EDIT DETAILSFor some reason, I ended up with several browser tabs that all had `?uselang=en-US` query param. Attempting to add a statement failed to show any suggestions until I manually removed the query param from the URL.  Very confusing.  I tried it in Chrome (logged in) and Firefox (not logged in), with the same result. There were no other statements on the item when i tried it, but not sure if that's relevant.  Setting language to English would reload the page but wouldn't solve the problem.

Normal issues


Use sha256 (or some other modern hash) instead of md5. Even in contexts where the attacks against it is not important we should be phasing out md5.


Issues of unclear severity

64-bits is not enough for collision resistance against a malicious adversary. If I have my math right (It is very possible that I mixed this up) There are 5 million (~2^22) titles on enwiktionary. 2^64/2^22 = 2^42. Based on googling, a 4 GPU system can do roughly 2^33 hashes/second. 2^42/2^33 = 2^11 seconds ~ half an hour to find a collision. So a vandal could make malicious page titles that collide with titles on enwiktionary, for the purpose of vandalism via the lang links. I'm not sure how serious an issue this is. Its clearly a lot more work for less disruption than most forms of vandalism, but it could be confusing to users who wouldn't understand what's going on.

I think it may be an acceptable risk, but users should be consulted about the possibility before the extension is enabled. The risk should also be documented.

Alternatively the risk could be prevented by using autoincrement ids (would require storing both the normalized and raw title though) or by increasing the size of the hash to 128 bits (e.g. Having two BIG INT fields and joining on both)

Minor issues


line 68 of populateCognatePages.php Its preferred to use the MW DB abstraction layer instead of hand constructing sql where possible (instead of "page_namespace IN " . ..., do "page_namespace" => $namespaces).


Non-security issues


CacheUpdateJob doesn't update page_touched. More generally shouldn't this use built-in HTMLCacheUpdateJob for forward compatibility with any future changes to how caching works in MediaWiki? Also this would allow core's deduplication code to be used.
At one point I thought that this would be unnecessary, since the language links from this extension are generated on every (non-varnish cached) view (as opposed to stored in parser cache). However it actually is necessary since MW will give 304 not modified responses based on page_touched.

This assumes that all sites have same interwiki structure for language links or things will break. This is fine since its true on wiktionary, however I think this requirement should be clearly documented.
The indexe on cognatePages for the queries from selectLinkDetailsForPage, selectSitesForPage seem to be not quite right. I think the index should be (cpga_title, cpga_namespace, cpga_sites).
I assume this is not using the LinkUpdates related hooks because it only wants to deal with new pages not edits (?) However it seems that this still triggers on all edits. Perhaps it should look at the EDIT_NEW flag in the onPageSaveComplete hook to avoid some unnecessary database interaction.

how would we generate the kind of estimates you would need in order to sign off on this type of change?

Measure the QPS writes/rows written/percentage of write IOPS you have now, evaluate what is the increase with the new method, and scale with a worst-case-scenario factor. Or think on how you would do it on a separate set of servers, and I would instantly accept it because you would at least reduce the write load by half. I do not approve or deny things, I provide feedback and I would love if more developers had into account and discussed physical or architecture issues.

Personally, I'd like to see watchlists on client wikis notify you when a change is made to a item that actually affects one of the pages you watch

That seems like a good fit to combine it with the purchase of the externals servers for the T126641: [RFC] Devise plan for a cross-wiki watchlist back-end feature. Budgets for next fiscal year are being prepared right now I would ask as soon as possible for them.

What is the problem? I see 3 possibilities for that :


You are doing OLTP-like queries, so generally speaking you convert SELECT a JOIN B into SELECT A; SELECT B IN (). which should be almost as performant (except for an extra round trip) because you should only be selecting a few rows
You are doing analytics, so you just just a consolidated slave with all data though multi-source replication, as I mentioned before
You are running large (millon-sized) ranges on production- just don't do that in the first place


Future cases/hypothetical cases can be discussed later, we can backtrack, it is easy to move things around with no downtime. It is not easy to separate later. Also, new servers usually means better, more powerful servers! Take advantage of that if you can.

Re. different set of servers  that would work for some of the immediate use-cases, but I'm not sure it would work for the other use cases.  I know that @hoo & @Lydia_Pintscher have some other mediawiki integrations in mind.  Personally, I'd like to see watchlists on client wikis notify you when a change is made to a item that actually affects one of the pages you watch (statement tracking would allow us to determine this). TASK DESCRIPTIONRecently a user created a property but forget to close the property proposal. I noticed it only when the error message was displayed after I clicked the "create" button.

Also Special:NewItem says "Make sure the item does not already exist" but there're no convenient way to find them.

EDIT DETAILSI extracted mathematical formulae from English wikipedia articles related to math (approximately 18,000). One example formula looks like the following:

\alpha_J = R_i - [R_f + \beta_{iM} \cdot (R_M - R_f)]

Then I used primary source tool to upload them on Wikidata. The datatype mathematical _expression_ uses backslashes for certail formulae such as
```
\Gamma(n)=(n-1)!
```
However, when I checked the same formula after uploading it on primary source tool, it looked like this:

\\alpha_J = R_i - [R_f + \\beta_{iM} \\cdot (R_M - R_f)]

All the single slashes were replaced by double slashes and due to this error, the formulas won't be approved. Is there any solution to this problem?this _expression_ is converted to
```
\\Gamma(n)=(n-1)!
```
and it's not possible to approve that claim.

TASK DESCRIPTIONWe need a test to system to test all new features we've developed since last fall to all access to foreign repository entities.
Minimum test setup would be a wiki that is a  "main" repo (think Wikidata) and a wiki that is another repo that also uses entities (to make things simpler for stat: properties only) from the "main" repo (think Commons). The former should also be a client, so both repo and client functionality could be tested.

Statement IDs should definitely be represented as bnodes (internally) and skolem IRIs externally because they are uniquely defined within an entity node representation.  They have no meaning outside of the entity.

The typing semantics of Wikibase values are very obscure and entirely too complex for most normal reuse implementations of the data.  If values are intended to be "shared between items" by an external consumer, then they should be represented as another entity type, and optimally their URIs should be dereferenceable.  However, we know that this is not the case, so my personal "impression" of these things is already wrong.

Similarly confusing is the muddled reference implementation.  My use case simply needs the references to be presented in the context of the statement that gives the reference a meaning.  In my estimation, a reference is just a statement about a statement in the context of a one item, so I do not see how or why a reference can be "shared between items". So you have created the outline of the deserializer, which is cool. Maybe this ticket could be serve as a kind of tracking ticket for all related smaller tasks? If I get it right we need couple of elements to be added (each could/should likely be a separate tasks), and then simply put it all together in LexemeChangeOpDeserializer (this could be another smaller task). This ticket could be a parent to all those smaller tasks. Once all "subtasks" are done, this could be simply closed.
