[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T98039: Include all incoming redirects in JSON representation of entities
daniel created this task. daniel added subscribers: Addshore, Wikidata-bugs, Bene, matej_suchanek, Lydia_Pintscher, daniel. daniel added projects: Wikidata, MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseRepository. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION Incoming redirects act as alias-IDs for entities. They should be available in the entity's JSON representation, at least in some cases: * internal (DB): no * API output: optional * JSON dumps: not in entity, but as separate non-entity entries * EntityData: always (or at least per default) Caveat: Structural inconsistency between dumps and EntityData. For JSON dumps, it's more sensible (and performant) to have redirects as separate entries, while for EntityData, we don't really have a place outside the entity itself where we could put the redirect info. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T98041: Create HtmlTermRenderer able to render TermFallback instances.
daniel created this task. daniel added subscribers: daniel, Aklapper, Lydia_Pintscher. daniel added projects: MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseRepository, Wikidata. TASK DESCRIPTION Currently, EntityIdHtmlLinkFormatter implements rendering for labels with fallback and a visible fallback hint. We need the label rendering functionality without the linking for label and description in the top area of entity pages. The relevant functionality could be factored out of EntityIdHtmlLinkFormatter into a new HtmlTermRenderer class. That class would allow the main text to be accessed separately from the hint part, to allow the main part to be linked by EntityIdHtmlLinkFormatter. Alternatively, HtmlTermRenderer could accept an optional link target for rendering the term. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T93767: Include redirects in RDF dumps
daniel added a comment. @Smalyshev: not exactly. https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T69033 calls for redirects to item X to be included in the output for item X. This ticket asks for all redirects to be present in RDF dumps. Logically, https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T69033 would imply that, but the straight forward implementation would be very inefficient (it would mean looking up redirects for each entity). Instead, we should omit that lookup in dump mode, and process redirects as they appear in the ID stream that drives the dump output. I'll edit the description to make the distinction clear. Smalyshev added a subscriber: Smalyshev. Smalyshev added a comment. I think we still need this one (or maybe different one?). The main problem still existing is that recentchanges is based on time only, not revision. We kind of work around being unable to specify the revision, since trying the same update more than once is not doing much harm (we don't do much when we discover we already have latest revid) but it's be nicer if we had proper API that allows to tell revid where we stopped. Timestamp is not a good ID for revisions since many revisions can happen at the same time. Addshore created this task. Addshore added a subscriber: Addshore. Addshore added a project: Wikidata. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION I haven't discussed this with anyone else but working as an admin it is something that I have noticed over and over again. In mediawiki the content of a page is easily identifiable using the title of said deleted page. This is not the case in Wikidata however as the title of the page is simply the items ID, eg. Q1234. Upon deletion of an item it is impossible to know what that item was about unless you, as an admin, go and review the deleted revisions of said item. It would be great if wikidata stored the labels of deleted items outside of the text body so that once deleted they could still be retreived by Mediawiki and used for redlinks etc. TASK DETAIL https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T98052 REPLY HANDLER ACTIONS Reply to comment or attach files, or !close, !claim, !unsubscribe or !assign username. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T85103: have API that shows which entities changed since a specific change instead of time
JanZerebecki added a comment. I think supporting revision for recentchanges would mean two queries, first one to find the rc_id. So how about rc_id instead? ( https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Recentchanges_table ) Now it seems that the api already supports that, via rccontinue. Example: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:ApiSandbox#action=querylist=recentchangesformat=jsonrcdir=olderrcprop=timestamp|idsrclimit=50rccontinue=20150504185236|214796318rawcontinue= The format of it is timestamp|rc_id, but the API is designed for that to be opaque, so I don't know if we may just rely on it. hoo added a subscriber: hoo. hoo added a comment. While I can see the point, I'm inclined to say that we shouldn't do this as the benefit is rather small but there are several points against this in my opinion: 1. Most Items that are still linked from somewhere should be redirects, not deleted 2. How would you then manage to fully remove a label (eg. in case of spam, vandalism, ...) without having to manually go through all languages? Not all set labels are obviously visible all the time (based on the user's language settings). 