Jane023 added a comment. What you are describing is a Wikipedia merge action, which is indeed common on Wikipedia for various reasons. However, that does not indicate to me that there is any need for a corresponding merge action on Wikidata, as such a merge does not mean the Wikidata items need to be merged. In the case of a Wikipedia merge, the redirect is left hanging due to a bug, but in the normal course of things, this should be deleted from the associated Wikidata item. Oddly, what you are describing as an answer to my question is considered a feature by others. I call it a kludge to get what some here want, namely a Wikidata link to a redirect. My question still stands - why would you want to merge two distinct Wikidata items to each other, if one was a person and the other is a duo? Pginer-WMF added a comment. @rasmusskjoldan thanks for your comments, here is some additional details: One of the problems we identified in our tests is that when users enabled the beta feature, it was not clear where to find the main entry point to start or continue with translations. So we want to establish contributions as the entry point where users go to create new contributions such as translations (in addition to checking what they did as it currently supports). For the particular case of this entry point, we tested two initial prototypes (on both you need to try to search for empanadas and create the page if it does not exist): one adding a banner above the content http://nirzar.github.io/prototypes/cx/create-article/a/two-create-article.html, and the other using a modal http://nirzar.github.io/prototypes/cx/create-article/b/two-create-article-b.html. We found issues in both, the first one pushed the text area down which is the main element to edit. Existing templates also contributed to that but those are controlled by the community and we cannot do much more than trying to avoid making instruction heavier. The modal version was perceived as more clear but it felt too blocking. It was hard to evaluate what to do if you cannot view all the information (and after closing the modal it was hard to revert your decision and figure out how to start a translation). As a result we decided to use a flyout similar to what we used to invite users to try the beta feature in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T89701. The goal in this case was to suggest you to translate the specific article you were about to create. If we achieve that (or a good enough guess) the plan is to show the popover immediately visible to invite the user to translate the article instead of starting from scratch. If we are not able to figure out which article the user is trying to create, inviting to translate can result in unmet expectations (e.g., the article not available in a language the user can translate from) and I'm concerned in showing it immediately visible every single time (showing it once as we do for https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T89701 can be acceptable). I am not sure we can avoid this. and that would then better inform how we might go about implementing handling of this in the new serialization code. TASK DESCRIPTION
To make sure empty maps are represented as {} and not [] in JSON, maps should
be stdclass objects, not associative arrays. This behavior should be the
default, and perhaps even be always on. We should find out if there is any use
case that requires associative arrays.

TASK DESCRIPTION For some output formats (in particular, XML as generated by ApiFormat), ID-based maps are problematic, and should be replaced by plain lists (with a tag name meta-marker set, see T78652). NOTE: Before implementing this, first investigate whether this is still needed with the overhauled ApiResult class. Perhaps just having the meta-marker set is sufficient.
