I've benchmarked the above query very briefly (picked db1092 for that, all queries were run five times in a row(!)).

Original query

Can you elaborate? I don't quite understand what you are proposing. Title is already a first-class entity, that's what the page table is. But that is per-wiki.  What we need here is cross-wiki.

Are you proposing to use  numeric IDs instead of title strings, even for pages that do not exist? That's worth considering. I have done this before on occasion, for instance for my thesis. Maintaining the mapping is a pain, though. I found that using a 64 bit hash of the title is a better solution than auto-increment: the mapping is implicit at least in one direction, and collisions are nearly impossible.

Do you mean the global lookup table for cognate should be blocked on having a numeric representation for titles, to reduce the need for space? Actually, we could immediately use 64 bit hashes for the normalized keys... all we are interested in is equality anyway. That could work.

But what does this have to do with  page_assessment? e.g. Czech wiktionary has proverbs as sentence

As you said, Special:GoToLinkedPage redirects and does not output HTML (except for the form, which is a single page, and the reason why Disallow: /wiki/Special:GoToLinkedPage should not be used). The target pages of these redirects are Wikipedia articles. They should be indexed, and they already have canonical tags.

I'm not sure what an X-Robots-Tag will do when used with a redirect.


I believe there is no point in crawling Special:GoToLinkedPage URLs, because they are guaranteed to do nothing but redirect to Wikipedia articles. We know each redirect represents a sitelink, and sitelinks are already accessible on the ordinary item page. We know all this. Google does not.
Similar for Special:ItemByTitle, which redirects to a Wikidata item. The exact same links already exist in the sidebars of the connected Wikipedia articles.


@Mbch331, please add the following lines to https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Robots.txt:

Disallow: /wiki/Special:GoToLinkedPage?
Disallow: /wiki/Special:ItemByTitle?
Disallow: /wiki/Special:SetSiteLink?

Do not remove the slashes, because this would exclude the special page forms itself. This also applies to qualifiers.

We need to make the ordering for references and qualifiers similar to the ordering of statements so that we can improve the readability of items. Discussed with @Lydia_Pintscher today. We tried what Facebook does right now, and it does find title and description since T88475. The only thing missing is the image. We decided we will only add og:image.

To be sure I actually tested this and found that Facebook is happy with this minimum:

I did the same test with Twitter and found that Twitter requires this minimal subset:

The docs give the impression twitter:site is required, but it's not.
Twitter indeed does recognize Open Graph.


But these four tags are required. The moment you remove one, Twitter will not render a nice card any more. You can not replace og:title with the classic . You can not replace og:description with the classic meta description. FYI: you disallowed crawling, that doesn't mean you disallowed indexing for modern search engines. If another indexed page links to the url, that google will still index it.

To quote

When you block URLs from being indexed in Google via robots.txt, they may still show those pages as URL only listings in their search results. A better solution for completely blocking the index of a particular page is to use a robots noindex meta tag on a per page bases. You can tell them to not index a page, or to not index a page and to not follow outbound links by inserting either of the following code bits in the HTML head of your document that you do not want indexed.

This why we have NOINDEX and setRobotPolicy on OutputPage etc..  it's just that these are redirects and/or not necessarily HTML. That's why i pointed at X-Robots-Tag.

This is a very valid concern. Thanks a lot for the reminder, @TheDJ. I was hoping that Open Graph is what it claims to be: open, and not exclusive to Facebook. We should validate this first (relevant Stack Overflow: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10397510/do-services-other-than-facebook-use-open-graph).

Main main pro argument still is: Wikidata items are perfect to be represented as Twitter cards and such.

Additionally, I suggest to start with the image, and only with the image.
