  Old revisions are re-read from previous dumps. But even that takes plenty of 
time to decompress the old file, and recompress the already existing content so 
that it can be written out to the new file. Dumps are done by page, so the 
likelihood of a batch of pages having no new revisions is pretty small for our 
batch size. And having people download tens of thousands of files so that our 
batch sizes are small enough to get lucky here and there, is pretty unsavory as 
a solution.

  I guess this is why for the RDF and JSON dumps we only do currently 
revisions, not all revisions.
  
  There are a couple of angles that could make this situation better.
  
  Right now many clients perform multiple sequential API calls in a row to 
complete a set of edits on an entity, resulting in more revisions that are 
probably necessary. One ticket that I found covering this is T216881 
 (I'm sure there are more but I 
can't find them). Partly related here also is the desire to summarize changes 
well and automatically in edit summaries T67846 
.
  I suspect that even if we strongly pursued this route and managed to combine 
more changes into single revisions, the overall revision creation rate probably 
wouldn't change all that much.
  
  There is also the size of the JSON that is stored in revisions. There is 
likely room for optimization here, with some added overhead on the development 
side of things. Infact the storage serialization used to be different to the 
generally exposed serialization, but that change quite some time ago I believe 
to simplify things.
  
  I guess for the all revision dumps, we start the process from revision 1 
whenever generating a new dump? Is there a reason that we don't have some 
system in place to create dumps in batches of revisions or entities, and then 
do some checks each time we generate a dump to determine if something has been 
revdeled in a batch and then only regenerate that batch, otherwise use the 
previously generated dump? or something similar?

  I meant to bring this up before, but I guess I forgot - I'm thinking a 
whitelist probably //would// make more sense in the meantime. We know what 
skins have this thing, it's not particularly likely new ones will add it unless 
something major changes with the development/usage of this or related 
extensions, and it appears there is a fallback behaviour for those that don't 
have the better thing, so we should be falling back to that by default, instead 
of unlisted unsupporting skins just winding up with nothing at all.
  
  Basically it's a quick fix until we get something, you know, proper.

  Instead of solving this task, it would be better (but harder) to rewrite the 
current ooMenu without using jQuery.ui.widget but OOUI, given this component 
got deprecated by T142418 . But if I 
understand correctly the dependencies between components 
,
 in addition of the suggester of the search box in non-item pages, most 
suggesters in items edition use ooMenu, which makes the task even harder.

the two environments, rather than Scribunto itself's integration with the 
environments, so calling them "system-integration" wouldn't really be accurate.
  
  You could probably use the existing 'LuaStandalone' group like you proposed 
the 'system-integration' group. I don't think 'system-integration' would be an 
accurate group name, but if we can think of one that would be accurate for 
"tests not worth running when testing other extensions" I wouldn't be opposed 
to having Scribunto's suite tag the LuaStandalone tests with that too.

  So, a while ago we synced all of the wikibase log messages to the "Wikibase" 
log channel, it looks like we missed / didn't migrate 
Wikibase.NewItemIdFormatter at the time.
  
  For the SSR it should probably use a different log channel though. 
"Wikibase.TermboxSSR" sounds good though

  Some batching could be added to RdfDumpGenerator::preBatchDump rather than 
just doing the array_map there with Title::getTitleForId.
  
  It looks like the ns and title are needed for this LinkBatch bit in 
PageProps, why that is needed there is another question.
  LinkBatch itself would actually be able to do its query (currently in 
LinkBatch::doQuery) without ns and title, instead just using pageid.
  T208776  would generally help this 
situation.
  
  No idea if NS_FILE+MediaInfo have page props that we actually dump either, if 
they do not, then we could probably implement something to skip this step for 
entities that we know will not have page props that we want to dump.

  I want to create a new statement for a person:
  
  Family name/Last name: De Ruyter

  This is nearly impossible because "De Ruyter" has 100s of streets in the 
Netherlands... and the system does not match "instance" with "property".
  
  Wouldn't it be better to make the system a bit more intelligent to show "Last 
name" values first when a property "Last name" would be assigned?

  So I tried lbzip2, here's the result (on a VM sever with 2 cores, 2.1GHz, the 
decompression is CPU bound):

  That all looks fine.
  I added anew panel to 
https://grafana.wikimedia.org/d/00574/t204083-investigation?orgId=1 showing 
the stats for WANObjectCache and these keys.
  
  Those metrics show no real increase in requests for the keys for the spike in 
traffic to mc1033, perhaps it is something else?

 that `revision_tags` is a new field since the `2019-04` (April 2019) snapshot 
of `mediawiki_history`:

  However, the description in the documentation 

 "//...Tags associated to the revision//" does not translate to "//edits made 
from mobile, mobile app, desktop, etc//" amazingly well :)

  @BBlack @Dzahn: I have passed the topic of domain ownership transfer to the 
C-level ranks here at WMDE, and I have to inform that WMDE is not going to 
transfer the ownership of wikiba.se domain to WMF.
  As I understand your statements above, this basically invalidates the whole 
idea of moving the hosting of the said website to WMF cluster.
  
