This will no longer be the case when we use xkey throughout the system. CdnCacheUpdate would then purge a key (or a list of keys), nut URLs. Instead, when serving the content of the URLs, we have to unclude the key in the response, so we can later use it for purging.

So, whenever RESTbase serves a URL, it has to know which key(s) to should put into the header. That's conceptually the same as declaring which resources (keys) your response depends on.

I don't see a way to do any of this with the existing CdnCacheUpdate interface. That's why I said Since purging based on tags is quite different from purging based on URIs, it's not easy to invent a nice service interface for this.

My current Idea is that for now, we support only one kind of resource that things can depend on: page content, identified by a title. When purging, we tell the CDN manager what title we want to purge. It can then purge a key, or determine a list of URLs to purge - that would be encapsulated in the service that knows about the capabilities of the CDN. Both patches have been removed from the chain, and T148626 got closed without ever looking back at these two patches. Both patches are still blocked with -1, but no clear way forward.

These patches represent technical depth: I build a chain of patches that introduced not-so-nice workarounds, and immediately solved this in the next patches in the same chain. But this got kicked out, just leaving bad code, which we decided (?) to ignore since then.

I started an alternative approach, but nobody cared either:

EDIT DETAILSDispatching (a.k.a.) multiplexing services should be used in repo-agnostic services instead of local-repo-specific ones that have been used so far.This is a general ticket for using servics allowing to access entities from multiple repositories in Wikibase client. Tickets for more specific implementations related tasks should be created as subtasks.

General structure/notes:
 * ClientStore implementation is not changed,
 * existing ClientStore implementation, ie. DirectSqlStore should be using dispatching versions of services instead of single-repo ones it uses now
 * factory of services should be created for providing list of service instances for creating dispatching services to DirectSqlStore.
 * This factory would have a public interface partly reminding the one of ServiceContainer, ie. it would have a generic method getServiceMap (name is subject to change) returning a map in form [ repoName => service ] of services configured for particular repository. It could also have convenience getters for particular services.
 * the factory class would have a required configuration of foreign repositories (what repos are configured, what are DB names, URLs etc)
 * there should be class extending ServiceContainer that will be returning all services for a single repository. This container will use wiring file instantiating actual service classes
 * ServiceMapFactory would use a RepositoryServiceContainer for each repo to generate a service map


Implementation notes:...* the ability to load e.g. labels for entities on another repo will be needed by repo code, not just client code. We will have to re-consider the relationship between repo and client once more.

I plan to introduce such infrastructure into core, modeled around this use case and the per-language-url use case. I have some ideas, but I'm not yet sure what exactly it will look like.

As to RESTbase: once MediaWiki sends out xkey purges, all RESTbase needs to do is to tag responses with the appropriate xkey headers.
