Create new item ("Springfield TV tower)
Give it a description ("A TV tower near Springfield, run by Springfield Media")
Say it is an "instanceof": "TV tower" (if that is a good way to model it)
Say it has a certain height (124m)
Say it it was build in a certain year (1985)

TASK DESCRIPTIONThis query, without caching, takes about six seconds, sometimes up to eight:

With explicit gearing hint, it takes less than half a second:

This is the kind of query (does x have class y?) that we’ll run very often for WikibaseQualityConstraints type checks, so it would be great if it performed well without such optimizer hand-holding. (We also set the maxQueryTimeMillis URL parameter that BlazeGraph supports, so a long query runtime, even if below the default 60 s timeout, can result in false positives (constraint violations) for us.)
This query, on the other hand, which in a way inlines the start of the path (Q6012487 has only a single P31 statement), runs just as fast with and without gearing hint:

I assume BlazeGraph chooses the forward hearing for this query by default, for whatever reason. (With explicit "reverse" gearing hint, it takes about as long as the original query without hint.)
And finally, just to paint the full picture, the query we actually use in WikibaseQualityConstraints for type checking is this:

@thiemowmde Nevermind, I got a little mixed up. I was concerned that -{zh:Foo;zh-tw:Bar}- would add an entry to the global translation table, in addition to specifying a one-time conversion. But that's not the case. CHANGES TO TASK DESCRIPTION...Looking further it seems that most references to this concept in XML files actually use http://wikiba.se/ontology not wikidata.org, although there are a few references to http://www.wikidata.org/ontology on the web.
In fact, using Google, I find 1,800 references to `wikiba.se/ontology`, 4,000 references to `www.wikidata.org/ontology`, and over 12,000 references to `wikidata.org/ontology`.
