We are currently trying to determine for each option what it actually means in terms of how much breathing room it buys us, how many people would be affected, etc. That's one of the tasks for this. We hopefully have the larger overview for discussion soon. Is there a public version of that overview of the different options? Daniel_Mietchen created this task. Daniel_Mietchen added projects: Wikidata, Tools. TASK DESCRIPTION Here is an example <https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q37038412=revision=1022353600=911550935=source> where the same QuickStatements batch <https://tools.wmflabs.org/quickstatements/#/batch/19317> has added the same statement multiple times. I have seen similar behaviour occasionally before but that had only involved duplicates, and I dealt with them as part of normal duplicate cleanups and did not dig any further. This example, however, indicates that there is a need to dig a bit deeper, hence this ticket. The QuickStatements formatting came from the Author Disambiguator, but I suspect the issue is on the QuickStatements end. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T212780: Fix inconsistent behaviour of curly brackets, comments and whitespace in WDQS
Daniel_Mietchen created this task.Daniel_Mietchen added a project: Wikidata-Query-Service.Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.Restricted Application added a project: Wikidata. TASK DESCRIPTIONSomewhen around the holiday period, a change to the WDQS seems to have altered the behaviour of some key elements of queries, notably curly brackets and comments. Since this affects loads of example and maintenance queries, I suppose a bug for that has been filed already but I could not find any, so here is a brief description of the problem: One of my maintenance queries checks for publications that have the word "Zika" in the title but have not been tagged with P921 (main subject) Q202864 (Zika virus). Here it is: SELECT DISTINCT ?item ?title WHERE { hint:Query hint:optimizer "None". SERVICE wikibase:mwapi { bd:serviceParam wikibase:api "Search"; wikibase:endpoint "www.wikidata.org"; mwapi:srsearch "zika haswbstatement:P31=Q13442814". ?page_title wikibase:apiOutput mwapi:title. } BIND(IRI(CONCAT(STR(wd:), ?page_title)) AS ?item) FILTER NOT EXISTS { ?item wdt:P921 wd:Q202864. } FILTER ( ?item != wd:Q22330904 ) # actually about Spondweni virus, as per Q28733424 FILTER ( ?item != wd:Q22330879 ) # Zika b. Marković, M.D. (19 September 1889--3 September 1970) # Also check for items falsely tagged with the family name Zika (Q56245778) ?item wdt:P31 wd:Q13442814; wdt:P1476 ?title. FILTER CONTAINS(LCASE(?title), "zika"). } # LIMIT 1 It is expected to return 0 results when things are up to date, but when I am commenting out the FILTER NOT EXISTS line, I am now still getting 0 results, so I played around a bit more and noticed that things go back to normal (i.e. currently 4237 results) when I encapsulate the SERVICE block in curly brackets. However, this breaks (i.e. returns 0 results again) when I am then commenting out the ?title variable. Here, things can be brought back to normal by adding an empty line before the curly brackets around the SERVICE block. Of note, I had to add the ?title part to the query in response to a similar change in the WDQS some months back which resulted in the mwapi:srsearch command not just returning pages where the string "zika" was in the title but also pages where it occurred anywhere on the page, e.g. in the name of an author or in the title of a cited publication. I would welcome some feature in the WDQS that would announce, highlight and explain such changes from somewhere near the UI.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T212780EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Daniel_MietchenCc: Smalyshev, Daniel_Mietchen, Aklapper, Nandana, Lahi, Gq86, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, merbst, LawExplorer, _jensen, D3r1ck01, Jonas, Xmlizer, jkroll, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Tobias1984, Manybubbles, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Updated] T175448: Provide mechanism(s) to avoid WDQS timeouts for certain pre-approved queries
Daniel_Mietchen added a comment. Here's a suggestion in terms of mechanisms to avoid malicious re-runs. I'm not sure how practical it is, but perhaps it helps us move forward A dedicated mechanism (could be an on-wiki user group flag or an off-wiki page) keeps a list of pre-approved accounts that have the right to trigger pre-approved emergency queries to be run The actual triggering would be done by edits to an on-wiki page: a dedicated bot would listen to that page, check that the requesting account has pre-approved status, check whether the query has already been run within a pre-defined time interval if not: run the query once in that pre-defined time interval if yes: point to the relevant results page if the query still needs to be re-run before the time interval is over, then the query would have to be resubmitted by another pre-approved user, with some way to indicate that this is a conscious re-run post the query results on some static page and in a way (e.g. as JSON or CSV) that allows them to be harvested by other tools This mechanism does not exclude all possibilities of erroneous runs, but would probably limit them significantly, especially if it were complemented by a query canceling mechanism as discussed in T136479.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T175448EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Daniel_MietchenCc: Smalyshev, matej_suchanek, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, Jonas, Daniel_Mietchen, Aklapper, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, merbst, Avner, debt, Gehel, FloNight, Xmlizer, Izno, jkroll, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Tobias1984, Manybubbles, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs
[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T175448: Provide mechanism(s) to avoid WDQS timeouts for certain pre-approved queries