3. Implementing this is probably going to take a significant amount of time, also we'll need to adopt label lookups etc. to this. Is someone from Ops subscribed? - @Joe, can put the boxes on a dedicated subnet and make sure the other mediawiki infrastructure isn't directly routable from there? - Someone needs to check that revision deletion is working correctly. - @Manybubbles, I'm assuming you worked out all of the settings we need to set, and (maybe) implemented throttles. Smalyshev added a subscriber: Smalyshev. Smalyshev added a comment. So should there be additional type - like exact integer - for exact values? Floats are more complicated as computer floats are inherently inexact but there could be a value of exactly 0.5... OTOH, we don't even know how to represent a value of exactly 1/6. But at least integers are a frequent use case. It's possible not to make it +/- 0, but it's completely unintuitive and hard to use. Smalyshev added a comment. Query runtime caps are in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T97095. Not sure what is the status with memory and if runaway query can break that. Separating read from write queries should also be easy - all reads go through GET, all writes go through POST, so if we limit POST access via some kind of proxy, we should be fine. Since we do not save any revision but the last one, there should not be problems with deleted revisions - as soon as the change happens, the data is updated to match the current state of affairs, and the old state is forgotten. daniel added a comment. @DSGalaktos not for some reason, but because it's the scientific standard to not assume absolute accuracy per default. From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_precision: In science and engineering, convention dictates that unless a margin of error is explicitly stated, the number of significant figures used in the presentation of data should be limited to what is warranted by the precision of those data. And from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Significance_arithmetic: If a calculation is done without analysis of the uncertainty involved, a result that is written with too many significant figures can be taken to imply a higher precision than is known, and a result that is written with too few significant figures results in an avoidable loss of precision. If we want to be able to do any arithmetics with the Quantities (like unit conversion), we should not assume absolute certainty per default, since it would introduce false precision. kaldari added a subscriber: kaldari. kaldari added a comment. I also don't understand why there is any margin of uncertainty by default (or why that margin is +/-1). The default should be to assume that the number is correct. Most populations, for example, are from censuses and are exact numbers. While it's true there are some numbers that shouldn't be exact by default (elevation?), I can't think of a single case where it makes sense for the margin of uncertainty to be +/-1. Surely +/-0 is a better default. TASK DETAIL https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T68580 REPLY HANDLER ACTIONS Reply to comment or attach files, or !close, !claim, !unsubscribe or !assign username. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T68580: Better support for exact values in Quantity DataType
daniel added a comment. @kaldari: The Quantity data type is mainly intended for measured values. These are never absolutely exact. This notion becomes crucial when applying unit conversion (we'll have that Really Soon Now TM): If a building is said to be 281 feet tall, and we convert this to meters for display, the result should not be 85.6488 - that would imply a level of accuracy not present in the original value. Conventionally, 281 feet tall means 281 feet +/- 1 (or +/- 0.5 -- but that's a different discussion). With that assumption, we can say that the building is 56.7 meters tall, +/- 0.3088. This results in one significant digit after the decimal point to be included in the output, reflecting the level of accuracy in of original value correctly. The case is different for exact counts, like the numbers of electrons in an atom, or the number of seats in a parliament. But in the bigger picture, these are the exception. The impression is distorted by the fact that we sadly still don't have unit support. Introducing a separate data type for exact counts (not population!) would allow us to avoid the assumption of uncertainty for properties that typically have exact values. Existing descriptions should be rewritten. This solution would remove a use case which is currently supported in Wikidata, albeit badly, so this does not seem like a good solution to me. - Agree that usage descriptions should always go in brackets and that they can be discarded by clients who don't need them. This would necessitate duplicative code in all API clients, so also does not seem like a good solution. That said, an alternative to this would be for Wikidata to also emit a sanitised description via the API, which performs this stripping on the server, thus reducing code duplication whilst essentially performing the same function. Exposing such functionality in the PageTerms API module would likely not be hard. My feeling is that we are talking about a very small number of items here. (Happy to be proven wrong.) I think you're right about that, although I do not have numbers to back up my statement either. :-) I am not going to spend a lot of development time and add additional complexity, maintenance effort and so on for a very marginal number of items when the issue can be solved much easier and with less complexity for everyone. If a team the the WMF badly needs this, they can consider assigning their own engineers to tackle the problem. Ah, the beauty of open source! They would undoubtedly appreciate your guidance and domain knowledge as to what you believe the correct solution to be before they can do that. :-) If the Readership Team chose to tackle this themselves, which of the proposed solutions would you prefer they implement?
