I'm aware that according to https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property_talk:P625, "Single value: this property generally contains a single value". Multiple coordinates originate from importing coordinates from different Wikipedias or when merging two Wikidata items. Not taking any coordinate is bad since the item cannot be found via geosearch (or https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Nearby). I'm not sure whether one should take the first value or all values instead. This used to be a debug log entry, not a production warning. Aaron changed this to a warning in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/298240/1 which got merged a week ago, on July 15. So the situation isn't new, the logging is. I'm not sure why Aaron changed this. As far as I understand, it is in the nature of automatic transactions to be flushed in such a situation. EDIT DETAILS...The problem is all languages which use things such as a superscript in the standard writing of some terms, for instance in French the numbering for royalty and nobility starts "Ier" (feminine "Ire") with the "er" ('re') part in superscript. Streets called "rue [[ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_I_of_France | François Ier ]]" always have a superscript "er" on the street sign and there is no other way to write it in French, "Ier" without a superscript would look like a non-existing name or word "ier". There is now an experimental API end point for wiktionary definitions at https://en.wiktionary.org/api/rest_v1/?doc#!/Page_content/get_page_definition_term This API is used by the Android app to provide definitions for words using wiktionary data, but it is currently only available for the English Wiktionary. T138709 discusses ways to expand coverage to other languages by adding standard markup to consistently identify specific components of the definitions. aaron added a comment. Premature commits like this make multi-DB transactions less safe. Only Job/DeferrableUpdate/Maintenance code should be flushing transactions. daniel added a comment. @aaron If I interpret what you say correctly, that means that we should not use automatic transactions in web requests at all, at least none that write. I suggest to have a larger discussion about the appropriate use of transactions, on wikitech-l or as an RFC. In the past, automatic transactions were (ab)used as a kind of write buffer, while use of transactions to achieve atomic updates was rare. It seems like you want to change that. Other reasons for failure is timeouts.
