  I tested this with a little script (P27549 
) and it looks like half of the 
servers I can reach consistently reply without `?item`:
  
good={'wdqs1005': 14, 'wdqs1013': 10, 'wdqs1007': 21}
bad={'wdqs1006': 23, 'wdqs1004': 18, 'wdqs1012': 14}
  
  (I recall that there are wdqs2xxx servers in codfw but due to the way geoip 
is setup they barely receive traffic; I don’t remember if there are other 
public wdqs1xxx servers in eqiad.)

TASK DESCRIPTION
  Queries like select * { ?item wdt:P31 ?value } limit 100 

 are suddenly sometimes not including `?item` in the results.
  
  The behaviour seems to be specific to certain servers. According to 
@Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, it's happening with results from wdqs1004 and 1012, 
whereas 1005, 1007 and 1013 are working fine.

  I looked into this more and found a breadcrumb here:

  That lead me to a year-old SO comment 

 from @Zbyszko, but aside from being so old it's using the wmflabs.org URL, the 
method doesn't quite work.  However, by looking at the request headers in the 
browser, I realized if you use Zbyszko's approach but send `"cookie": 
"wcqsSession="`, this works. So here is a working example:

  I realize my token is exposed publicly there, but since you can only use it 
for queries in the WCQS anyway, and it will expire in a bit, it seems fine.
  
  Some other questions I would like to see still in documentation:
  
  1. How to generate the wcqsSession token? Even if it's a different call to 
MWAPI, can I do it via API calls?
  2. If you must be logged in via browser because the user needs to click the 
"allow" button, can a URL be generated that can open the authorization popup on 
Commons in one click, or must the user load WCQS and then allow it to redirect 
them to the permission screen?
  3. What is the expected expiry period for the session token? I haven't seen 
it in a while in the browser, is it based on time since recent activity rather 
than a set amount?
  4. Is the wcqsSession token destroyed if a user logs out of their Wikimedia 
account?
  5. Since user is authenticated and can be tracked, are there rate limits or 
other controls? (Trying to determine if we built this into a public web app 
where many users could be querying WCQS concurrently form the same token, would 
they hit limits?)

  Patch should resolve the issue. In terms of testing I would estimate that 
only integration testing would reliably catch this type of problem. We have 
some of that in CirrusSearch itself but nothing I'm aware of for the 
specialized wikidata extension.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  **List of steps to reproduce** (step by step, including full links if 
applicable):
  
  - Go to https://m.wikidata.org/ (let’s say in a private window, to be sure)
  - Write something reasonable into the top search bar; let’s say //obama//.
  
  **What happens?**:
  Notice the results start with many less important items without an image 
(some Obama’s ancestor in Q96197836, fictional spy car in Q91269986, …), and, 
finally, //at the very end//, the 44th president of the United States (Q76).
  
  **What should have happened instead?**:
  Barrack Obama is an obvious candidate to be the first search result for the 
“obama” query; definitely it should not be the //last// result.
  
  
  
  The mobile search results on Wikidata are so obviously wrong I have sometimes 
sadly remarked it seems they are shown reversed. I did not know this was 
//literally true//! The client-side mobile frontend displays the results in a 
reversed order than what it has received from the search API! (It seems 
unbelievable nobody have reported that yet, but… I guess everyone is so used to 
less-then-stellar quality of search on Wikimedia projects… Dunno, but I could 
not find an existing report for this.)

  There is a variety of churn in Cirrus right now related to a version upgrade 
which likely caused this. Will look what is causing the breakage today.

  @dcausse I think y’all have been doing some work on elasticsearch 
compatibility in (Wikibase)CirrusSearch (T288765 
 and some other changes), any chance 
this could be related? I don’t see anything in the Wikibase.git log that looks 
like a likely culprit. (The issue can still be reproduced on Test Wikidata, 
e.g. search for a 
.)

believe it’s necessary to roll back commonswiki to wmf.9, because the relevant 
search requests already go to www.wikidata.org.

  Special:Search seems unaffected, but the **practical impact** of this is that 
manual editing of Wikidata becomes extremely tedious, or almost impossible.

  I already noticed this on testwikidata earlier today, when (I think) wmf.10 
was only on group0, but didn’t have time to follow up before wmf.10 moved ahead 
to group1 (which includes Wikidata).
  
  I suggest rolling back wikidatawiki, and only wikidatawiki, to wmf.9.

wbsearchentities API doesn’t seem to find any search results anymore, except 
for exact entity ID matches. (For example, searching Q42 

 finds Q42, i.e. Douglas Adams, but should also find Q42395533

  - Are lexical categories filtered against the search results in the same way 
that the spelling variants are filtered (i.e. there's a word starting with the

  **Potential plan of action:**
  
  1. Create a config for item IDs
  2. In the server side we can get their labels
  3. Get item IDs and labels to the client side (RL or otherwise)
  4. Once the list is in the client we can filter out this list against the 
results, prepend the results list with the boosted items and de-dupe the list.
  5. Add configuration for Beta Wikidata so that the task can be verified.
