No, the code that you’re quoting is actually supposed to solve this issue :) I guess we forgot to link Ib296d9065f to this task.

We could do this in the same announcement as {T169770}, but I feel like that should focus more on the deprecation and migration path of `wbEntity`.

We //might// also want to amend the Stable Interface Policy to clarify that adding arguments to a hook is not a breaking change. (I have to admit, I don’t remember what the PM / Engineering Time decision on this was – were we going to do this or not?)

Synopsis

Wikidata Query Service (WDQS) is a public service designed to provide a SPARQL endpoint which allows you to query against the Wikidata data set. WQDS allows users to run complex queries and ask intricate questions to Wikidata, a free, open and vast knowledge base. My project involves improvements to the Explorer Dialog and the Graph Explorer of the Wikidata Query Service.

Making the Explorer dialog more interactive and informative is the first goal of the project. This will be achieved by:

Allowing multiple Explorer Dialogs
Making the Dialog Resizable
Making the Dialog Draggable
Making the Dialog Responsive

Making the Graph Explorer more intuitive and explanatory is the second goal of the project. The main task in this section is to show and expand incoming links in the Graph Explorer. I also plan to identify and make more improvements to the Graph Explorer throughout the course of the summer.

These improvements will benefit WQDS users by enhancing the readability and the usability of the service.

Task 1: Improvements to Explorer Dialog for query.wikidata.org

Multiple Explorer Dialogs
In the current state of the Explorer Dialog, it is only possible to view the results query by query. I will integrate a feature which will make it possible to view and compare the results of more than one query at once.

Resizable Explorer Dialogs
Currently, the explorer dialog is of a fixed size so regardless of the complexity of the query, the size remains the same. This can hinder readability. Using JQuery UI (https://jqueryui.com/), I plan to make it possible to resize an explorer dialog. This will also help to accommodate several dialogs on the same page.

Draggable Explorer Dialogs
It is not currently possible to drag the Explorer Dialog around the page.
This will also be done using JQuery UI and will be convenient for the user as he can then view multiple explorer dialogs side by side.

Responsive Explorer Dialogs
After adding the above features, I will ensure that the site continues to be responsive and mobile-ready.

Task 2: Improve Graph Explorer for query.wikidata.org

Allow to Show and Expand Incoming Links
In the existing state of the Graph Explorer, a user can see and expand outgoing links but not incoming links. This is the main feature that has to developed in this task. Adding this feature will make exploration of the query results more intuitive and informative for users.
I will be adding this feature in GraphResultBrowserNodeBrowser.js in wikidata/query/gui.

Other possible improvements

Disallow dragging nodes outside the window.
On dragging a node outside the Graph Explorer window, the node sometimes does not return to the Window and remains outside the window. Then, it is impossible to continue exploring the graph.

Prevent Overlapping in the Graph Explorer
If there are many nodes and some movement occurs, nodes start to overlap each other.
Preventing this kind of overlapping will improve readability and usability.

Improvements to the Graph Explorer Zoom
Zooming in and out of the Graph Explorer often stutters and experiences glitches.
Fixing this issue will also improve usability.

The update handler for the WikibaseClient extension runs the client/sql/entity_usage.sql database command, and then populates the table as well (SqlUsageTrackerSchemaUpdater::fillUsageTable). I've given the error handling some more thought and am not convinced we need to (attempt to) roll back the upload, should submitting captions fail.
Here's what could go wrong submitting captions:


invalid user input: we should validate this before submitting, so this shouldn't be cause for errors
upload processing taking too long (assembly & addition of page_prop is deferred...) and we fail to retrieve mediainfo entity id: this is kind of expected to fail immediately after upload so this is attempted 10 times, with increasing intervals (1s, 2s, 3s, ...) but it'll cause failure eventually (after 9 retries, or 45 seconds)
fail to submit to wikibase (e.g. it's down): this is not expected to fail, so it'll only be attempted 3 times (with 1s & 2s intervals), mainly to deal with dropped API calls on a flaky connection
continued network connectivity issues after the upload did get through already


#4 would make reverting impossible anyway
#2 & #3 would usually be issues on WMF's end - not sure we'd want to throw away users' uploads because our tools broke
#1 if this happens, we should tighten our pre-submit validation...

I suggest that, instead of attempting to roll back & after having automatically retried the calls a few times, we just display an informative error message that explains what happened (file was uploaded, captions weren't), why (the exact error message) and suggest they go to the file page & add the caption there.

So debugging has lead me to SubmitEntityAction::undo in wikibase, and the following code snippet.

$patchedContent->equals( $latestContent ) returns true, so it appears that the undo action will do nothing hence nothing is done.
The 2 content objects here do indeed have the same content inside (both with the OLD data)

$latestRevision correctly has the latest revision ID and text.
$latestRevision->mSlots->slots->main->content{LexemeContent} has the correct blob of JSON, but the Lexeme entity within the content is incorrect showing the previous revision (not the latest)

I suspected this was due to LexemeHandler and the special handling for Forms in LexemeHandler::newEntityContent, as an EntityHolder can contain a specific revision of an Entity, and the special case for Forms will load an entity from an EntityLookup which will not have a specified version / revision. But it doesn't look like this special case code for forms it actually called during the undo submit.

It seems that the DeferredDecodingEntityHolder has one blob, the entity object it has does not match.
The trace of the first moment this occurs when DeferredDecodingEntityHolder::getEntity is called can be seen below... (something to do with redirects, doesn't seem relevant, but still probably an issue because of whatever underlying issue is causing all of this)

So how does the entity property of $latestRevision get changed to have the content that we want to undo to rather than actually having the latest content?

I guess the translations should fix themselves?
If not then we could remove all current translations and let them repopulate?

TASK DESCRIPTIONContext: This is C++ code running on VM "wdc" in Toolforge Cloud project "wdq-mm", using the CURL library.

I am querying the Wikidata API from that code, example URL: https://www.wikidata.org/w/api.php?format=json&action="">

Mostly, it works. Sometimes, it returns HTML instead of the specified JSON, more specifically, the API manual, as though I had not used any parameters. Repeatedly querying that URL, even with adding random parameters, results in the same HTML. This will be true for a minute or so, suggesting it's a specific server/cache that the load balancer gives me, then forgets about me.

The last line of the returned HTML seems to be the most helpful for debugging:
