@MZMcBride, while generic JSON content handler could support nested data structure, the whole idea behind tabular content handler is to provide a simple tabular format with each cell being a single value, with the exception of multi-lingual string values, which store key (lang code) => string objects. This should cover the vast majority of the usecases -- in-article tables, lists, data for graphs.

I'm not sure a .tab file extension is needed. I actually thought T120452: Allow structured datasets on a central repository (CSV, TSV, JSON, GeoJSON, XML, ...) was about storing XML, CSV, TSV, JSON, etc. in wiki pages, but looking at http://data.wmflabs.org/w/index.php?title=Data:Sample.tab&action=""> I'm a lot less sure now.

While we don't have to use .tab, it would help because we won't need to create a new namespace for each new data type, reusing Data namespace instead. Namespace prolifiration has been a constant complaint by many users. Also, I do not want to support multiple storage types, especially the notoriously bad CSV/TSV. Better provide an easy import/export functionality for them. Another type that has already been implemented and is undergoing some discussion is storing .geojson - map overlays. We could eventually introduce .json, but we have to be very clear what usecases it will solve.

The discussion about data types and constraints in this task makes me worry that we're slowly inventing yet another database engine when we already have options such as SQLite.

While it would be awesome to provide a large custom database support, the current proposal is limited to small tables, such as replacing the lists and tables we already have in many articles with a cross-wiki sharable, structured, Lua and graph accessible system. Which means it will not have any SQL-like functionality such as sorting/filtering via API, but rather allow Lua modules or Graph extension to read the table as a whole and process it as needed.

What are the storage considerations/implications for Wikimedia wikis here? Every time an edit is made to a table cell, we'd then be saving a full copy of the page? Will users download and manipulate up to 2 MB of text in a textarea, or even heavier, an enhanced textarea featuring syntax highlighting?

Currently, when users update a table in an article (even one cell), a full save is made. For now, this feature will follow the same model of multiple edits + one save action. Much further in the future we may introduce a more powerful backend (sqlite/...) that would handle per-cell edits, but clearly this would be by far more involved. I do not think there will be such a massive increase in data pagees as compared to the regular wiki articles, especially since data will be usable by multiple wikis.

There are very valid and important reasons that we have pagination, offsets, and limits with data sets. Will these three features be supported with wiki pages?

@Nikki something like ?item ?prop ?statement  is almost always a bad idea, unless you put filters on ?prop and ?statement later. Original one didn't, though the new one does.

Combining statements is not always obvious, and sometimes query optimizer takes wrong turn. We're working on how to make it smarter. However, when you're trying to develop a new query, putting LIMIT on it is not a bad idea, until you're sure it's not going to run away.

If you want people to avoid queries which return a large amount of data, it would help to actually show how big the response is and whether it's considered excessive.

That property has only been used about 4000 times, I didn't expect that to translate into ridiculous amounts of data. I don't want or need ten million entries, this isn't even the query I actually wanted results from.

What I was trying to do was get statements with no references for a couple of thousand items. It sounded like it would be pretty straightforward, select some items, select their statements, filter out any with a reference... but apparently not, since my queries kept timing out. I simplified the query and simplified it some more, tried different properties, etc, trying to work out what was causing it to time out. Then suddenly I got to this query and it just said "Unknown error". Up until that point, the queries (excluding the more complicated ones which were timing out) had been returning results within a few seconds and my browser had been having no problems displaying the results so it didn't seem problematic.

I don't see any indication of how large (in kB/MB) a particular response is. If you want people to avoid queries which return a large amount of data, it would help to actually show how big the response is and whether it's considered excessive. If someone does accidentally produce a query which returns too much data, it would better (and more effective) to show an error message saying it produced too much data rather than "Unknown error".

As for what I was originally trying to do, this isn't my original query, but it's a simple demonstration of the problem I was having:
This query returns results in a few seconds but returns lots of stuff I don't want. This query returns results in a fraction of a second. Put them together like this and it times out. As I wrote in T116298 about a completely different query which behaves in the same way, this makes no sense to me.

I don't think it is necessary to move the repo, but I think it would be nice to have a real machine not just FTP.

