[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Edited] T162331: Provide tools for processing obfuscated Chinese geodata (GCJ-02, BD-09)

2018-10-13 Thread Arthur2e5
Arthur2e5 updated the task description. (Show Details)
CHANGES TO TASK DESCRIPTION...The "Chinese" part mentioned above can be done simply with Google's Geocoding API's `region` output. It excludes MO, HK, TW, disputed territory which Google didn't buy data from Chinese sources for, and most of South China Sea islands. For a local solution, use OSM's Chinese border for land and 12nm border (without S. China Sea) for sea.

For now at least GCJ-02 data can be justified since stuff like Geolocator and Coordinates use Google Maps. Baidu also has some click-to-see-coord feature, so I guess BD-09 data, although definitely limited to one proprietrary source that everyone uses, may be justfied as well.

I am still against seriously storing GCJ-02 data. The entire thing is created for obscurity from WGS-84.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T162331EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Arthur2e5Cc: Esc3300, Nikki, PokestarFan, Pnorman, C933103, Aklapper, Arthur2e5, Cosine02, Liuxinyu970226, Lahi, Gq86, Looniverse, GoranSMilovanovic, RazeSoldier, QZanden, EBjune, Orienteerix, LawExplorer, debt, JGirault, Taiwania_Justo, phabyogi, Susannaanas, lxbarth, Fuzheado, Zache, Planemad, Cwek, Wikidata-bugs, aude, zhuyifei1999, Shizhao, Yurik, MaxSem, Mbch331, Jay8g___

I doubt that proposal's usefulness in our case, as WGS84-like (including ITRS) lat-lon is fairly ubiquitous on our planet. Adding a property for solving Earth problems also means complicating things like Template:Coord, which is something I don't want to do for "systems" created out of bad faith and riddled with errors (look at GCJ-02's ellipsoid and its supposed data source).TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T162331EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Arthur2e5Cc: Nikki, PokestarFan, Pnorman, C933103, Aklapper, Arthur2e5, Cosine02, Liuxinyu970226, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, Orienteerix, debt, JGirault, phabyogi, Susannaanas, Izno, lxbarth, Fuzheado, Planemad, Cwek, Wikidata-bugs, aude, zhuyifei1999, Shizhao, Yurik, MaxSem, Mbch331, Jay8g___

A bit of addition to that "AGF hat" part. It turns out that these twisted variations of WGS-84 do see widespread use out of map vendors' maps, and that's not limited to the gov's mandatory GCJ-02. Ningbo Government's database for historial and cultural sites, for example, uses Baidu's BD-09 (twisted GCJ-02) system so its internal APIs could use Baidu's maps smoothly.

These systems are like Newspeak, but are much more pervasive in terms of usage. Thanks to GCJ-02's early implementation, the common prole doesn't even know what WGS-84 looks like in China.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T162331EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Arthur2e5Cc: PokestarFan, Pnorman, C933103, Aklapper, Arthur2e5, Cosine02, Liuxinyu970226, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, Orienteerix, debt, JGirault, phabyogi, Susannaanas, Izno, lxbarth, Fuzheado, Planemad, Cwek, Wikidata-bugs, aude, zhuyifei1999, Shizhao, Yurik, MaxSem, Mbch331, Jay8g___

Good question. With my AGF hat on, I would say that maps served in mainland China, Google or Baidu, also provide distorted/shift aerial imagery to mask the deviation applied, so "good guys" who look for places on the wrong aerial map are still screwed. With that map off by a bit, I should mention thatTASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T162331EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Arthur2e5Cc: Pnorman, C933103, Aklapper, Arthur2e5, Cosine02, Liuxinyu970226, QZanden, Salgo60, D3r1ck01, Izno, Cwek, Wikidata-bugs, aude, zhuyifei1999, Shizhao, MaxSem, Mbch331___

For people looking for a solution for now, I have set up a simple user gadget for conversion (web version). I have added links to the web version to the CN section for GeoTemplate on zhwiki and enwiki. I am planning on adding the said map previews to the web demo, but that might take a few weeks of procrastination.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T162331EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Arthur2e5Cc: C933103, Aklapper, Arthur2e5, Cosine02, Liuxinyu970226, QZanden, Salgo60, D3r1ck01, Izno, Cwek, Wikidata-bugs, aude, zhuyifei1999, Shizhao, MaxSem, Mbch331___

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T127950: [Story] Support celestial coordinates

Arthur2e5 added a comment.
Regarding precision, I think Wikidata is already doing some such recording for Earth geographic coordinates. That should be applicable to celestial coordinates.

Maybe this can also help users from Mainland China a lot, as their map service sites are generally using GCJ-02/BD-09 rather than WGS-84

No matter how much GCJ-02 and BD-09 obfuscates on WGS84, they still refer to the Earth, not the Heavens. We do refer to scribbled unrecognizable stuff as "heavenly text" (天书) in Chinese though. I mean, if anything were to be done for these things, these obfuscated stuff should become temporary (say, normalized immediately after submission by bot) for input and auto-generated for output. They hold little value as internal representations.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T127950EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Arthur2e5Cc: Lydia_Pintscher, bzimport, Mike_Peel, C933103, Arthur2e5, Liuxinyu970226, ArthurPSmith, Ricordisamoa, Jc3s5h, Swpb, Nikki, Aklapper, Micru, StudiesWorld, QZanden, Salgo60, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T148115: Allow alternative site ids (interwiki) in mw.wikibase.{label, sitelink} Lua API

2016-10-13 Thread Arthur2e5
Arthur2e5 created this task.Arthur2e5 added a project: MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseClient.Herald added subscribers: Cosine02, Aklapper.Herald added a project: Wikidata.
TASK DESCRIPTION[[Module:Infobox gene]] in enwiki generates an infobox by pulling data directly from Wikidata. However, editors porting this module to zhwiki can't find a proper way of falling back to enwiki articles for missing links (and yes, the labels are often missing as well). A dirty way that I have personally come up with is to fetch the whole entity and then use entity methods, but apparently this is expensive per the docs.

An additional optional argument to these two language-dependent methods which defaults to the current language/site (thus maintaining current behavior) will be useful for such cases.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T148115EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Arthur2e5Cc: Aklapper, Cosine02, Arthur2e5, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___
