  @Bugreporater, if you have a item ID and you want to find out if it is a 
redirect than you can use
  
function folowRedirect(id)
return mw.wikibase.getEntity(id).id
end
  
  It works, and `folowRedirect('Q50940519')` will give you "Q9178333". It is 
useful if working with whole entities.

  Putnik's problem is common, but should be relatively easy to deal with (per 
Mvolz). Where we really run into problems is with the reverse situation: where 
Wikidata properties conflate multiple concepts that may be handled distinctly 
in Wikipedia infobox parameters. Many Wikidata property are vague or 
inconsistently used due to Wikidata's fuzzy, must-fit-all-languages ontology.
  
  Examples of properties that explicitly conflate distinct concepts:
  
  - `P21`: sex or gender (which is also clumsily used to handle transgender 
status, i.e. "transgender male")
  - `P61`: discoverer or inventor
  - `P629`: edition or translation of
  
  Examples of properties that are implicitly vague:
  
  - `P131`: located in the administrative territorial entity (notice how the 
South Pole Telescope  is 
located at "South Pole, Antarctic Treaty area" rather than "South Pole, 
Antarctica" as it would be if we weren't using Wikidata)
  - `P171`: parent taxon (which can in practice correspond to any taxon level: 
genus, tribe, family, etc.)
  - `P527`: has part
  - `P642`: of
  - `P828`: has cause
  
  If we go down this road, we're going to be muddying Wikipedia's more-or-less 
clearly defined infobox parameters with awkward, inconsistent data (or data 
suggestions) that may not fit a particular language's understanding of a 
concept or ontology. `P21` is the most likely to cause obvious problems, but I 
feel like it's only the tip of the iceberg, and we need to consider this 
carefully before we open up pandora's box.

  I'm not entirely sure I understand it correctly, but 
PageEditStash::getAndWaitForStashValue uses ILoadBalancer::getAnyOpenConnection 
and by chance acquires a connection where a transaction was already open for

  So, PageEditStash::parseAndCache() parses the page while holding the lock. 
PageEditStash->getAndWaitForStashValue() waits for that lock, and it apparently 
does so within the DB transaction that will be used to write the new revision. 
If parsing takes long, the process waiting for the lock may wait for long, and 
the transaction may time out.
  
  Solution: PageEditStash->getAndWaitForStashValue() should be called ouside 
the transaction. Don't know yet how hard or easy that would be.
  
  Thanks @Pchelolo for digging up that stacktrace. I really need to improve my 
Kibana-Fo

  Good point. So, other candidates are:
  
  - SqlBagOStuff::lock, which is called indirectly but a lot of different 
caching related things, including WANObjectCache. Which in turn is used by 
NameTableStore, but we should only be doing reads on that during normal 
operation, and not locking the database... I hope.
  - PageEditStash. Should only be read, not written to, while saving a new 
revision.

  @daniel I don't think this is that lock showing up here. Reading the code, it 
seems like if that lock was taken, we should've seen a bunch more queries in 
this transaction, like some deletes, read from the archive table etc.

  Interesting. RevisionStore::insertRevisionRowOn() does uses GET_LOCK when it 
detects the auto-increment value of the revision table to be out of sync. This 
was introduced as a fix for  T202032: Duplicate ar_rev_id values in several 
wikis .
  
  I suppose multiple saves detecting this, and all attempting to acquire the 
same lock, can lead to a pile-up, causing some such requests to time out.
  
  The pile-up could perhaps be avoided by intropducing a randomized delay

why there is a breaking change proposed for the RDF dump instead of no breaking

  This was due to a DB mistakenly being depooled.
  On Monday the intention was 1 dB would be depooled for maintenance, 
accidently 2 were depooled.
  This lead to dB stress during peak times (UTC evening).
  The same thing happened on Tuesday.
  We figure out exactly what was wrong Tuesday evening and rebalanced the 
pooled DBs slightly to shift some load around and to avoid waking the DBAs up.
  Wednesday morning the mistakenly depooled dB was re pooled.

  The so-called "Freebase" dataset is actually a mix of data from Freebase and 
a bunch of URLs that were pulled from Google web crawls by an intern as 
potential "evidence." They don't have anything to do with the provenance of the 
data that was in Freebase, which was recorded for every item of data that was 
written there. Of course it would be silly to suggest a blacklisted site, but I 
don't believe the intern was provided with a blacklist ahead of time and as the 
blacklist was developed after the fact it hasn't been used to filter what's 
presented to users.

