I did some basic research and right now we have for values >= 10^12: total values: 918 no precision: 456 (~50%) +-0 precision: 160 (17%) small (<10) value for precision: 22 (2%) bigger precision value: 280 (30%) for values >= 10^9: total values: 15670 no precision: 5677 (36%) +-0 precision: 5250 (33%) small (<10) value for precision: 435 (2%) bigger precision value: 4308 (27%) I think this says that we can pretty much ignore the values with small precisions (i.e., assume that they are accurate even though in some cases they are not, and fix the wrong ones manually or semi-manually). However, the question of zero-precision ones stays. Smalyshev added a comment. E.g. 3000,000+-10,000 can be written as 300e4, while 3000,000+-0 must be written as 3000,000. In theory, yes. In practice, we have tons of values in the DB which are +-0 but only because nobody bothered to set the proper precision. In fact, I think most of the people have very vague idea about how that works. Also, given the current UI, it's kind of hard to set the correct one. If you are dealing with something like US GDP, we have 17,419,000,000,000 as a value, and it has +-1 as precision, which is clearly absolutely wrong, nobody knows it up to a dollar. But to make it right, one needs to type 10 (my guess about the actual precision) without making a mistake in the count of zeroes. And do it consistently for every GDP figure. The odds of that happening on Wikidata seem very low to me. OTOH, I would very much appreciate seeing the number above as 17.419 trln or 17,419 bln or at least 17.419×10⁹. Nikki added a comment. It is possible to manually adjust the coordinates to get the desired display using the same method I used for my locations in Fiji example, e.g. this query. Unfortunately I had to split it into two parts to stop it timing out so it's more complicated than it should be. Why not provide an additional map view centred on 180° so that users can choose a Pacific-friendly style when it's a better fit for their query? The strange popup mechanism we currently use for units and and language selection is really a hack working around the assumption that there can only be one input box. I for one really like it if i can just type what i mean, without stepping through various input fields. I really appreciate interfaces that understand syntax - and considering the use of @ and # for marking up keywords on twitter, facebook, phabricator & co, I think this is quite common, at least for power users. In any case, please note that we already support special syntax for specifying the uncertainty or precision of the input. And we require people to use that syntax to express precision. input examples: 123 (unspecified precision) 123.5+/-0.2 (uncertainty range is 0.4) 7e3 (7000 with three insignificant digits) I don't think we should mix "use syntax" with "use fields". We should do either syntax for everything, of fields for everything, or both for everything. So, this was part of the LARGE refactoring of the serialization stuff / removing lib serializers for those that remember that mess (it spans about 30 patches or something like that). The options were introduced to keep the output in various areas of wikibase exactly the same through the refactoring / removing of the lib serializers. The following places currently construct statement serializers: Scribunto_LuaWikibaseLibrary::newEntityAccessor() WikibaseRepo::getApiHelperFactory() SpecialEntityData::newDefaultRequestHandler() DumpJson::execute() All of them, set use the OPTION_SERIALIZE_MAIN_SNAKS_WITHOUT_HASH and OPTION_SERIALIZE_REFERENCE_SNAKS_WITHOUT_HASH flags. None of them sets the OPTION_SERIALIZE_QUALIFIER_SNAKS_WITHOUT_HASH. I cannot remember any good reason for this. I suspect that the flags were simply copied around. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who would like this. :) I've come across a couple of things which can make Leaflet do polar maps, e.g. https://github.com/GeoSensorWebLab/polarmap.js (Arctic, OSM-based) and https://github.com/lo-ise/leafarctica (Antarctica, imagery-based). There are examples of how they look at http://webmap.arcticconnect.org/polarmap.js/examples/PolarMap/geosearch/index.html and http://lo-ise.github.io/leafarctica/. I also found http://polar.openstreetmap.de/ (Antarctica, OSM-based) which isn't using Leaflet and https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Antarctica/Creating_a_map which talks about creating tiles for polar maps. The main problem I can see is that we can't use the existing map tiles for this.
