But I am kinda questioning whether the advantage of splitting code outside of PHP into separate service and all the complexities that follow from that. Maybe there's an easier way to achieve the same benefit - e.g. using some kind of template engine that exists in both JS and PHP, so we can be reasonably sure that if template is the same the output is the same? We're not talking Wikitext-class complexity here, we'd be controlling the templates and the box itself seems to be pretty basic HTML. Smalyshev added a comment. Yes, judging from our preliminary test, if we get uncontested use of the server or even a certain chunk of it maybe (not sure if possible?) it would be enough. Note that an interesting scenario that we want to test in foreseeable future involves cluster setup, so we'd want at least 2 hosts (not sure whether they have to be on 2 separate hardware machines) with requirements close to what wdqs hosts have. It could splitting cloudvirt host into two VMs exclusively used by these test hosts would be ok. diego added a comment. @jcrespo, the API works good for query specific pages/entities, not for example to know which pages that existing in X_wiki are missing on the Y_wiki. My point here it is that the wikidata identifier is currently the main identifier for a page/concept, and that this fact is not reflected on the DB structure. I'm not really sure what transient condition caused it to spike and then subside, however, I believe it's an indicator of a somewhat problematic trend: I've noticed quite a lot of instances similar to this where api-level or library level code is written to strictly and thoroughly validate data, complete with many specific exceptions that log as ERROR. Meanwhile callers of said code are much less thorough and so un-handled errors are regularly bubbling up into fatalmonitor. I don't think we can expect a revolutionary improvement in the discipline of developers calling these APIs but I do think that it's fair to ask the developers implementing thorough validation regimens to exercise some discipline in exception level logging. What might be the best venue to advocate for better error level classification when raising exceptions? It seems fairly obvious to me that this (and similar) validation errors should be DEBUG or INFO level as they are only useful to the consumer of an API and not relevant to the overall health and operation of the software itself. Thinking about this a bit deeper, what it seems like we need is a way to differentiate between user-input-validation-exceptions and filter them out of deployment dashboards, etc. These are only bugs in the sense that front-end code should have caught the exception. Without context, I would say that: (1) querying the wb_items_per_site table in the wikidatawiki on MariaDB, or (2) through the sitelinks on Wikidata Json dumps. That is not accurate, wikidata has an api for that: https://www.wikidata.org/w/api.php?action=""> Which returns a JSON to further analyze. Of course, you cannot join that with anything else, but those would be features outside of mediawiki, and that an analytics-focus data store could handle, or your own scratch data? I can't do that because your infobox https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorlage:Infobox_Software fetches references directly from Wikidata, which isn't realistic to implement on English Wikipedia, so I haven't implemented it. However, you can see how it works by looking at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marietta_Alboni for example. It fetches values from Wikidata (but uses a locally-supplied value for the image caption). It uses the infobox https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Infobox_person/Wikidata . You can see the effect of suppressing the birth date value at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:RexxS/infoboxdemo (second infobox). If you think that you are likely to want to use Module:WikidataIB as a replacement on de-wiki, then I could implement returning references, but you'll need to understand the documentation. Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE added a comment. It turns out I slightly misunderstood the comment data field. While we can use it to store arbitrary JSON data, what we’re supposed to do (if I understand correctly) is pass a Message object into CommentStoreComment::newUnsavedComment(). The CommentStore will then take care of serializing and deserializing this Message, including its arguments, using the comment_data field, which we don’t use otherwise. (It even does this in a fashion that avoids conflicts with our own data, should we still have any, isn’t that nice?) So while I did upload some proposed MediaWiki changes to hopefully increase the use of the comment data in MediaWiki (attempted RecentChange support and a hack to render messages in the user language), that’s not really necessary for us to use it: we can just start saving Messages with our CommentStoreComments right now. $updater->saveRevision( CommentStoreComment::newUnsavedComment( $this->msg( 'wikibaseschema-edit-schema-custom-summary' ) // Edited schema; custom summary: $1 ->plaintextParams( $data['summary'] ?? '' ) ) ); CommentStoreComment will render the message in the content language to set the comment text field, and the CommentStore will properly serialize the message on save (this part is already supported by MediaWiki). RexxS added a comment. If you use the WikidataIB module, you have to specify |fetchwikidata=ALL in the article to enable fetching info from Wikidata. That ensures that in each article, there has to be an active effort to "opt-in" to the use of Wikidata. There is then the opportunity at the article level to specify |suppressfields=fieldname that will completely suppress any value in the field called 'fieldname' in that article. I would also like to point out that TypeScript does not provide runtime type assertions like PHP 7, it only provides static type checking at compile time. The distinction might not make a difference to you, but I wanted to make it clear to anyone not familiar with TypeScript what it does and how it works. Personally, I don't find static typing as valuable as people claim it to be, and I therefor do not use TypeScript, but I'm not going to stand in the way of people who want to use it. :) Also, I really appreciate that you would be preserving the HTML output with Server-Side Rendering (SSR). Regarding the Structured Data on Commons topic: as per what's been stated in the last point of the "Solution proposal", we intend to move the whole of Wikibase entity page UI towards the new architecture. So that would include statement part of the item and property pages. We want to stop using the old front end code and infrastructure, and finally, stop maintaining it/delete it. With how the current SDC UI is built, as @Cparle states, using the some "components" from the old Wikibase UI code this would indeed mean changes required to the SDC part as well. There is no intention to drop the old UI "framework" over night of course. It will only happen once all relevant uses are moved to the new architecture, starting with the complete item and property page. This is definitely not going to happen in 2019. We are quite convinced that once item pages have switched fully to the Single Patch Application approach, transition for other users should be easier. The server side renderer service would be there, handling what is required by non-item-page cases (e.g. statements). BTW, we (WMDE) also intend to use the new architecture for the UI of lexeme pages, which currently party (i.e. statements) use the old framework. That's seems a pretty similar change as the one related to MediaInfo pages. Also, re the MCR points above. I admit I am not an expert on MCR topics, but if I am not completely wrong, this proposal here does not change much when taking MCR into account. In interactions with community members - including around the GLAM pilot projects - I have noticed that the earlier separate deployment of Captions has introduced a lot of confusion, including about its purpose and its relation to 'other structured data' which is still a mystery to most people... I've actually spent quite a bit of time behind the scenes in the past weeks answering people's confused questions. We have to keep in mind that the majority of the Commons community does not follow our project very closely, takes every new feature at face value and responds to it as if it's THE thing they will have to live with from then on. When we deploy Depicts separately and before other statements, I predict that 1. many community members will presume that this *is* everything SDC is about and 2. many community members will eagerly start (wrongly) filling the Depicts statement with structured data that does not belong there. And then, several weeks later (?), with deployment of 'other statements', we will get backlash. But I will happily be corrected by other community members, or receive tips on how we can better communicate separate deployment in order to minimize the confusion.