  It would seem like the 2018-03-13 spreadsheet should be adequate to call this 
task complete. I would recommend including some qualitative understanding of 
the source of the Freebase data in addition to just pure curation ratio when 
making judgements about how to use which data. Things like MusicBrainz IDs and 
ISFDB IDs went through a heavily QA'd reconciliation process and are going to 
be high quality. Films, and to a lesser extent TV shows, were an area of focus 
for the Freebase team, so will generally be both high quality and relatively 
complete.
  
  Also many of the quality issues with the initial data set didn't have 
anything to do with the Freebase data itself, but the junky "evidence" URLs 
that Google produced after the fact to satisfy the Wikidata call for evidence. 
These tend to be of much, much lower quality than the data itself.
  
  Of course, after so many years, much of the value of the data has been 
squandered, but I bet there are still some areas where it could be used to 
significantly improve Wikidata.

  Definitely a new problem, and it is causing about 200 user actions per hour 
to be aborted/prevented (presumably edits, but may be other stuff as well).

  It was not considered "necessary" it was considered "preferable" in 
discussions we had while drafting this 4 steps plan. The sole reason was to 
limit the divergences between WDQS results and the dumps (current divergences 
are listed here

  I'm perfectly fine dropping this step (assuming others agree) if this causes 
much annoyance and only deprecate blank nodes at the WDQS level (I've updated 
the description of this ticket to reflect the discussions we had on the 
wikipage).

  It is just a big transaction that takes more than the limit we have for

  This is still happening now that 1.35.0-wmf.30 (T249962 
) is on all wikis, at a rate of ~100 
in the last hour or so.
  
  I mistakenly believed this was fully accounted for, but I now think it likely 
should have been a blocker.  Seeking advice.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  In https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/mediawiki/extensions/Wikibase/+/592302/ 
we added some small bash scripts to only run phpcbf over touched files accoring 
to git.
  This is so that we can remove a little time pre commit for developers.
  We just started rolling out to newer versions of codesniffer to some of our 
other repos and it now crossed our minds to put these scripts there too.
  
  The step beyond that would be including these bash scripts in 
mediawiki-codesniffer itself so that all repos can easily use them.

  Hi, I just observered a behavior. Possible reactions are:
  not reproducable, wontfix (with reason), fixed (the best of all 
possibilities) (scnr)
  clarify, if unclear.
  
  as far as I understand the regex, it says
  any characters (but at least one) followed by . with a list of 
acceptable suffices. Suffices might be written in uppercase, lowercase or even 
fancy case (e.g, tIfF).
  This does not state anything about underscores are not allowed.
  
  I also tested now with P18 , same 
problem.
  
  It differs from (?i).+\.(jpg|jpeg|jpe|png|svg|tif|tiff|gif|xcf|pdf|djvu|webp) 
for P18 , which allows additionally 
.jpe, .xcf und .pdf (and video formats) - without obvious reason.

  Here is a brief update. @Keegan will also be posting an update to the talk 
thread 
 
today.
  
  - The work to create a SPARQL endpoint for Commons has been re-prioritized. 
Our teams will be working on it over the next few months and the search team is 
currently estimating the work involved.
  - The first release will be a beta endpoint that will be updated via weekly 
dumps. Caveats will include limited performance, expected downtimes, and no 
interface, naming, or backward compatibility stability guarantees.
  - We do plan to move this to production, but we don't have a timeline on that 
yet.
  - The SPARQL endpoint for Commons will be restricted via a light and 
unobtrusive form of authentication, so that we can contact abusive bots / users 
and block them selectively (as a last resort) when needed. More details on this 
to come.
  - We want to emphasize that while we do expect a SPARQL endpoint to be part 
of a medium to long term solution, it will only be part of that solution. Even 
once the SPARQL endpoint is production-ready, it will still have limitations in 
terms of timeouts, expensive queries, and federation. Some use cases will need 
to be migrated, over time, to better solutions — once those solutions exist.

  But what would the correct statements be? We can't add an ISO 639-1 code if 
the language doesn't have one! :) All the ISO 639-1 codes which exist are (or 
should be) already in Wikidata - there's only ~200 and new ones are not being 
assigned any more. If we want to return anything other than `und` for the 
thousands of other potential languages, we would need to use something else 
like `P220` (ISO 639-3 code) or `P305` (IETF language tag).
  
  Using IETF language tags seems like the most useful solution to me. ISO 639-1 
is too limited. Only using ISO 639-3 would be awkward because those are always 
three-letter codes (e.g. `en` would turn into `eng`, `de` into `deu`). Falling 
back to ISO 639-3 if there's no ISO 639-1 code would be an improvement, but 
that's essentially how IETF language tags are assigned - English has the ISO 
639-1 code `en`, ISO 639-3 code `eng` and its IETF language tag is `en`, Scots 
only has the ISO 639-3 code `sco` and its IETF language tag is `sco`.
