I believe a puzzle piece is a no-go in our environment:

Firefox uses it for plug-ins.
VisualEditor uses it for templates.
The Wikipedia logo is a ball of puzzle pieces.
A dozen other logos derive from that, see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_puzzle_piece_icons, most notably https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_logos.

2016-09-05 Thread Smalyshev
Smalyshev added a comment.
True, these are the issues. This is why I propose the two-stage scheme, where units config file is generated from Wikidata statements, but this should be done very rarely once initial version is created. Mostly updates will be only new unit additions, and changing existing unit should require good explanation.

Yes, this means we need to reload whole data set (or at least quantity statements, which is not much better) when we change unit conversion tables - excepting the case where new conversions/units are added (in this case, only statements using these units need to be reloaded and existing statements do not need to be changed).

Also, this means the conversion config would not really be synchronized with Wikidata data as such. I don't think it is a very big issue.

Until we have per-property permissions, I don't think direct usage of Wikidata properties is a good thing.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T117032EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: SmalyshevCc: TomT0m, gerritbot, Smalyshev, Aklapper, daniel, aude, mschwarzer, MelodyKramer, Avner, debt, Gehel, D3r1ck01, Jonas, FloNight, Xmlizer, Izno, jkroll, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, Deskana, Manybubbles, Mbch331___

The problem is that it could then also be changed and deleted with no privileges at all. What should happen when a statement specifying a conversion factor is edited? Shall we re-import the entire RDF dump into the query service?

Changes that have big impact should not be too easy... We'd have to implement per-property permissions, or per-statement protection, before we could allow this. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Edited] T107595: [RFC] Multi-Content Revisions

2016-09-05 Thread daniel
daniel edited the task description. (Show Details)
EDIT DETAILS**(proposal rewritten 20152016-09-1805)**

The idea of this RFC is to allow multiple Content objects to be associated with a single revision (one per "slot"), resulting in multiple content "streams" for each page. The "main" slot being reserved for the primary content of the page (that is, for what is currently considered the content of the page).

The RFC is structured to first give an overview in the sections [[#Use Cases and Rationale| Use Cases and Rationale]] and [[#Concepts and Principles|Concepts and Principles]], and then goes on to provide an outline of the implementation, roughly structured in three levels. These levels can be implemented incrementally, each providing additional functionality and flexibility.

== Use Cases and Rationale ==
The idea is to provide a mechanism for associating multiple (independant or interdependent) Content objects (generally of different types) for each page (and reach revision of each page). This allows for greater flexibility with regards to what MediaWiki can store and manage where. It effectively adds another dimension to the revision management system, providing a standard mechanism for "attaching" derived or editable data to a page.

Potential use cases:
* HTML rendering(s) - instead of the parser cache.
* A "blame map" for tracking authorship on the word level
* categories etc. maintained as structured, user editable data outside the wikitext
* lead image and focus area maintained as structured, user editable data
* Structured meta-data for media files (on file description pages)
* Media file streams could be managed in the same way (see {T96384})
* Expanded versions of templates used on the page; this would allow re-rendering just these blobs, and the dependant HTML rendering, when the template changes.

The approach described below revolves around managing several Content objects per revision, organizing them into "slots". This approach is distinct from the idea of supporting multi-part content blobs, which would use MIME-Multipart or a similar encoding to combine multiple content objects into one master object. Multi-content revisions have two advantages:
# they are more flexible and more efficient with respect to blob storage (different storage machanisms can be used for different kinds of content).
# they avoid breaking changes to APIs the allow access to raw page content, by presenting the content of "main" slot there per default. Attempting the same with multi-part revisions would lead to round-trip issues when only the main part of the content gets posted back from an edit.

