[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T362878: Add type-aware and namespace-aware versions of the message searchmenu-new-nocreate to Wikibase and WikibaseLexeme
Amire80 created this task. Amire80 added projects: MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseRepository, Wikidata Lexicographical data, Wikidata Analytics, I18n. TASK DESCRIPTION The message `searchmenu-new-nocreate` is empty and ignored in core, to let other sites customize it. On wikidata.org, it's customized <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Searchmenu-new-nocreate> in a way that shows specific strings depending on the namespace in which it's viewed, and transcludes translations made using locally translatable pages (using the Translate extension). It's a relatively good solution, because it allows all volunteer translators to contribute a complete localization. However, it has a couple of problems: 1. Other sites that use Wikibase and WikibaseLexeme don't enjoy this. They either have to customize something of their own or copy the wikidata.org solution. 2. These are essentially a part of the site's user interface, which are usually translated on translatewiki. Having to translate in several places is not so convenient, especially when there's no good reason to make the separation. It would be much better if the overriding messages for `searchmenu-new-nocreate` were in the Wikibase and WikibaseLexeme extensions, so that they could be translated in one place and all Wikibase users could enjoy them. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T360360: Add a "Multilingual sites" label to Wikibase
Amire80 created this task. Amire80 added projects: Wikibase (3rd party installations), MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseRepository, Wikidata, Language-Technical Support (Language-Technical Support (Current) ). Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION This is a follow-up to T102417 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T102417>. The original issue of that task is no longer relevant, but the last comments present another issue. The message `wikibase-sitelinks-special` is "Other sites" in English. People at that task seem to agree that "Multilingual sites" is a better label, at least for wikidata.org. And indeed, on wikidata.org, it was changed to "Multilingual sites" in English, British English, and Russian. However, other languages get the label from the software, and that's translated in translatewiki.net from "Other sites", so it creates an undesirable inconsistency between languages. A simplistic solution for this is to change `wikibase-sitelinks-special` to "Multilingual sites". This will be good for wikidata.org, but I'm not sure that it's good for other sites that use the Wikibase extension. So, what do other Wikibase users and developers think about this? Is it enough to just change this message? If that's the case, I can quickly do it myself. Or is something smarter needed? For example: 1. Create a new category called "Multilingual sites". 2. In the Wikimedia configuration, move all "Other sites" to it. 3. Let other sites remain with "Other sites" if they don't do anything. But that would probably have to be done by an actual Wikibase developer, because I'm not that familiar with that code. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T349440: add Wikidata language code osa
Amire80 created this task. Amire80 added a project: Wikidata. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION In T265297 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T265297>, only the code osa-latn was added. The code osa, for Osage in the Osage script should have been added, too, as I had already said on that task. It's definitely needed for monolingual values. I can immediately think of two items where text in this code would be useful: Q264400 (a person depicted on U.S. coins with name in the Osage script) and Q66316924 (a major motion picture with a lot of Osage dialogue and an official Osage title that appears in the Osage script in the promotional material and in the film itself). Very likely, there are many more items where values with text with this code will be relevant. It can probably be used for lexemes, too, although I don't intend to work on it myself. Since I'm a language committee member myself, I don't mind waiting for approval from another committee member. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T317193: Add language codes for Sepedi and isiNdebele
Amire80 added a comment. In T317193#8313914 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T317193#8313914>, @jhsoby wrote: > I am actually surprised that `nd` and `nr` aren't already in Names.php – I thought all ISO 639-1 codes (two-letter codes) were there, but that was apparently an incorrect assumption. No, not all two-letter codes are there. In practice, these two languages are among the very few that are still not there, and that's one of the reasons why I'd really love to have translators into them. > @Amire80 Would it be problematic to add them there even if they haven't completed the necessary localization? Yes, it's problematic, for two reasons: 1. Names.php is for languages in which there is some localization. 2. I don't have reliable information about the autonyms. In language-data (not Names.php) we already have the following: nd: [Latn, [AF], siNdebele saseNyakatho] nr: [Latn, [AF], isiNdebele seSewula] I added these two lines years ago based on the English Wikipedia. I wouldn't do it today because I'm not sure that they are correct: the English Wikipedia didn't have reliable sources for these autonyms then, and one of them (nd) changed to "isiNdebele saseNyakatho", and it still doesn't cite a source. So that's the problem with reliability, but they also have to be **distinct**. "Ndebele" by itself is //probably// written as "isiNdebele" in each of them, so another word is needed for both to distinguish them in a list of languages. A reliable source would be dictionaries or grammar books, for **each** language. (Also, the country name is sometimes added in parentheses, but I really dislike this solution. Country names change surprisingly often.) Not having autonyms is not a blocker for adding them to Wikidata, but if anyone seriously wants to add lexemes in these languages, then I'd also like to get reliable information about autonyms from that p person :) TASK DETAIL https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T317193 EMAIL PREFERENCES https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/ To: AGutman-WMF, Amire80 Cc: jhsoby, Amire80, Mahir256, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, AGutman-WMF, Keet10, mrephabricator, Astuthiodit_1, JKieserman, DMartin-WMF, karapayneWMDE, Invadibot, Aseleste, gengh, Nikolay_Komarov, GrounderUK, maantietaja, AndrewEells, ItamarWMDE, Nintendofan885, Akuckartz, Nandana, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, YULdigitalpreservation, LawExplorer, _jensen, rosalieper, Scott_WUaS, Nikki, Verdy_p, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331, ori ___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list -- wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe send an email to wikidata-bugs-le...@lists.wikimedia.org
[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T317193: Add language codes for Sepedi and isiNdebele
Amire80 added a comment. On Sepedi / Northern Sotho -- There's probably nothing to do about Sepedi. It can be added if you select "Northern Sotho". There's a debate about what the name of the language should be, and it's documented with pretty good references on the English Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Sotho_language . (Disclaimer: I added some of these references myself a few years ago. I hope it's clear from my edits that I don't have a strong opinion either way. From what I heard till now, there are good arguments for both names, and no clear "winner". But I'm not actually claiming to be an expert.) If anyone has good arguments for changing the English-language label of item https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q33890 or the title of the English Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Sotho_language from "Northern Sotho" to "Sepedi", this should be discussed on the respective talk pages in Wikidata and in the English Wikipedia. If anyone thinks that it should be possible to add lexemes separately in both Northern Sotho and in Sepedi, then "nso" should probably be used for Northern Sotho, and a code with a subtag for Sepedi. However, I suspect that this is not what's being asked here. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T313183: Split Wikibase message files to smaller groups
Amire80 created this task. Amire80 added projects: MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseRepository, Wikidata Lexicographical data, MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseClient, Wikidata, translatewiki.net, I18n. Restricted Application added a project: wdwb-tech. TASK DESCRIPTION By now, Wikibase extensions are an integral part of the Wikimedia world—certainly the Client and at least some parts of the Repo, and, increasingly, Lexeme. However, with the growth of the extensions, it acquired a lot of translatable messages. As of today, the count is: - Client: 169 - Lib: 141 - Repo: 494 - Cirrus Search: 22 - Lexeme: 128 - Quality Constraints: 139 - Entity Schema: 75 (not Wikibase, but related) That's a total of 1168 (not counting API and Lexeme Language Names). Even for a very experienced and dedicated volunteer translator, it will take at least several weeks to complete it. In practice, it takes months or even years in most languages. Of course, all of them should be eventually completely localized to all the languages, but it's better to do it in stages. For example, some new languages are coming in to the Wikimedia world, and I speak to most of the people who want to add them, and one of the things that repeatedly comes is that there is SO MUCH to translate at once, and it's hard to know where to begin. **My proposal is to split the messages in some Wikibase extensions to several parts.