So I would like to setup a machine and then change the CNAME for wikiba.se to this machine.

Why not show the button, even if there is no label in the local wikis language? A popup appears, asking for a title. The default can be empty. The only reason I can think of to not have this button is to enforce people to edit Wikidata first. Personally I don't think this is good.

Yeah, we should probably do this.

The button also disappears if the article is protected. But this check is done using the current label, not the title the user is going to enter in the dialog. This appears to be wrong. However, I can think of a reason why this behavior is good: If a local community decided to block an item for creation, based on the label the item haves, no article should be created, not even with a different title.

Does our dialog tell that the page is protected and another name needs to be found? If not, we should change that. Either way, I think the button should also appear in these cases.

It is a breaking change to the FORMAT_WIKI output indeed. But given this is not used by us anywhere currently, the impact is null.

@Nikki As a side note - please avoid running queries like "give me ten million entries", unless you really really really need it. It most probably would not be stable, and it creates load on the service that makes harder for others to use it - we're still running on only two machines. And you browser may not be happy loading several hundred megs of JSON into memory either.

This particular query produces hundreds of megabytes of data. I don't really consider doing such thing a recommended use case for the service - if you really need data to the tune of several hundred megs, processing dump is the best venue for now. Note that the page does have the title "About topic", because the Item does not have an Esperanto label. Because of how the code is currently arranged (see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/diffusion/EARP/browse/master/includes/AboutTopicRenderer.php;19a73e13220453c4ba9d012b3515e9e36b36297c$101), the "Create an article" button is not shown.


Why not show the button, even if there is no label in the local wikis language? A popup appears, asking for a title. The default can be empty. The only reason I can think of to not have this button is to enforce people to edit Wikidata first. Personally I don't think this is good.
The button also disappears if the article is protected. But this check is done using the current label, not the title the user is going to enter in the dialog. This appears to be wrong. However, I can think of a reason why this behavior is good: If a local community decided to block an item for creation, based on the label the item haves, no article should be created, not even with a different title.

For "no value" I think this makes sense. I think for "unknown" value we do want to return "unknown" because that is potentially important information.

@Magnus, I followed the relevant code path in EditEntity, but could not find an obvious mistake there. Also, this code did not changed for two months.

The sitelinks you provide can contain a site, title and optional badges for each sitelink. You can also provide a remove key to delete a sitelink. This is optional. You can do the same by providing an empty title, or by not having both title and badges keys. Only provide a site and it will be deleted.

This is actually what happens in your case, when you remove the badges. There is no title (you used "value" instead), so it gets deleted.

The error message (the message key is wikibase-api-no-such-sitelink) is shown when you provide badges but no title. This is also expected, considering your "value" mistake.

I believe you made a mistake in your code, therefore I'm closing this as invalid. beta is an unstable environment and will have random failures from time to time. However the Authority Control failure is something I can reproduce with my browser: https://wikidata.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Q12480?debug=true sometimes just fails to fully load JS/Gadgets.

What's more important is, that tests on test.wikidata.org are running fine now. we can only provide this functionality for entity types where we know how to programmatically construct the entity id serialization from the entity-type and the numeric entity id.

We do know this for all entity types that provide an entity-id-composer, see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/diffusion/EWBI/browse/master/WikibaseMediaInfo.entitytypes.php;a9a53ac3ffb8d1470cec5813ed641cca76484eac$101. You can get this via WikibaseRepo::getDefaultInstance()->getEntityIdComposer(). Just to re-explain this, because I think it might not have been clear enough before:

Currently we join the wb_entity_per_page table against the wb_terms table (term_entity_id = epp_entity_id AND term_entity_type = epp_entity_type).
After this change, we will join the page table against the wb_terms table. Given the wb_terms table only has the entity type and the numeric entity id, we will need to use REPLACE() in SQL for this join (term_entity_type = "known-entity-type" AND term_entity_id = REPLACE(page_title, 'known-entity-prefix', '')). When using Wikidata Query Service, sometime I make too big requests (for instance give me all P31 = Q5) and my computer go freezing.
Couldn't there be a way to stop a request when you see that it will go in timeout before the computeur freeze ?