  I wish we WMDE folks have clarified this way earlier, before you have had 
spend quite some effort on working on this. I apologize for that, and I 
genuinely appreciate all your work on this topic.

  @Mrjohncummings apologies for the suboptimal response time. At WMDE we're in 
the middle of getting two bigger features through the door, which steals the 
most of my focus currently.
  I will personally have a look at those two bugs at Wikimedia Hackathon this 
weekend. I hope I will get some of my WMDE colleagues into the fun two. I 
believe I understand the description you were kind to provide above.
  Will any of you folks @Mrjohncummings @NavinoEvans @Sebastian_Berlin-WMSE 
happen to be in Prague this weekend? It would be fun to poke this thing

  @Topway.it I tried to reproduce this but I couldn't. The only thing that 
caught my eyes was that you are downloading wikibase docker image from a fork 
that doesn't belong to us (https://github.com/dbs/wikibase-docker/). You should 
download it from 
https://github.com/wmde/wikibase-docker/archive/wikibase-1.31.zip instead. 
Would it solve your issue?

  I am trying to create a new item via `wbeditentity`. The following `data` 
JSON fails with
  
"A unique dynamin-related protein is essential for mitochondrial fission in 
Toxoplasma gondii." is not a known language code.
  
  I tried it with and without the `"add":""`, same result. Why would 
`wbeditentity` not use `language` as the language code?

  Well, the real problem is not prefixes but that we're using here `wd:` for 
both M-entities and Q-entities, despite the former needing URIs starting with 
http://commons.wikimedia.org/entity and the latter 
http://www.wikidata.org/entity/. So the main problem is not the prefix but 
underlying URI, and the prefix is only the expression of it - these two types 
of entities can not have the same prefix and same URI space. Now, how we 
express it is the tricky part. We can of course define `wd:` as always being 
Wikidata prefix (see T222995 ) but 
we need to figure out how to configure these prefixes and URIs so that they 
point to the correct namespaces.

  We are right now seeing a small chaos at VIAF regarding handling the Swedish 
National Libraries new system that is LIBRIS-URI Property:P5587 
. VIAF and LIBRIS has been asked 
about plans but
  
  - no one has published what they will do
  - VIAF is starting mixing Property:P906 
 and Property:P5587 

  - Swedish LIBRIS says after 2 email/questions to them that they have error 
reported it to OCLC/VIAF but they give us no Task ID or description what they 
think is wrong or the status
  
  My conclusion is
  
  - a better change process is needed
  - tasks/progress should be trackable
  - public Workboards  are 
needed so we can link and track what is happening like we can with Wikidata 
using Phabricator

request is for, something that needs to be done at the HTTP level.

  @Ebe123 the `CACHE_VERSION` bump was merged and should have been deployed for 
a while now, but purging Q11980  from the 
parser cache (I tried both `action=purge` and `purgePage.php`) doesn’t seem to 
fix the issue. Any ideas why?

  So, I would be surprised to learn that we can distinguish mobile from desktop 
edits in any project, not just Wikidata.

from our service bear a header `Host: (www.)wikidata.org` and reach which ever 
IP(s) `appservers.discovery.wmnet` resolves to on the system running it. This 
sounds like a name resolution challenge and a case for HostAliases 

 or, more traditionally, a CNAME record 
.
  Again, if we are missing something, implementing this can be arranged, but we 
really rather not as it sounds like there are more appropriate tools for the

distinguish how many mobile edits were made from Wikidata.  @JAllemandou, Do

have. Hence the need for the `Host: wikidata.org` HTTP header. k8s can't help

service. If the examples are to act as smoke tests then their reliability 
depends on the upstream service; a dependency which would need to be configured 
(are we going to point it against prod for this?) & modeled (how to express 
service inter-dependency in the config?) in order to be able to make sense of 
the information down the line (i.e. "no need to be alarmed that this service 
reported 500 while the mw api was down").

  The `x-amples` spec defines checks that will be exercised run using the 
service-checker[1] software in wikimedia infrastructure. Those run on a cron, 
contacting the service every 1 minute. The dependency part on mediawiki is 
something we can work on the alerting system level, but I have to say we don't 
currently do that for any service (and multiple ones rely on mediawiki) for 
mostly technical reasons related to our current monitoring infrastructure. That 
will not always be the case though.Also note that we know and accept that those 
monitoring checks create inorganic traffic and increase system load. It's a 
price that we have accepted to pay.
