Also, the problem unfortunately is not very well reproducible, it comes and goes, though it shows up often enough to be annoying. Everything seems slow after a few edits: page load, auto-completion, save, etc. It looks like a rate limit is raised by edits and is impacting every request. I just went through the api-requests dashboard for each wikibase api module and didn't spot any spikes in the execution time

These timings are sampled and come from ApiMain and are essentially the time spent in the execute method.
It looks like all of this data gets logged into the ApiAction table in hadoop so we could also try looking there (also unsampled there I believe).

While just going to the sandbox https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4115189 and removing some statements I am able to trigger some requests that do seem to take quite a while.
The behaviour seems very inconsistent, perhaps 1 in 3 sets of requests go very slowly.

Yes, e.g. when trying to add a property and a value for it. The autocompletion on properties sometimes does not work at all so you have to attempt again. Also there is a noticeable lag for the property names to show up for autocompletion if it works. Once you have selected a property e.g. of type date the verification that the data entered is valid takes quite some time too. Test2 has been in gorup0 for rather a long time, and if people expect that and we change it, well, confusion follows.

I'm going to first make a change in the dispatch script to check a mediawiki config var to see if it should actually run or not and backport this first.

This will mean that I can:


stop dispatching
Change the lock manager over
enable dispatching


Without trying to coordinate this with changes in operations-puppet.

This is needed otherwise locks will be missed. This Grafana chart shows how the rate of constraintsTableUpdate jobs dropped with the deployment of T182110: Only update constraints table when constraint statements were edited. At a glance, it seems like roughly one tenth of all property changes affect the constraints (the avg in the chart drops by about one order of magnitude). Notice that this time the connection to the db was refused. I thought that this might be caused by a timing issue, as the wait-for-it.sh scripts can not be found, so I tried to install MW via the php install command but this time I got the same error messages as before. A look in the database showed that no tables have had been created. However I then renamed the LocalSettings.php and did a manual install via the web interface and this time it worked. In put the old LocalSettings.php back in place and run the update.php script and then I had a working Wikibase installation.
However the query service was still not working.
I could get Blasegraph (wikibasedocker_wdqs_1) to start properly by changing line 5 of runBlazegraph.sh from "runBlazegraph.sh" to "./runBlazegraph.sh" and wikibasedocker_wdqs-update_1 seemed to start working by changing line 6 of runUpdate.sh from "wait-for-it.sh $WIKIBASE_HOST:80 -t 60 -- \" to "/wait-for-it.sh $WIKIBASE_HOST:80 -t 60 -- \" (note the additional slash at the beginning).
However wikibasedocker_wdqs-proxy_1 still has an issue.

I can follow all your arguments. It's just that I think the effect of this (actually well defined) behavior on users is really, really negligible. Most users are never going to see coordinates as numbers anyway, but as dots or shapes on maps.

And even if, which user will think of sub-millimeters when they see a representation like 13.3667? Especially when the object is a city, or any larger shape. Most users don't even know what 1 degree is in meters or miles.

That said, I agree this could be improved, and even have an actual suggestion I want to implement some day, either in the RDF export or somewhere deeper in the Wikibase code base: Basically, cut off decimal places that do not have any effect on any of the output formats we support. This algorithm should consider all output formats, because when such an algorithm is applied we don't know which output format will be used.

But this idea requires coordinates to be stored as strings, which they are not. I removed the "Issues" tab on all GitHub mirrors a while ago, but left them open for code bases that are actually on GitHub. We monitor incoming issues and turn them into Phabricator tickets if needed. Coordinates on Wikidata do not have a dimension, but a precision. Clients are free to derive a dimension from this precision if they need to. But in general we can not literally know the dimension of the object described by some coordinates. @Charlie_WMDE our current language list comes from mediawiki's UI i18n, it has nothing to do with Items. We have a way to allow additional code, but no good way to define localized language names for them. Language names fur the standard UI languages come from the Unicode CLDR library.

All that makes sense if you think of item labels - we use them to adopt the display of items to the user's UI language. All this makes no sense at all if you think of lexemes. Hence the confusion.
