I touch "Nearby places" in the Commons app, and a map opens showing me the notable places around me that lack a Commons picture. I walk to the nearest one, "Sabuli town hall", touch the camera icon, take a picture and confirm. The app: Uploads the picture to Commons, Links it from the Wikidata item (the map shows Wikidata items that lacks a Commons picture, so we know the QID) Adds the category found in the Wikidata item's P373 "Commons category" if it has any (many Wikidata items have a Commons category but lack a P18 image, sometimes because only centuries old images from colonial times are available, or most often because nobody has taken the time to select one). T166139: Query optimizer for labels should be using sub queries seems to be pretty hard to do in generic case (that is to say I currently have no good idea how to do it, suggestions welcome). It is true that many of these issues can be solved with proper query writing, but making Blazegraph Optimizer do it is non-trivial, as it seems. And making users do it doesn't always work, as many users are not advanced enough in their knowledge of SPARQL and implementation details. OTOH, for small query results, fetching the labels client-side may be a viable solution. Labels also should be highly cacheable in common use case (though cache hit rate may not be very good). It seems to me like a viable idea at least to try out. CHANGES TO TASK DESCRIPTIONCreate a magic word to be used on English Wikipedia (and possibly elsewhere) to replaceas an override for the display of the Wikidata short description in all of the places where the description is paired with English Wikipedia content, including but not limited toon the apps, in search, and in Visual Editor's link moduleThe new magic word should be {{SHORTDESC:1946 film by Howard Hawkes}}
When displaying the short description, the display should check to see if the magic word is filled in (not blank) in the English Wikipedia article. If there is a description on English Wikipedia, then that description should be used.
If the magic word isn't used on the page, or if the description is blank, then it should show the description from Wikidata.

In those cases, it should pull the description from Wikidata.
Once this override is live, Wikipedia editors will populate the magic word on pages where they want to override the description. If/when they write enough descriptions that it's roughly comparable to the number of existing Wikidata descriptions, we will change the system again, to only pull from the Wikipedia descriptions, and not use the descriptions on Wikidata as the default/fallback. At that point, on pages that don't have the magic word (or on pages where the description is left blank), there will be no description to display.
We're still talking about when that switch will happen -- the current plan is to switch when there are non-blank descriptions on 2 million article pages. That might happen quickly, or it might take a long time, depending on how the community chooses to use the magic word. TomT0m added a comment. I think the simpler the writing of the query is, the better for the user. As a user, I’d prefer not having to care about wikibase:label at all, having a label for a human is such an important and basic thing … Most of the time it’s just annoying to have to add this to a query. Automatically wrapping the query to solve a problem of performance of a service I’d prefer not having to care about seems like a weird complication to me (almost like a Goldberg machine :). But I don’t care that much and you’re the boss :) I guess the service is needed in some cases anyway and you’ll have to solve the performance issues in these cases as well. I’m not convinced moving labels to the query service UI is the right solution here… most of the problems you describe can be solved instead by optimizing the query, using subqueries to only run the label service very late in the query execution. TASK DESCRIPTIONReplace wd:Q255 and the like with their label according to the user language is the query service result display for entities datatypes.
Rationale:
Labels for item or other entities can be computed through the « wikibase:label » service. This is useful, but causes major performance issues in queries as some queries timeout with the usage of this service while taking a handful of seconds with the query service call commented.
An idea to solve this is to deal with the computing of the label not at the query time with wikibase:label but at the result display time of the result set. This could be way more efficient in some cases, for example when the result set is small but the service is actually called a lot during the query, or when the result set is big but the user actually watch a tiny fraction of it, especially when the ?xLabel variables generated by the service are used only in the « select … { » projection part of the query and never in the « { … } » part.

CHANGES TO TASK DESCRIPTIONCreate a magic word to be used on English Wikipedia as an override for the display of the(and possibly elsewhere) to replace Wikidata short description in all of the places where the description is paired with English Wikipedia content, including on thebut not limited to apps, in search, and in Visual Editor's link moduleThe new magic word should be {{SHORTDESC:1946 film by Howard Hawkes}}
When displaying the short description, the display should check to see if the magic word is filled in (not blank) in the English Wikipedia article. If there is a description on English Wikipedia, then that description should be used.
If the magic word isn't used on the page, or if the description is blank, then it should show the description from Wikidata.
"Blank" means:
-- not having any description in the field {{SHORTDESC:}}
-- just blank spaces {{SHORTDESC: }}[[ https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia%3AVillage_pump_%28proposals%29=revision=824285679=824238838 | RFC consensus acceptance criteria:]]

In those cases, it should pull the description from Wikidata.
Once this override is live, Wikipedia editors will populate the magic word on pages where they want to override the description. If/when they write enough descriptions that it's roughly comparable to the number of existing Wikidata descriptions, we will change the system again, to only pull from the Wikipedia descriptions, and not use the descriptions on Wikidata as the default/fallback. At that point, on pages that don't have the magic word (or on pages where the description is left blank), there will be no description to display.
We're still talking about when that switch will happen -- the current plan is to switch when there are non-blank descriptions on 2 million article pages. That might happen quickly, or it might take a long time, depending on how the community chooses to use the magic word.

I believe this concludes this investigation. Next step would be creating the actual implementation, and one of the requirements would be to somehow "batch" fetching the data of all lexemes on the page, to minimize the amount of DB querying. Regarding the estimation of the table size. The very rough but secure estimate would be IMO: the lemma table would be of size 10 * number of all lexemes, and the item reference (language and lexical category) table would have the exact number of rows as the number of existing lexemes. TASK DESCRIPTIONIn order for kafka cluster to be useable as reliable WDQS event source, it'd be good to have events for more than 7 days.
