Discussed with @Lydia_Pintscher this morning.

- "1 February 2" is confusing. Is it the year 1 or 2?
- "February 2" is confusing. Is this February the 2nd?
- "1 February 99" can be confused with the year 1999.
- Extending the format to "1 February 2 AC" does not help much, in my opinion. 
This adds confusion because now I need to know what "AC" means and why it is 
there. It does not really solve the confusion which number is the year. You 
need to know that "2 AC" is meant to be the year, but is this really always the 
case, in all languages?
- English Wikipedia sometimes tries to solve this problem with "1 February AC 
2".
- The problem is less prominent in German, because we already format this as 
"1. Februar 2".
- In tables this is usually not a problem, because you compare rows and 
understand where the year is in "28 March 1700" and "1 February 2" and so on.
- In text this is usually solved by writing "year 2".
- `{{#time:Y|0002-02-01}}` both **requires** the input to be padded with zeros 
(otherwise it will wrongly interpret the years 0 to 69 as 2000 to 2069 and 70 
to 99 as 1970 to 1999) and pads the output with zeros. We could argue that we 
want to be consistent with that.
- When a user combines `{{#time:Y|{{#property:…` this will just work fine 
in most cases, even if it's not intended to be used like this. If the property 
parser function outputs "1 February 1999", `{{#time:Y|1 February 1999}}` 
outputs "1999". But `{{#time:Y|1 February 99}}` outputs "1999" and `{{#time:Y|1 
February 2}}`outputs "2002". All this confusion can totally be avoided by 
adding leading zeros.
- A year alone should never be padded with zeros. We think that "0002" will 
cause more confusion and friction than it is helpful.
- A possible way forward is to start working on the possibility to specify a 
date format along with the `{{#property:…}}` parser function. Or make it 
possible to combine `{{#time:…|{{#property:…` without the issue described 
above. This allows for individual case-by-case solutions when they are needed.
- Note that our current way of formatting years as straight numbers with no 
leading zeros is not backed by an existing `{{#time:…}}` format string. Only 
"y" and "Y" exist, both always output the year with a fixed length of 2 or 4 
characters. So the year 2 becomes "02" or "0002", but there is no way to output 
"2". This may need a new format string.

Yes. Right now it is hard to memorize the URL even if one sees it, and it's

Pretty much everything is, as I understand - "ontology" is the synonym for 
"graph" in OWL, so every OWL data set is an ontology, pretty much. But if you 
really feel uncomfortable with that one, I can drop the ontology part and only 
leave the OWL part.

Yes. But: 1) This ticket is only about compatibility with existing clients we 
didn't create and don't control. Those clients are conforming implementations 
of SPARQL 1.1 2) Option 2 and 3 in 
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T112151#1818392 are not defined in the SPARQL 
1.1 protocol. See 
http://www.w3.org/TR/2013/REC-sparql11-protocol-20130321/#query-operation . 3) 
That standard explicitly allows POST for read queries. (I'll spare you a long 
rant about W3C standards.)

Yeah I think babel boxes reflects better what we want. Neither of them are 
perfect. Is there a way we can combine them? Like use babelbox for everyone who 
has them and interface language for everyone else? That would be the most 
accurate but not sure if that is reasonably easy to get.

The word "ontology" has different meanings in different contexts. Here, we only 
mean the notion of "ontology" meant by the term owl:ontology as used in the W3C 
OWL standard. As Stas says, this is essentially nothing more than a OWL 
collection of OWL-compatible statements (called "OWL axioms" in the standard). 
No deeper meaning involved. See  http://www.w3.org/TR/owl2-syntax/#Ontologies 
for a definition.

Yes.  It seems I need to disable the 10 minute query timeout set here first:

A fat query like this:

to find out how many statements do not have references is currently not 
possible.

There may be a better way to ask for this, but the way that the data is coded 
does not really facilitate type joins.   An important point is that 
wikidata-todo/stats, and possibly the standing perception of the data, assumes 
an iterable hierarchy.  But RDF does not make hierarchy.  So an Item does not 
"contain" statements, and statements do not "contain" references.

The relationship between statements and references is difficult to query by 
type, because a binding triple looks like this:

prov:wasDerivedFrom   wdref:39f3ce979f9d84a0ebf09abe1702bf22326695e9

Note that simply counting the frequency of 
http://www.w3.org/ns/prov#wasDerivedFrom and comparing that to the frequency of 
wikibase:Statement would provide a kind of global ratio that is a fast and easy 
alternative to counting individual statements without references.

I am rebuilding wdm-rdf now with the new Munger and no query timeout.

Also, I will load the dump from 17 November, so that the updater has some 
chance to sync.  It had fallen back to 14 days old, and I doubt that it would 
ever have caught up.