Daniel_Mietchen created this task.Daniel_Mietchen added a project: Wikidata-Query-Service.Herald added a subscriber: Aklapper.Herald added projects: Wikidata, Discovery. TASK DESCRIPTIONWe are exploring the use of Wikidata queries in disaster response, e.g. to get things like total population in the area, number and location of key infrastructure (e.g. hospitals or bridges) or monuments etc. None of the queries we have so far is ripe for prime time yet (we're testing them on current disasters like the Mexico earthquake) but some of them will likely get there soon. In this context, it would be necessary to have mechanisms that would ensure such queries actually do run through when a relevant disaster strikes in the future, so that the relevant information can be provided and/ or improved as necessary. In other words, we would have to have a way (or possibly even several, since one emergency system may not be enough) to exempt such queries from the timeout, but in order to avoid ineffective uses of our query resources, we would probably have to limit this exemption to certain pre-approved queries (and come up with a mechanism for approval, but that is probably another discussion). Such a feature may be useful well beyond disaster contexts. A good number of queries - including some of the official examples - also time out, which is annoying to newbies or when you are demoing Wikidata. But I think it makes sense to discuss such exemptions first for disaster contexts, and once we have things going well there, we can see whether and how to extend it.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T175448EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Daniel_MietchenCc: matej_suchanek, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, Jonas, Daniel_Mietchen, Aklapper, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, merbst, Avner, debt, Gehel, FloNight, Xmlizer, Izno, jkroll, Smalyshev, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Tobias1984, Manybubbles, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

I think a Stop or Cancel button would be nice - sometimes, I know shortly after pressing the Run/ Play button that the query is not precisely what I wanted (e.g. because I changed something in one place, but should have done it in two places), and then I have to wait until it finishes or times out.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T170279EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Daniel_MietchenCc: Daniel_Mietchen, Fadirra, Pigsonthewing, Astinson, Lea_Lacroix_WMDE, Jonas, Aklapper, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, merbst, Avner, debt, Gehel, FloNight, Xmlizer, Izno, jkroll, Smalyshev, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Tobias1984, Manybubbles, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T142082: Add another "Add statement" button on top to ensure consistent position
Daniel_Mietchen added a comment. I agree that the current "add" buttons at the bottom are hard to find on large pages, and I have seen this put off newbies. Replacing them with one predictably located bottom on the top sounds like progress to me. Checking for existing statements with essentially the same information can be quite daunting already for human users (example: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q13561329#P682 ) and should perhaps rather be done automatically before saving - we already have similar mechanisms in place to check whether two items share the same label and description in the given language.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T142082EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Daniel_MietchenCc: Daniel_Mietchen, Nikki, TerraCodes, Esc3300, Jonas, thiemowmde, Lydia_Pintscher, Nemo_bis, Aklapper, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

TASK DESCRIPTIONWhen I'm typing in the WQS query form, help is provided in terms of variable names and such, but if I'm typing a SPARQL command like "SHA512", "group_concat", "FILTER" or "BIND" or even just an asterisk, no help is available as to how this command can or should be used (nor can I search for example queries using that command - see T154768). It would be very useful to have some sort of help structure that makes users aware of SPARQL syntax, including parentheses, curly brackets and things like ";.:!*/+" or Wikidata specifics like "wdt:", "p:", "pq", "psv", "wdno" etc. This help could become available either as characters are being typed in or by clicking on/ hovering over characters that are already there (e.g. in an example query) or statically from a list of supported commands/ operators/ namespaces etc. that are generally available for such a query (similar to the special characters list in edit mode on many wikis), though this could perhaps be limited to things not yet used in a given query if help for the used ones is already there as per the two bullets above. . TASK DESCRIPTIONI just went through https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T123529 and think its focus on URLs as a way to provide hashtag functionality is one way that could be useful for supporting campaigns involving Wikidata, where most manual edits do not currently have hashtag functionality (thus precluding campaigns like 1Lib1Ref on Wikidata), and tool-based Wikidata edits are tagged by tool only. A range of other ways could be thought of: A dedicated set of tools (e.g. as used in https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Menu_Challenge/participants ) but more easily deployable by others Some abstraction of verbal descriptions as in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Computational_Biology/ISCB_competition_announcement_2016 Something tied to a specific set of items/ properties/ references/ constraints Something tied to hashtags in other ways, e.g. as per https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Education_Program your idea here https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Menu_Challenge/participants or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Computational_Biology/ISCB_competition_announcement_2016TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T144757EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Daniel_MietchenCc: Aklapper, Daniel_Mietchen, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs
