  Regarding the option of using  a batch of queries to an external database; 
the issue is that what we are creating is a specialized index specifically for 
what we need. What we perform is a tree traversal were at each node a new 
decision is made.  To do something like this with a database, one would have to 
fire a series of queries where each of the queries is dependent on all the 
results of the previous ones.

  An update on the current status, mainly regarding the index file:
  
  First, I made a mistake in my response above. The size of the file is a lot 
smaller than what I wrote above. The binary version is currently around 75mb 
(and not 1.5gb).
  
  Progress:
  
  - We implemented serialization using protocol buffers. Initial experiments 
seem promising. Store and load times appear to be only slightly slower compared 
to the native format. The on-disk size grew from 75mb to 250mb. However, using 
compression (bzip2) the protocol buffer version can be queezed into 51mb, so 
that seems to go well.
  - While rewriting the serialization code, I noticed that it was hard to 
maintain that in a separate project. Hence, I integrated a minimal version of 
the index creation into the codebase.
  - The previous index creation was using the rdf dump as its datasource. The 
new version uses the json dump. That has several benefits, mainly with regards 
to needed preprocessing steps (or rather avoiding them).
  - The go version has been bumped from 1.17 to 1.18
  
  These changes are not merged into main yet.  Development is ongoing in 
https://github.com/martaannaj/RecommenderServer/tree/protobuffer_serialization 
  The following still needs to be done before merging.
  
  - test coverage for the new serialization format
  - checking whether gokart can be used with the latest go somehow. It does not 
support the new generics capabilities of go. Most functionality is covered by 
the other checking tools used.

  Can be verified on Beta.
  
  One thing I noticed is that the button becomes enabled again, with the 
original text, when the lexeme has been created and the browser is currently 
loading the new lexeme. Depending on how fast the wiki responds to the request 
for the new lexeme page (and perhaps also depending on the browser), the user 
may still see the form with the re-enabled button for a short while (I saw it 
for about one second on Beta). We might want to change this.

  You can save yourself the empty commit by //not// telling dependabot to

  I often add the same statement to many items by copying and pasting an entity 
ID instead of searching because it is faster. Having to select the entity every 
time when I already know what entity I'm trying to add is annoying.

  Is there a reason why it’s “the //lexeme’s// language field” but “the lemma 
field”, “the lexical category field”, “the spelling variant field”? To me that 
feels strange – perhaps we can remove “lexeme” from the language version as 
well.

  I think the best approach to implement this would be:
  
  1. try to edit the label, then the description (just like now); if that fails,
  2. try to edit the description, then the label (works better for some 
conflicts; if that fails,
  3. try to edit both at once, only as a last resort, because it makes for a 
less granular edit with (until T220696 
) a worse edit summary;
  4. only if all of them fail, show an error to the user
  
  But that might be tricky to implement.