== Concepts and Principles ==

=== Addressing ===
* Each Revision has named "slots". Each slot may contain a Content object.
* There are three types of slots:
** primary: user created content that can be edited (wikitext, structured data, etc)
** derived: information derived from the user created content and stored along with it (e.g. diffs, blame map, rendered HTML)
** virtual: information derived from the user created content on the fly, and is not stored. Virtual slots are always also "derived".
* There is always at least one primary slot defined: the "main" slot. It will be used in all places that do not explicitly specify a slot. This is the primary backwards compatibility mechanism.
* Primary slots can be enumerated. The link between a revision ID and the associated primary slots is maintained in the main database. Listing all primary slots is needed to create diffs, generate XML dumps, perform revert/undo, etc.
* Derived slots cannot be enumerated. The link between a revision ID and the associated derived slots may be stored in the database, or in some other place, or may be purely programmatic.
* Each slot name, except the main slot, is associated with a content model to be used with that slot (per default).
** Slot names may be suffixed to allow multiple "sub-slots", all with the same storage backend and content model. E.g. there could be an "html" slot with one sub-slot per language, e.g. "html.de", "html.nl", etc.
* The content model to use for the main slot is determined based on the page title (namespace, extension), just like we already do.
* TBD: we need a name for the history of a page regarding a specific slot. "stream"? "facet"?
* Slots can be referenced by revision ID and slot name. Streams can be referenced by page title(+namespace) and slot name.
** TBD: we may need a "closed" representation in a single string. For page titles, we could use "namespace:title##slot" or "namespace:title||slot".
* Which slots are available for a given page may be configured per namespace, or per content model of the main slot (which in turn would typically be based on the namespace)
* There is metadata associated with each slot. Namely:
** content-model
** touch-date (null for virtual slots)
** in practice, there would also be a blob URL and a serialization format associated with any non-virtual slot. But that

2016-09-05 Thread Sjoerddebruin
Sjoerddebruin created this task.Sjoerddebruin added projects: Wikidata, MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseRepository.Herald added a subscriber: Aklapper.
TASK DESCRIPTIONAt certain moments, I enter a wrong alias because the browser displays previous entered values for these input fields. The chance that a user needs to add the exact same alias to a lot of items is very small (correct me if I'm wrong). Should this be disabled (and how, I've read that there were some browser changes around this subject)?TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T144765EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: SjoerddebruinCc: Sjoerddebruin, Aklapper, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T144764: Abbreviate GROUP_CONCAT result IRIs

2016-09-05 Thread WikidataFacts
WikidataFacts created this task.WikidataFacts added a project: Wikidata-Query-Service.Herald added a subscriber: Aklapper.Herald added projects: Wikidata, Discovery.
TASK DESCRIPTIONThe WDQS UI turns IRIs in results into links, and also abbreviates IRIs that point to Wikidata to just the Q#. It would be awesome if this also worked for GROUP_CONCATenated results. Here’s a minimal example query to try it out:

SELECT (GROUP_CONCAT(?p) AS ?ps)
WHERE { VALUES ?p { wd:Q692 wd:Q5682 } }

Query link

Currently, this abbreviation is done based on the data type of the result. For a simple GROUP_CONCAT, that type is always “string”, so that won’t work. I see several possible solutions:

Detect that a result column is based on a GROUP_CONCAT where the original values had the IRI datatype. This is probably impossible, since the original values might have had different datatypes, and the individual results are never returned by the query.
Detect that a result column is based on a GROUP_CONCAT and the individual values look like IRIs. That is, break down the _expression_ for a column until you arrive at a GROUP_CONCAT, extract the separator (default: space), split up the result column, and see if the individual results start with well-known protocols like http:// or https://. Since aggregate expressions and other expressions can be very freely mixed (e. g.: CONCAT(GROUP_CONCAT(?x), " ", GROUP_CONCAT(?y))), this is probably still very difficult.
Detect that a result column looks like a GROUP_CONCAT of IRIs with the default separator “space”. This is probably fairly easy to do, but also fragile because it’s possible that the result isn’t actually what we interpret it as. (Note, however, that IRIs cannot contain spaces, so the splitting up itself is safe.)
Make IRI(GROUP_CONCAT(?x)) work: like 3, but only when the result has the type IRI. In this case, the query author explicitly annotated the column as IRI, so it’s not our problem if the original values were IRIs or not. However, this is fairly obscure – I don’t imagine many users will think to try IRI() when they see that just GROUP_CONCAT doesn’t give them pretty links.