** The main parts will include, in total, up to 300 or so messages that are seen by most editors and readers doing common tasks, like reading and editing client pages, item and property pages, using watchlists, etc. The advanced parts will include things for power users and administrators, such as logs, technical error messages, federation, etc. In fact, something similar was done in several extensions already. For example, language names were separated from Wikibase Lexeme, Language variants messages were separated from main Visual Editor UI, and so on. And of course, the API messages in all the extensions were separated (T189982 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T189982>). None of it changed anything in the product or created any controversy. It is only intended to make localization on translatewiki more convenient by allowing the translators to work in smaller chunks and start from more common and user-visible messages. Some time ago, probably at Wikimania 2021, I discussed this with @Lydia_Pintscher and some other Wikidata developers and power-users. No one objected to the idea, but I never got around to doing it comprehensively. Now I'm finally writing it down and planning to do it. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T313181: Unnecessary escaping in a Wikibase Quality Constraints message on Special:SpecialPages
Amire80 created this task. Amire80 added projects: MediaWiki-Special-pages, I18n, Wikidata, Wikibase-Quality-Constraints. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. Restricted Application added a project: wdwb-tech. TASK DESCRIPTION **Steps to replicate the issue** (include links if applicable): - Go to the "Wikibase" section on Special:SpecialPages on wikidata.org, using the Hebrew user interface: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:SpecialPages?uselang=he#mw-specialpagesgroup-wikibase **What happens?**: - The first item in the list includes `"`. **What should have happened instead?**: - The first item in the list must not include `"`, and must look like "דו"ח אילוצים". **Other information** (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.): The source message is wbqc-constraintreport/he <https://translatewiki.net/wiki/MediaWiki:Wbqc-constraintreport/he>. It includes a usual double quotation mark, `"`, and the full message is דו"ח אילוצים. This is a correct translation: in Hebrew, double quotation marks are often used in the middle of the word. It looks like this quotation mark is escaped. This is unnecessary. On the same page, a link to Special:ChangeEmail appears. This Hebrew message (changeemail <https://translatewiki.net/wiki/MediaWiki:Changeemail/he>) also includes the double quotation mark in the word דוא"ל, and it's displayed correctly. So, strangely enough, it looks like this bug is unique to #wikibase-quality-constraints <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/wikibase-quality-constraints/>. I tried reproducing it on my local wiki. I didn't install Wikibase (it's complicated...), and simply tried adding the quotation marks to the title of other special pages from core MediaWiki and other extensions. They were displayed correctly. So perhaps there's some extra security setting on wikidata.org or in this particular extension, which forces escaping where it's not supposed to be necessary, but I might be wrong. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T312836: Namespaces for Wikidata are not conveniently translatable
Amire80 created this task. Amire80 added projects: MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseRepository, Wikidata Lexicographical data, Shape Expressions, Wikidata, I18n. Restricted Application added a project: wdwb-tech. TASK DESCRIPTION There are several special namespaces in Wikidata, and none of them is conveniently translatable. What's worse, each of them is hard to translate for different reasons. Item and Property = In English, the namespace tab in the main space is shown as "Item". That's because nstab-main was manually set to "Item" in the MediaWiki space. This isn't good. In most other languages, the tab is called "Page", the default translation of nstab-main. In a few languages, it was translated by administrators <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:PrefixIndex?prefix=nstab-main&namespace=8>, but it's not the right way to do it. All the same is true for the Property space. Both namespaces and their associated talk spaces can be translated in repo/Wikibase.i18n.namespaces.php. They are translated there to Hebrew, for example, and the names could be used as tab titles, but they aren't. Perhaps it would be better to make it translatable in translatewiki, because translating this file requires using Git, which most translators are not going to do. But at least using the file would be better than translating in the MediaWiki on Wikidata.org. EntitySchema This extension doesn't even have an .i18n.namespaces file. The tab title is translated to some languages locally <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:PrefixIndex?prefix=nstab-entity&namespace=8>, but it's bad. The names for the EntitySchema and EntitySchema talk spaces appear to be defined in extension.json, only in English. Adding a EntitySchema.i18n.namespaces.php file, and //actually using// the translations there or making nstab-entityschema and nstab-entityschema_talk would be great. Lexeme == The Lexeme namespace name appears to be hard-coded in src/WikibaseLexemeHooks.php, and not easily translatable in a PHP file or in translatewiki. The tab title is translated to some languages locally <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:PrefixIndex?prefix=nstab-lex&namespace=8>, but it's bad. A solution similar to what is suggested for EntitySchema would be good. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T274687: Links is not localizable in Wikidata sidebar
