JanZerebecki added a subscriber: JanZerebecki. JanZerebecki added a comment. Adding a link at least works on test.wikpedia.org but this won't add a link for the site the link was made from. Example: On https://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blablabla i added https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hauskatze but this created the item https://test.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1734 which links to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blah instead of testwiki. Yes, it seems testwiki and test2wiki have an interesting configuration. Preferred way of testing would be unit tests that don't talk to a mediawiki installation. With what I wrote in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T58961#1718288 you would get a job with a wiki, but as Wikibase doesn't work out of the box it needs additional commands to configure. In addition you'd need another wiki as a client. So that way would be a bit more work. For local testing against a mediawiki the wikidata vagrant role should work out of the box (you get a wikifarm with an additional wikibase client wiki and repo wiki). NealMcB created this task. NealMcB added subscribers: NealMcB, Halfak. NealMcB added a project: Wikidata. NealMcB moved this task to incoming on the Wikidata workboard. Herald added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION Currently the only download option for wikidata in json format is a single gzipped file (see e.g. the files under https://dumps.wikimedia.org/wikidatawiki/entities/), which is 5.4 GB, compressed. This makes it hard to reliably get it all, or to get just a subset, or to obtain in parallel, or to mirror on other infrastructures which are designed to facilitate highly parallel downloads (e.g. clusters). In addition, 5.4 GB is too large to easily get into Amazon s3, which has a 5 GB limit for many of the most convenient forms of upload. Note that e.g. the enwiki downloads are split into up to 128 pieces, which makes it much easier to process. Halfak created this task. Halfak added a subscriber: Halfak. Halfak added a project: Wikidata. Halfak moved this task to incoming on the Wikidata workboard. Herald added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION **Request:** Currently the JSON dumps are compressed using gzip. I propose to also provide a file compressed with bzip2. **Reason:** I've been working with people who would like to process WikiData stuff in Hadoop/Spark. Inside of that environment, bzip2 is better supported than gzip because of the block compression strategy that it uses. Currently, we need to recompress json dumps in order to take full advantage of these distributed processing frameworks. It would be very helpful for us and our workflow if the dumps could be provided in a bzip2 compressed format. See http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6511255/why-cant-hadoop-split-up-a-large-text-file-and-then-compress-the-splits-using-g and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14820450/best-splittable-compression-for-hadoop-input-bz2. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T105623: [Task] Investigate quantification of quantity precision (+/- 1 or +/- 0.5)
daniel added a comment. @Jc3s5h Well, if we have additional information about the methods and tools used for the measurement, we should use them, sure. The source should state them, and we should record them. That's the simple case. But the question we are trying to answer here is what to use if we have no such information. All we have to go by is a decimal string, and some inconclusive conventions about significant digits. So, what's the best for our primary use case, namely //rounding after unit conversion//? We could 1. assume +/-0: This will introduce spurious digits (false precision), because it prevents any rounding to be applied. 2. assume +/-1: This is inconsistent with the rounding algorithm we apply ("round half away from zero"): a nominal value of 17+/-1 includes 17.9, which would round to 18. 3. assume +/-0.5: This is consistent with rounding, and does not lead to false precision. As far as I can tell, it doesn't lead to surprises. We have a bit more freedom with our second use case, comparison during queries, since uncertainty and rounding are not directly visible to the user. However, it seems prudent to use the same approach for both cases, to avoid confusion and inconsistencies.