Currently, IRI(GROUP_CONCAT(?x)) results already receive the IRI treatment – it just doesn’t work correctly, since the results aren’t split up. Example query:

SELECT (IRI(GROUP_CONCAT(?p)) AS ?ps)
WHERE { VALUES ?p { wd:Q692 wd:Q5682 } }

Query link

The result column looks like this: “🔍 wd:Q692 http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q5682” – only the first IRI was abbreviated, and the links includes all the other IRIs.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T144764EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: WikidataFactsCc: Aklapper, WikidataFacts, mschwarzer, MelodyKramer, Avner, debt, Gehel, D3r1ck01, Jonas, FloNight, Xmlizer, Izno, jkroll, Smalyshev, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Deskana, Manybubbles, Mbch331___

Hi, maybe I come after the battle, but if you're not aware of this, Wikidata has now a "conversion to SI unit" that could come valuable for this as it stores the value of the configuration file.

Maybe instead of this configuration we can make the mechanism more flexible by just specifying such a property on the database. The set of unit supported by the export could then be extended with no privilege at all.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T117032EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: TomT0mCc: TomT0m, gerritbot, Smalyshev, Aklapper, daniel, aude, mschwarzer, MelodyKramer, Avner, debt, Gehel, D3r1ck01, Jonas, FloNight, Xmlizer, Izno, jkroll, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, Deskana, Manybubbles, Mbch331___

I doubt it's implemented like that. Both the number of items with at least one statement (20,964,244) and the number items with at least one sitelink (20,338,226) are higher than the current returned value by the parser function (20,023,628). I find this tasks description oddly confusing. At the moment this ticket is non-actionable. It does not even describe if there is an actual issue to solve or not. Is the current method not sufficient? Do you have more specific examples? How do you suggest to improve the situation? What would be the goal of such an improvement? How do we measure if a change is a success or not?

Note that there are already multiple tickets about switching to CirrusSearch. I wonder what this ticket is about, what's not already covered and discussed in the parent task T142940 and the subtasks T58763 and T99897? I believe the dependency chain is a bit derailed: The new parser function must be implemented first before we can teach it specific things. So it must be a blocker for T58763, for example.

TASK DESCRIPTIONI just went through https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T123529 and think its focus on URLs as a way to provide hashtag functionality is one way that could be useful for supporting campaigns involving Wikidata, where most manual edits do not currently have hashtag functionality (thus precluding campaigns like 1Lib1Ref on Wikidata), and tool-based Wikidata edits are tagged by tool only.

A range of other ways could be thought of:

A dedicated set of tools (e.g. as used in https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Menu_Challenge/participants ) but more easily deployable by others
Some abstraction of verbal descriptions as in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Computational_Biology/ISCB_competition_announcement_2016
Something tied to a specific set of items/ properties/ references/ constraints
Something tied to hashtags in other ways, e.g. as per https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Education_Program

I would also love to suggest an other super-trivial solution for this issue: We should change the error message shown on https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:GoToLinkedPage/enwiki/Q24779484 to have a well visible, clickable link to the item page. The relevant message key is "wikibase-gotolinkedpage-error-page-not-found".TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T144584EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: thiemowmdeCc: thiemowmde, Lucie, TerraCodes, Lydia_Pintscher, Aklapper, Karima, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, jayvdb, Ricordisamoa, TheDJ, Mbch331, Jay8g___

I believe this is about being notified when something on wikidata.org changed that might affect a local article you are watching. With this in mind, here are some possible icon ideas:

A puzzle piece would be nice, because what changed is literally one of the pieces the article is made of. But puzzle piece icons are used way to often.
Just a "D" for data.
Meta data is often visualized with a label or badge.
When searching for "piece" I find chess pieces as well as a piece of cheese and cake. Might be an idea.

2016-09-05 Thread thiemowmde
thiemowmde triaged this task as "Low" priority.thiemowmde added a comment.
I totally agree that there is a lot of room for improvement. However:

I believe this is something that can not be expressed with a "standard" icon. It's an icon for one reason: We want this button to be as small as possible because it is not needed very often.
What bugs me the most is that the two icons are so similar. This was worse before I redesigned them, see https://twitter.com/maettig/status/722360746991071232.
I'm open for new labels for the three things. But I did not understood your comment above.
Moving the icon to the end does have two issues:
There is no input box in two of the three modes.
We want to reserve this space for other things, e.g. validation and error indicators.
