[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T187424: Support queued SPARQL request
Ijon added a comment. I think postponing //any// solution to after we have a scaling strategy comes down too strongly against user needs. A number of trusted users -- including yours truly -- occasionally need to run queries that would go 20%-50% over the current timeout, and have no reasonable way of doing it. I understand T179879 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T179879> is a significant feature to develop, but some interim measures could be taken, //while// the scaling strategy is devised. Measures such as: 1. increase the timeout to 120 seconds. 2. provide an additional SPARQL endpoint with older data (say, updated only once every 48 hours) and a higher timeout, as these longer queries typically don't need up-to-the-minute replication. These seem to me to be relatively simple to implement, while a longer-term solution is provided, and would unblock some meaningful work in the meantime. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T236593: Cannot enter multiple forms for the same language variant
Ijon added a comment. Not quite, though it could accommodate the Hebrew case. For the record, in Hebrew spelling is quite standardized, but there are **two different orthographies** -- one with diacritics (making //matres lectionis// unnecessary) and one without (having more //matres lectionis// to convey vowel information in the absence of diacritics). In modern usage, //only// poetry and the Bible are written in the orthography with diacritics, whereas everything else (prose books, newspapers, scientific articles) are written in the orthography without diacritics. A couple of quick examples: the following words are all spelled with the exact same three letters, but the different diacritics combinations give distinctly different meanings: סֵפֶר (a book) סְפַר (a frontier/wilderness) סַפָּר (a hairdresser) סִפֵּר (he narrated) סֻפָּר (it was narrated) In the orthography without diacritics, these five would be rendered, in order: ספר ספר ספר סיפר סופר Note that the first three are //indistinguishable// in the non-diacriticized orthography, and can only be interpreted in context. Ideally, one would be able to give the base and inflected forms of each lexeme twice -- once with diacritics, and once without. Ijon added a comment. Experience suggests that stabilizing the Magnus tools would be a likelier path than getting WMF to allocate feature development resources. AFAIK Ops has been working with Magnus to stabilize the VM for PetScan, which has become a core, day-to-day working tool for many volunteers across many communities. Similar investment could be made in Tabernacle, which is excellent. Your point about wanting to not depend on SPARQL-queries can be addressed fairly easily by adding a drop-down with useful pre-set queries for novices to use when wanting to translate useful labels in Tabernacle.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T212323EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: IjonCc: Ijon, Amire80, Aklapper, Nandana, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, Jayprakash12345, QZanden, LawExplorer, _jensen, Soum213, D3r1ck01, Srdjan_m, MuhammadShuaib, LNDDYL, Psychoslave, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Gryllida, Shizhao, Nikerabbit, Arrbee, santhosh, KartikMistry, Mbch331, Jay8g___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

Ijon created this task.Ijon added a project: Wikidata-Query-Service.Herald added a subscriber: Aklapper.Herald added projects: Wikidata, Discovery. TASK DESCRIPTIONCurrently, WDQS's timeout prevents many legitimate queries involving large datasets (e.g. various counting queries tied to large wikis, see example at bottom). The performance and attack issues are understood. This ticket requests that in addition to the anonymous public service, there would be an OAuth-dependent service for logged in users, that would permit users with a "trusted query runner" bit (see below) to run queries with a significantly longer -- perhaps 5 minutes? -- timeout. The bit could be defined and managed by the Wikidata community. That community could either come up with criteria for giving out the bit, or just empower Wikidata admins to give out the bit at their discretion. Obviously, Ops and Search must retain responsibility for the cluster's health, so would be empowered to remove the "trusted query runner" bit if a user is seen to be abusing or attacking the servers. Example query that times out on larger wikis: http://tinyurl.com/y973aawx I can run this query -- which really impresses people, like an instant x-ray of a Wikipedia's coverage of people -- for smaller languages, but not for, say, nl, de, fr, zh, ru, en.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T179879EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: IjonCc: Ijon, Aklapper, Lahi, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, merbst, Avner, debt, Gehel, Jonas, FloNight, Xmlizer, jkroll, Smalyshev, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Tobias1984, Manybubbles, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

There are advantages of culture and language that local groups and orgs often have over WMF.