Amire80 added a comment. We've discussed it a bit on Telegram. For now, I'll add them to the Wikidata.org extension to make them conveniently localizable into all languages. However, they can be useful to other Wikibase sites, so it makes sense to put them in a more reusable place some day, for example the Wikibase Lexeme or Wikibase Repo extensions. Sidebar localization is tricky, and sidebars are heavily customized on almost every site. Finding a good way to do it can take some time, so let's put them //somewhere// now. I'll try to give them key names that are easily reusable so that it will be easy to move them to other extensions if other developers figure out how to do it well. Amire80 added a comment. Restricted Application added a project: wdwb-tech. For Hebrew user interface, I've changed the message Widthheight to include . I that message supports HTML. Ironically, it won't fix the problem for user interface in LTR languages. That's because the has `dir="auto"`. It's not a very good idea to use `dir="auto"` in general, and especially not on such a large element. If `dir="auto"` is used just for the chance that the filename is in an RTL language, it probably shouldn't be used at all. What I'm saying is that it's not relevant to the usual kind of thing that Langcom is doing. Precisely because of this, it's the product developers and designers that should review this and not Langcom. By any account, this is not a request for a //language//, but for a special case. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T285156: Add termbox language code mul
Amire80 added a comment. My skepticism about this proposal is related not so much to my Language Committee membership, but my general understanding of how MediaWiki and Wikidata work. I really think that it should be solved by a dedicated and properly designed Wikibase or Wikidata //feature// and not by using a language code in a new way. Wikidata and Wikibase are built around the notion that some kinds of values can exist in different languages, and this proposal is trying to turn this notion on its head, and this may backfire. Copying the same thing to most/all languages creates massive amounts of edits and is a huge waste of resources, but we don't have a language-neutral place we can add them instead. We would have to use English. So, `mul` is kind of the right code for that in general, but it's still a special case, and I'm wondering whether it's right to use it as //usual// aliases and labels. Can't it be a kind of an extra field in the data model, or a property, like "multilingual name" or "universal name"? Using just a language code for this sounds like a bit of a hack that can backfire. > Examples: > > - Unicode character "♣" <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q87526860> - has "♣" as the label and "U+2663" as an alias 446 times > - Switzerland <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q39> - has "CH" as an alias 403 times > - carbon <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q623> - has "C" as an alias 187 times > - the disambiguation page "C" <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q28006> - has "C" as the label 104 times > - the Danish men's national road cycling team 2021 <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q104248887> - has "DEN 2021" as an alias 411 times > - the galaxy "SDSS J151017.36+160605.3" <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q74758893> - has "SDSS J151017.36+160605.3" as the label 411 times > - the species "Neotrogla curvata" <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q39898268> - has "Neotrogla curvata" as the label 411 times TASK DETAIL https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T285156 EMAIL PREFERENCES https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/ To: Amire80 Cc: Nikki, Esc3300, Mbch331, jhsoby, Amire80, Lydia_Pintscher, ChristianKl, Mahir256, Aklapper, Invadibot, maantietaja, Akuckartz, Dinadineke, DannyS712, Nandana, tabish.shaikh91, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, Jayprakash12345, JakeTheDeveloper, QZanden, merbst, LawExplorer, _jensen, rosalieper, Scott_WUaS, Wikidata-bugs, aude, TheDJ ___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list -- wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe send an email to wikidata-bugs-le...@lists.wikimedia.org

I think the situation has much improved lately (also thanks to you), but during my recent cleanup I still came across countless requests by contributors that were lost in phabricator without a clear reason. They are not countless. Phabricator has a finite number of tasks. It certainly happens that things get missed, and it's not good. I do Language committee work it as a volunteer. I also have a day job and two children. I receive a lot of Phabricator emails, which are very similar to each other, and it happens that I miss some. It doesn't create a good impression. It comes back to the questions of what are the basic criteria of Language committee fulfilled. If these aren't defined, deadlines cannot be defined either. The whole point of the Language committee is to prevent hoaxes, invalid languages, and duplicates.