I find this approach very odd, do not understand why it would be a good idea, 
and am generally quite worried about it.

My main concern is pretty much described by the first paragraph of @mkroetzsch 
his first post. I've read through the replies, though found the reasoning in 
there to generally be either besides the point, or lacking actual depth such as 
"I did something like this before and it did not work well".

As I've pointed out before, it makes no sense to me starting to discuss this on 
the premise we need one global solution for this. Looking at individual 
problems we need to solve and what the best solution is for those seems like a 
much better approach. Similarly, the need for deferred deserialization has not 
been demonstrated to me. I can see how it can be helpful in theory, though am 
missing the concrete places of where this would be, and why for each of those 
cases the deffered approach is best. "Trust me, I already thought about it, and 
came to this conclusion, no need to re-examine it" is not an acceptable 
starting point if you want me to reason up from it.

A second concern I have is a combination of this approach ticking off several 
design warning boxes and me not having seen anything in this direction used or 
justified for a usecase like this anywhere. That by itself does not mean the 
approach is bad, though it certainly adds to my worry.

This saves the caller from writing an if check, at the cost of passing a type 
as string and having the role manager do the check? I think that's a bad 
trade-off, and certainly not big enough of a good thing to warrant the 
additional complexity proposed here.

Those reviewers talked about having a response model that you can give to a 
presenter. That is very different from that you are proposing here.

PS: I do not think it is a good idea to start a discussion on if a particular 
pattern is suitable for ones usecase by listing a bunch of big names that have

I messed up a deploy about a month ago, preventing the change merged here: 
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/244465/ to actually being applied.
I will:

- bump refinery-core and refinery-hive (> 0.0.19) and update refine oozie job
- deploy refinery with these new jar and new refine
- restart refine process
- document (wikitech webrequest, research pageview)

However, it is also returning "Wellington Monument, Glasgow",  a previous value 
that was changed on 16th November (diff

It can go away, if the property value is deleted & then re-created -- eg 
Q17535092, Q17532740, Q17551225, which all did have spurious duplicates, but 
are now fine since I have edited them a few minutes ago.

Not sure if this is the same issue as the thing that specifically affects 
labels, or whether this is a different case of updates being dropped (eg when 
the server was under pressure).

Caching SPARQL results via Varnish is not a good idea in most cases. For two 
reasons:

1. Usually the same query is not repeated very often (unless somebody has a 
buggy script, etc.). Every client would run its own query and once the result 
is returned, it will go away and another client would use another query.
2. When the query **is** repeated, it is usually because the client expects 
something to change - like getting update from Wikidata. Since we do not have 
any real way to invalidate Varnish when underlying data changes, caching here 
would only hinder the clients.

Also, these results can be pretty big - so we'd be storing tons of information 
which is not useful. Of course, there are exceptions and some scenarios would 
still benefit from caching, but most would not.

There are no plans of multi-DC setup for WDQS, as far as I know.

We do not need a general solution for the whole HTTP world. We need a 
particular solution for specific practical issue, and we have everything we 
need to actually solve it - except willingness to solve it.

I think in this particular case it is exactly that, as all objections so far, 
when applied to what happens with WDQS, appear to be only theoretical.

All proposed solutions require creating a whole new middleware layer, and I 
don't think anybody is ready to allocate resources to develop and maintain this 
layer.

Not all of those are open source projects, and they would not spend resources 
on rewriting their tools just because one particular endpoint (ours) does not 
support POST. Also, who exactly would be spending time on learning these tools, 
developing and submitting those patches?

In light of this i have quickly thrown up 
https://grafana.wikimedia.org/dashboard/db/wikidata-query-service-draft

Just looking at the metric names it seems we count total 'done' queries that I 
can only assume means queries that finished successfully, as well as total 
error count.
Queries per second is also stored.

I feel like having errors per second and completed queries per second may be 
more valuable than counters here.
But guess this covers what was written above in the task!

I'll dive into this all a bit more tommorrow

@Addshore btw, WDQS collects a bunch of data through graphite, including 
performance metrics, etc. and can be made to collect more if needed. I never 
had time/requirements to organize it nicely, but if somebody wants to do it, 
I'd be glad to help.

  As an experienced SPARQL user I want to quickly find the actual URL of the 
SPARQL endpoint 
(https://query.wikidata.org/bigdata/namespace/wdq/sparql?query={SPARQL}) so I 
can use it in my regular tools instead of the web interface.
  
  Right now the link is hidden in a long documentation page. It should be 
prominently linked on query.wikidata.org. Github does this nicely with the repo 
URLs in the web interface. Users can easily find the repo URL to then clone the 
repository on the command line.
