But if we now would need to move VM, let’s reopen T197583. By the way, the wikidata-constraints system was similarly upgraded in-place, from Jessie to Stretch (see wikitech). And if I remember correctly, nginx usually sends headers in all lowercase. So after reading this investigation and trying to look at the root inconsistencies I see a few things.
The formatting either:
happens correctly, and we get something formatted
the ValueFormatter that is used returns a FormattingException or InvalidArgumentExceptions
an EntityIdFormatter that is wrapped in a EntityIdValueFormatter fatals due to typehints (the new case we are seeing with out lexeme code)
The EntityIdFormatter interface currently doesn't say what should happen in the situation that a bad value is passed to it, and it can not be formatted.
Conventions within wikibase probably dictate that this should be an InvalidArgumentException.
The EntityIdValueFormatter already has a small bit of code checking that the value passed is roughly the correct type:
if ( !( $value instanceof EntityIdValue ) ) {
throw new InvalidArgumentException( 'Data value type mismatch. Expected an EntityIdValue.' );
}
before trying to call ->format with the internal formatter.
So if the EntityIdFormatter implementations actually threw InvalidArgumentExceptions when they know they are being given things they can't handle we would have 1 exception constantly bubbling up to deal with in the API rather than any fatals etc.
It would probably make sense for the ValueFormatter interface and the EntityIdFormatter interface to both throw their own flavour of InvalidArgumentException (although this might be overkill).
EntityIdValueFormatter could then catch one flavour and rethrow in the correct flavour (could even be a FormattingException?)
Or we just make these InvalidArgumentExceptions consistant, and just catch them in the API execute method.

That isn't the issue here, the client still does not get the header.
This can be seen in the logs on T204267#4887839 which is reported by https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-WikibaseQualityConstraints/blob/1ef719f5891a616450e4fc21cfd49527a456b7d1/src/ConstraintCheck/Helper/LoggingHelper.php#L298 and dumps all of the headers into the log.

I agree that we shouldn't end up with a zoo of different front-end solutions. TASK DESCRIPTIONProblem:
Placeholder texts should be placeholders for actual data, but currently in Wikibase we abuse them as usage instructions: “enter a label”, “enter a description” and “enter some aliases” are not typical labels, descriptions or aliases.
Example:
We could copy the label/description/aliases of any item we want (yay CC0) or invent terms for a fictional sample item, e. g.:
example item
an example item to demonstrate some aspects of {{SITENAME}} items
sample item|example entity
However, this may result in users describing regular items as e. g. “item for the British author Douglas Adams”, so perhaps some other kind of example entity would be better, such as:
John Doe
name commonly used for fictional example persons
J. Doe|Jane Doe
This also avoids using “item” in the placeholders, which is nice if we want to continue using the same placeholders for items and properties.

Just to clarify: In portrait mode the text break rather early, and I expect it should run for longer (but I might also not be up to date with the breakpoint specifications) Figma says "column scale from 260 to 420 px" - I believe that's the maximum width we are seeing. The break is wanted as lines are easier to read if there are around 60 characters. On wikidata.org, I added the gadget and selected "All Sources" within the config and the interstitial just kind of hangs indefinitely for me. (Chrome 71.0.3578.98 on Mac Mojave.) Is this expected for now? This is version 1, and, yes, it's probably broken because it's not maintained anymore. Version 2, i.e., the one running a MediaWiki extension as its front end, is deployed in a test Wikidata instance: https://wikidata-pst.wmflabs.org/ You can feel free to play with the filter tool (first item in the primary sources tool sidebar menu). or you can try out the item-based view, for instance https://wikidata-pst.wmflabs.org/wiki/Q254 The item-based view is not fully usable because the import of the full Wikidata dump only partially succeeded. The importDump.php maintenance script didn't seem to work effectively for Wikidata. You can refer to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki-Vagrant#How_to_import_a_Wikidata_dump for the import procedure I used. Is the current version (gadget/backend at pst.wmflabs.org) the indefinite production version for now? Correct, although the caveats above apply. Looking at wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Version, I'm not seeing a deployed extension, so I assume that might be part of a forthcoming development cycle? Temporary fix is reverted and CI still seems to work, so I think we can close this – Phan configuration changes are unnecessary because Wikibase now uses the new names of the moved classes.
