSON says here, but usually it says nothing about things other than primitive Javascript types). I'd find it hard to explain why we would choose to deviate from that. Year has been legal in ISO for many years before Wikidata was even started. @Lydia_Pintscher recently triggered an action to review the dates stored internally in Wikidata, so this issue should probably be part of it (esp. since all BCE dates that are exact to the year should use Julian calendar). As you said, we already have year in values, and it is likely that we have other negative year numbers entered by the same bots (assuming ISO semantics). So we need to change many dates one or the other way in any case. I think most technical consumers will appreciate if we stick to ISO since it is easier to do calculations with. Moreover, now that every standard has agreed to use the same format, time is working for those who go with it.
